77:20 He struck the rock, and so waters flowed, and the torrents flooded: * but would even he be able to provide bread,

77:21 Therefore, the Lord heard, and he was dismayed: * and a fire was kindled within Jacob, and an anger ascended into Israel.
77:22 For they neither put their trust in God: * nor did they hope in his salvation:
77:23 And he commanded the clouds from above: * and he opened the doors of heaven.
77:24 And he rained down manna upon them to eat: * and he gave them the bread of heaven.
77:25 Man ate the bread of Angels, * he sent them provisions in abundance.
77:26 He transferred the south wind from heaven: * and in his virtue, he brought in the Southwest wind.
77:27 And he rained down flesh upon them, as if it were dust: * and feathered birds, as if they were the sand of the sea.

1 Eliséus autem locútus est ad mulíerem, cuius vívere fécerat fílium, dicens: Surge, vade tu et domus tua et peregrináre ubicúmque repéreris; vocávit enim Dóminus famem, et véniet super terram septem annis.
2 Quæ surréxit, et fecit iuxta verbum hóminis Dei; et vadens cum domo sua, peregrináta est in terra Philísthiim diébus multis.
3 Cumque finíti essent anni septem, revérsa est múlier de terra Philísthiim: et egréssa est ut interpelláret regem pro domo sua, et pro agris suis.
1 Now Elisha spoke to the woman, whose son he had caused to live, saying: 'Rise up. Go, you and your household, and sojourn in whatever place you can find. For the Lord has called forth a famine, and it shall overwhelm the land for seven years.'
2 And she rose up, and she acted in accord with the word of the man of God. And going with her household, she sojourned in the land of the Philistines for many days.
3 And when the seven years had ended, the woman returned from the land of the Philistines. And she departed, so that she might petition the king on behalf of her house and on behalf of her fields.

4 Now the king was speaking with Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, saying, 'Describe for me all the great deeds that Elisha has done.'
5 And as he was describing for the king the manner in which he had raised the dead, the woman appeared, whose son he had restored to life, crying out to the king on behalf of her house and on behalf of her fields. And Gehazi said, 'My lord the king, this is the woman, and this is her son, whom Elisha raised up.'
6 And the king questioned the woman. And she explained it to him. And the king appointed a eunuch to her, saying, 'Restore to her all that is hers, with all the proceeds of the fields, from the day that she left the land until the present.'

7 Also, Elisha arrived in Damascus, and Benhadad, the king of Syria, was ill. And they reported to him, saying, 'The man of God has arrived here.'
8 And the king said to Hazael: 'Take with you gifts. And go to meet the man of God. And consult the Lord through him, saying: "Will I be able to escape from this, my infirmity?"'
9 And so, Hazael went to meet him, having with him gifts, and all the goods of Damascus, the burdens of forty camels. And when he had stood before him, he said: 'Your son, Benhadad, the king of Syria, sent me to you, saying: "Will I be able to be healed from this, my infirmity?"'
10 And Elisha said to him: 'Go, tell him: "You will be healed." But the Lord has revealed to me that, dying he shall die.'

Ignatius, a Spaniard by birth, of noble lineage from Loyola in Cantabria, first followed the court of the Catholic king, then the military life. While gravely laid up with a wound received in the defense of Pamplona, he was wonderfully inflamed by the chance reading of pious books to follow in the footsteps of Christ and the Saints. Going to Mount Serrat and laying down his arms before the altar of the Blessed Virgin, he kept vigil through the night and made his novitiate for the sacred soldiery. Thence, wearing sackcloth as he was, having first given his costly garments to a beggar, he withdrew to Manresa; where, living on begged bread and water, fasting except on Sundays, taming the flesh with a harsh chain and hairshirt, lying on the ground, and bloodying himself with iron whips, he remained for a year, so refreshed by clear illuminations from God that he was accustomed to say afterward: If the sacred Scriptures did not exist, he would nonetheless be prepared to die for the faith from those things alone which the Lord had revealed to him at Manresa. But above all, his care was to restore piety among Catholics. The splendor of the temples, the handing on of the catechism, the frequency of sermons and of the sacraments received increase from him. Our Lord and Savior, dearest brethren, admonishes us sometimes by words and sometimes by deeds. His very acts are precepts: for what he does in silence reveals what we ought to do. Behold, he sends the disciples forth in pairs to preach; for there are two commandments of charity, namely, the love of God and the love of neighbor; and charity cannot exist between fewer than two. For no one is said properly to have charity toward himself alone: but love reaches out to another, so that it may be charity.

Behold, the Lord sends out his disciples two by two to preach: that by this he may silently indicate to us that whoever has no charity toward another ought by no means to take up the office of preaching. And it is well said that he sent them before his face into every town and place where he himself was about to come. For the Lord follows his preachers: because preaching goes before, and then the Lord comes to the dwelling of our heart when the words of exhortation have run ahead; and thus truth is received into the mind.
