The Fourth Day before the Nones of June

At Rome, the birthday of the holy Martyrs Marcellinus the Presbyter and Peter the Exorcist, who, under Diocletian, having instructed many in the faith while in prison, were on that account, after grievous bonds and very many tortures, beheaded by the judge Serenus in a place that was called the Dark Wood; which thereafter, in honor of the Saints, was changed in name and called the White Wood. Their bodies were buried in a crypt near Saint Tiburtius; and their tomb was afterward adorned with verses by Pope Saint Damasus.

In Campania, Saint Erasmus, Bishop and Martyr. He, under the Emperor Diocletian, first beaten with lead-weighted whips, then gravely scourged with rods, afterward drenched with resin, sulphur, lead, pitch, wax, and oil, appeared unharmed; then at Formiae, under Maximian, tortured again with diverse and most terrible punishments, yet preserved by God to confirm the others; at last, called by the Lord, glorious in martyrdom, he rested with a holy end. His body was afterward translated to Gaeta.

At Lyons in Gaul, the holy Martyrs Pothinus the Bishop, Sanctus the Deacon, Vetius, Epagathus, Maturus, Ponticus, Biblis, Attalus, Alexander, and Blandina, together with many others; whose courageous and repeated struggles during the time of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus and Lucius Verus are recounted in the letter of the Church of Lyons written to the Churches of Asia and Phrygia. Among these, Saint Blandina, weaker in sex, feebler in body, lower in condition, enduring more prolonged and more bitter contests, and remaining still strong, was slain with the sword and followed the others whom she had exhorted to the palm.

On the island of Proconnesus in the Propontis, Saint Nicephorus, Bishop of Constantinople, the most ardent defender of ancestral traditions, who steadfastly opposed Leo the Armenian, the Iconoclast Emperor, on behalf of the veneration of the holy Images; and, punished by him with exile, after having endured a long martyrdom there for fourteen years, passed to the Lord.
