1 Misit Heródes rex manus ut afflígeret quosdam de Ecclésia.
2 Occídit autem Iacóbum, fratrem Ioánnis, gládio.
3 Videns autem quia placéret Iudǽis, appósuit ut apprehénderet et Petrum. Erant autem dies azymórum.
4 Quem, cum apprehendísset, misit in cárcerem, tradens quátuor quaterniónibus mílitum custodiéndum, volens post Pascha prodúcere eum pópulo.
5 Et Petrus quidem servabátur in cárcere; orátio autem fiébat sine intermissióne ab Ecclésia ad Deum pro eo.

1 Now at the same time, king Herod extended his hand, in order to afflict some from the Church.
2 Then he killed James, the brother of John, with the sword.
3 And seeing that it pleased the Jews, he set out next to apprehend Peter also. Now it was the days of Unleavened Bread.
4 So when he had apprehended him, he sent him into prison, handing him over into the custody of four groups of four soldiers, intending to produce him to the people after the Passover.
5 And so Peter was detained in prison. But prayers were being made without ceasing, by the Church, to God on his behalf.

7 Et ecce Angelus Dómini ástitit, et lumen refúlsit in habitáculo, percussóque látere Petri, excitávit eum, dicens: Surge velóciter. Et cecidérunt caténæ de mánibus eius.
8 Dixit autem Angelus ad eum: Præcíngere, et cálcea te cáligas tuas. Et fecit sic. Et dixit illi: Circúmda tibi vestiméntum tuum, et séquere me.

6 And when Herod was ready to produce him, in that same night, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, and was bound with two chains. And the guards before the door were keeping watch over the prison.
7 And behold, an Angel of the Lord stood near, and a light shined forth in the cell. And tapping Peter on the side, he awakened him, saying, 'Rise up, quickly.' And the chains fell from his hands.
8 Then the Angel said to him: 'Dress yourself, and put on your boots.' And he did so. And he said to him, 'Wrap your garment around yourself and follow me.'

11 Et Petrus ad se revérsus, dixit: Nunc scio vere quia misit Dóminus Angelum suum, et erípuit me de manu Heródis et de omni exspectatióne plebis Iudæórum.

9 And going out, he followed him. And he did not know this truth: that this was being done by an Angel. For he thought he was seeing a vision.
10 And passing by the first and second guards, they came to the iron gate which leads into the city; and it opened for them by itself. And going out, they passed through one street, and immediately the Angel withdrew from him.
11 And Peter, returning to himself, said: 'Now I know, truly, that the Lord sent his Angel, and that he rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.'

Under the rule of the younger Theodosius, when Eudocia his wife had come to Jerusalem to fulfill a vow, she was there favored with many gifts. Pre-eminent among them was the remarkable gift of an iron chain, adorned with gold and gems, which they asserted to be the very one with which the Apostle Peter had been bound by Herod. Eudocia, having venerated the chain with piety, afterwards sent it to Rome to her daughter Eudoxia, who brought it to the Supreme Pontiff. He in turn showed her another chain with which the same Apostle had been bound under the Emperor Nero.

Peter alone among the Apostles merited to hear: Amen I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church — worthy indeed to be a stone for the foundation, a column for the support, a key for the Kingdom, in building the peoples in the house of God. If the shadow of one who came to visit was so healing, how much more the chain of one who bound? If an empty appearance of a hollow image was able to have in it the power of salvation, how much more did the fetters, pressed by their iron weight upon the sacred limbs, draw forth healing from the body? If before martyrdom he was so powerful in aid of those who prayed, how much more efficacious is he after his triumph? Blessed those bonds, which, changed from manacles and fetters into a crown, and touching the Apostle, made him a Martyr! Blessed the chains, which sent their prisoner all the way to the Cross of Christ, destined not so much to condemn as to consecrate him!
