31 ingrediéntem Iehu per portam et ait: Numquid pax potest esse Zambri, qui interfécit dóminum suum?
32 Levavítque Iehu fáciem suam ad fenéstram et ait: Quæ est ista? Et inclinavérunt se ad eum duo vel tres eunúchi.
33 At ille dixit eis: Præcipitáte eam deórsum; et præcipitavérunt eam, aspersúsque est sánguine páries, et equórum úngulæ conculcavérunt eam.
34 Cumque introgréssus esset ut coméderet biberétque, ait: Ite et vidéte maledíctam illam et sepelíte eam, quia fília regis est.

29 In the eleventh year of Joram, the son of Ahab, Ahaziah reigned over Judah.
30 And Jehu went into Jezreel. But Jezebel, hearing of his arrival, painted her eyes with cosmetics, and adorned her head. And she watched through a window,
31 as Jehu was entering through the gate. And she said, 'Is it possible for there to be peace for Zimri, who killed his lord?'
32 And Jehu lifted up his face to the window, and he said, 'Who is this woman?' And two or three eunuchs bowed down before him.
33 And he said to them, 'Throw her down with force.' And they threw her forcefully, and the wall was splattered with her blood, and the hoofs of the horses trampled her.
34 And when he had entered, so that he might eat and drink, he said: 'Go, and see to that cursed woman, and bury her. For she is the daughter of a king.'

℟ Præparáte corda vestra Dómino, et servíte illi soli:

℟ Prepare your hearts to the Lord, and serve him alone:

Et liberábit vos de mánibus inimicórum vestrórum.

And he will deliver you from the hands of your enemies.

℣ Convertímini ad eum in toto corde vestro, et auférte deos aliénos de médio vestri.

℣ Turn to him with your whole heart, and put away the foreign gods from your midst.

35 And when they went to bury her, they found nothing but the skull, and the feet, and the ends of her hands.
36 And they returned and reported to him. And Jehu said: 'It is the word of the Lord, which he spoke through his servant, Elijah the Tishbite, saying: "In the field of Jezreel, the dogs will consume the flesh of Jezebel,
37 and the flesh of Jezebel will be like dung upon the face of the earth, in the field of Jezreel, so that those who pass by may say: Is this that same Jezebel?"'
1 Now Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. And so Jehu wrote letters, and he sent to Samaria, to the nobles of the city, and to those greater by birth, and to those who had raised Ahab's sons, saying:
2 'Immediately when you receive these letters, you who have your lord's sons, and chariots, and horses, and reinforced cities, and weapons,
3 choose him who is better and who pleases you from among the sons of your lord, and set him on the throne of his father, and fight for the house of your lord.'

6 Rescrípsit autem eis lítteras secúndo dicens: Si mei estis et obedítis mihi, tóllite cápita filiórum dómini vestri et veníte ad me hac eádem hora cras in Iézrahel. Porro fílii regis, septuagínta viri, apud optimátes civitátis nutriebántur.
7 Cumque veníssent lítteræ ad eos, tulérunt fílios regis et occidérunt septuagínta viros et posuérunt cápita eórum in cóphinis et misérunt ad eum in Iézrahel.

4 But they were vehemently afraid, and they said: 'Behold, two kings were not able to stand before him. So how will we be able to withstand him?'
5 Therefore, those who were in charge of the house, and the prefects of the city, and those greater by birth, and those who raised the sons, sent to Jehu, saying: 'We are your servants. Whatever you will order, we will do. But we will not appoint a king for ourselves. Do whatever pleases you.'
6 Then he again wrote letters to them a second time, saying: 'If you are mine, and if you obey me, take the heads of the sons of your lord, and come to me at Jezreel at this same hour tomorrow.'
7 And when the letters had arrived to them, they took the sons of the king, and they killed the seventy men. And they placed their heads in baskets, and they sent these to him at Jezreel.

Non putémus nos excusatiónem habitúros, si quando delictórum sócios invenérimus: nam istud, supplícium magis augébit. Quandóquidem et serpens magis punítus est quam múlier, quemádmodum et múlier plus quam vir. Et Iézabel maióres pœnas dedit, quam Achab víneæ raptor; ipsa quippe univérsum istud negótium texúerat, regíque lapsus occasiónem déderat. Igitur et tu quoque, si réliquis perditiónis causa fúeris, gravióra patiéris quam qui per te subvérsi sunt. Let us not think that we shall have any excuse when we have found accomplices in wrongdoing; for this will but increase the punishment. Since even the serpent was punished more severely than the woman, just as the woman more than the man. And Jezebel paid greater penalties than Ahab, the usurper of the vineyard; for she herself had woven the whole affair and had provided the king with occasion for his fall. Therefore you also, if you shall have been the cause of the ruin of others, will suffer more grievous things than those who were subverted through you. For to sin does not carry in itself such destruction as the fact that others are induced to sin.

Let us also keep perpetually before our minds that dread tribunal, the river of fire, the inextricable chains, the profound darkness, the gnashing of teeth, and the venomous worm. But you will say: God is kind. Then are all these things mere words? Is that rich man who despised Lazarus not punished? Are the foolish virgins not rejected by the bridegroom? Will those who did not feed Christ not go into the fire prepared for the devil? Will he who is in filthy garments not perish, bound hand and foot? Will he who exacted a hundred denarii from his fellow servant not be handed over to the torturers? Will that which was said of adulterers — that their worm shall not die, and their fire shall not be quenched — not prove true?

But does God merely threaten these things? Certainly, you will say. And from where, tell me, do you dare to speak publicly of so great a matter and pass judgment from yourself? For I shall be able to prove the contrary both from what God has said and from what he has done. But if you do not believe because of things yet to come, believe at least because of what has already been done. For the things that have been done and have come to pass in deed are certainly not mere threats and words. Who then flooded the whole earth by bringing on a deluge, and caused that dreadful shipwreck and utter destruction of our race? Who next hurled those thunderbolts and flaming darts upon the land of Sodom? Who drowned the entire army of Egypt in the sea? Who burned the synagogue of Abiron? Who killed seventy thousand on account of David's sin at a single moment by pestilence? Did not God bring all these and other things upon them?

For the Lord is high, and looks upon the humble; but the proud, such as that Pharisee was, he knows from afar. God indeed knows the proud from afar, but does not pardon them. Hear further the humility of the publican. It is a small matter that he stood at a distance; he did not even lift his eyes toward heaven: he did not look up to be looked upon; he did not dare to look upward. Conscience weighed him down; hope lifted him up. Hear further: He was striking his breast. He was exacting a punishment from himself; and therefore the Lord was sparing toward him as he confessed. He was striking his breast, saying: Lord, be merciful to me, a sinner. Behold the one who prays. Why do you marvel, if God forgives, when he himself acknowledges?
