1 There was a certain man from Ramah of Zophim, on Mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.
2 And he had two wives: the name of one was Hannah, and the name of the second was Peninnah. And Peninnah had sons. But Hannah did not have children.
3 And this man went up from his city, on the established days, so that he might adore and sacrifice to the Lord of hosts at Shiloh. Now the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, priests of the Lord, were in that place.

5 But to Hannah he gave one portion with sorrow. For he loved Hannah, but the Lord had closed her womb.
6 And her rival afflicted her and vehemently distressed her, to a great extent, for she rebuked her that the Lord had closed her womb.
7 And she did so every year, when the time returned for them to ascend to the temple of the Lord. And she provoked her in this way. And so, she wept and did not take food.
8 Therefore, her husband Elkanah said to her: 'Hannah, why are you weeping? And why do you not eat? And for what reason do you afflict your heart? Am I not better to you than ten sons?'

℟ God is the hearer of all: he himself sent his Angel, and took me from among the sheep of my father:

11 And she made a vow, saying, 'O Lord of hosts, if, in looking with favor, you will see the affliction of your servant and will remember me, and will not forget your handmaid, and if you will give to your servant a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall pass over his head.'

Angela Merici, born of devout parents at Desenzano, a town of the diocese of Verona on Lake Garda in the Venetian dominion, from her earliest age she diligently guarded the lily of virginity which she had resolved to preserve perpetually. Shrinking from all feminine adornment, she studiously disfigured her fine features and beautiful hair, that she might please only the heavenly Spouse of souls. Bereft of her parents in the very flower of adolescence, she attempted from desire for a stricter life to flee to a desert place; but, prevented by her uncle, she knew how to achieve at home what was not permitted in solitude. She frequently wore a hairshirt and used the discipline, eating meat only when ill and wine only at the feasts of the Lord's Nativity and Resurrection; and for many days she tasted nothing at all. Devoted to prayer, she took the briefest sleep on the ground. She recognized at once a demon attempting to delude her under the appearance of a shining angel, and put him to flight. At last, having renounced her paternal goods and having embraced the habit and rule of the Third Order of Saint Francis, she joined evangelical poverty to the praise of virginity.

Returning therefore to Brescia, where she had taken a house near the temple of holy Afra, she established there a new society of virgins, as she had been commanded by a heavenly voice and vision, under a fixed discipline and holy rules of life, and adorned it with the patronage and name of holy Ursula, the unconquered leader of virgins; and, as she lay near death, she foretold that it would endure for ever. What Catholic does not know that the Father is truly Father, the Son is truly Son, and the Holy Spirit is truly Holy Spirit? As the Lord himself says to his Apostles: Going, baptize all nations in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. This is the perfect Trinity subsisting in unity, which we profess to be of one substance. For we do not, after the manner of bodies, make division in God; but according to the power of the divine nature, which is not in matter, we both believe that the persons of the names truly subsist and testify that the unity of the divinity is one.

We do not say that the Son of God is an extension of one part from another part, as some have supposed; nor do we take the Word as something without substance, like the sound of a voice: but we believe that the three Names and three Persons are of one essence, one majesty, and one power. And therefore we confess one God: because the unity of majesty forbids that those who are many be called gods. In the end we name Father and Son in Catholic usage; but to speak of two Gods we neither can nor ought. Not that the Son of God is not God — he is indeed true God from true God — but because we know the Son of God from no other than from that one Father himself, therefore we say one God.
