Hymnus
Ætérna Christi múnera,
Apostolórum glóriam,
Palmas et hymnos débitos
Lætis canámus méntibus.
Ecclesiárum Príncipes,
Belli triumpháles duces,
Cæléstis aulæ mílites,
Et vera mundi lúmina.
Devóta Sanctórum fides,
Invícta spes credéntium,
Perfécta Christi cáritas
Mundi tyránnum cónterit.
In his Patérna glória,
In his triúmphat Fílius,
In his volúntas Spíritus,
Cælum replétur gáudio.
Patri, simúlque Fílio,
Tibíque Sancte Spíritus,
Sicut fuit, sit iúgiter
Sæclum per omne glória.
Amen.
Th' eternal gifts of Christ the King,
The Apostles' glory, let us sing;
And all with hearts of gladness raise
Due hymns of thankful love and praise.
For they the Church's princes are,
Triumphant leaders in the war,
The heavenly King's own warrior band,
True lights to lighten every land.
Theirs was the steadfast faith of saints,
The hope that never yields nor faints,
The love of Christ in perfect glow,
That lay the prince of this world low.
In them the Father's glory shone,
In them the Spirit's will was done,
The Son himself exults in them;
Joy fills the new Jerusalem.
Praise to the Father, with the Son,
And Holy Spirit, Three in One;
As ever was in ages past,
And so shall be while ages last.
Amen.

33:15 Turn away from evil, and do good: * inquire about peace, and pursue it.
33:16 The eyes of the Lord are on the just: * and his ears are with their prayers.

De libro secúndo Regum
From the Second Book of Kings
2 Reg 13:22-25
2 Reg 13:22-25
22 Yet Absalom did not speak to Amnon, neither good nor evil. For Absalom hated Amnon because he had violated his sister Tamar.
23 Then, after the time of two years, it happened that the sheep of Absalom were being shorn in Baal-hazor, which is near Ephraim. And Absalom invited all the sons of the king.
24 And he went to the king, and he said to him: 'Behold, the sheep of your servant are being shorn. I ask that the king, with his servants, may come to his servant.'
25 And the king said to Absalom: 'Do not, my son, do not choose to ask that we may all come and be a burden to you.' Then, after he urged him, and he had refused to go, he blessed him.
℟ Recordáre, Dómine, testaménti tui, et dic Angelo percutiénti: Cesset iam manus tua,
℟ Remember, O Lord, your covenant, and say to the Angel who strikes: Let your hand now be still,
That the land may not be laid waste, and that you may not destroy every living soul.
Avertátur, óbsecro, furor tuus, Dómine, a pópulo tuo.
℣ It is I who have sinned, it is I who have acted wickedly: these who are sheep, what have they done? Let your wrath, I beseech you, O Lord, be turned away from your people.
℣ Quiéscat, Dómine, ira tua a pópulo tuo, et a civitáte sancta tua:
℣ Let your anger, O Lord, be at rest from your people, and from your holy city:
℟ That the land may not be laid waste, and that you may not destroy every living soul.
℟ And David mourned with a great mourning over Saul and his sons, and said: How are the mighty fallen in battle,
Et periérunt arma béllica; ínclyti Israël, flete.
And the weapons of war perished; O noble men of Israel, weep.
℣ Montes Gélboë, nec ros nec plúvia super vos descéndant, ubi cecidérunt vulneráti multi:
℣ O mountains of Gilboa, let neither dew nor rain descend upon you, where many of the wounded fell:
℟ Et periérunt arma béllica; ínclyti Israël, flete.
℟ And the weapons of war perished; O noble men of Israel, weep.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benedictio. Unigénitus Dei Fílius nos benedícere et adiuváre dignétur.
Benedictio. May the Only Begotten Son of God be pleased to bless and assist us.

2 Reg 13:26-29
26 And Absalom said, 'If you are not willing to come, I beg you, at least let my brother Amnon come with us.' And the king said to him, 'It is not necessary that he go with you.'
27 But Absalom pressed him, and so he sent with him Amnon and all the sons of the king. And Absalom made a feast, like the feast of a king.
28 Then Absalom commanded his servants, saying: 'Observe when Amnon will have become drunk with wine. And when I say to you, Strike and kill him! do not be afraid. For it is I who commands you. Be strong and valiant men.'
29 Therefore, the servants of Absalom acted against Amnon, just as Absalom had commanded them. And all the sons of the king rose up, and each one climbed upon his mule and fled.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

2 Reg 13:30-34
30 And while they were still traveling on the journey, a rumor reached David, saying, 'Absalom has struck down all the sons of the king, and there is not one of them remaining.'
31 And so the king rose up, and he tore his garments, and he fell upon the ground. And all his servants who were standing near him tore their garments.
32 But Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David's brother, responding, said: 'My lord the king should not consider that all the sons of the king have been slain. Amnon alone is dead, because he had been set in the mouth of Absalom from the day on which he violated his sister Tamar.
33 Now therefore, let not my lord the king set this word in his heart, saying, All the sons of the king have been slain. For only Amnon is dead.'
34 Now Absalom fled.

Sermo sancti Ioánnis Chrysóstomi
Sermon of Saint John Chrysostom
Apud Metaphrasten
Apud Metaphrasten
Vos Christum imitáti estis in omnibus. In omnem terram éxiit vester sonus, et verba vestra in fines orbis terræ.
What thanks shall we render to you, O blessed Apostles, who labored so much for us? I think of you, Peter, and am struck with awe; I recall you, Paul, and am overcome with tears, carried out of myself. For what shall I say, or what shall I speak, as I contemplate your afflictions — I do not know. How many prisons did you hallow! How many chains did you adorn! How many torments did you endure! How many curses did you bear! How you carried Christ! How you gladdened the churches by your preaching! Blessed are the instruments of your tongues; your members were sprinkled with blood for the sake of the Church. You imitated Christ in all things. Their sound went forth into all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.
℟ Percússit Saul mille, et David decem míllia:
℟ Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands:
For the hand of the Lord was with him; he struck down the Philistine, and took away the reproach from Israel.
℣ Is not this David, of whom they sang in the chorus, saying: Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands?
℟ For the hand of the Lord was with him; he struck down the Philistine, and took away the reproach from Israel.
℟ Montes Gélboë, nec ros nec plúvia véniant super vos,
℟ O mountains of Gilboa, let neither dew nor rain fall upon you,
Ubi cecidérunt fortes Israël.
where the mighty of Israel have fallen.
℣ May the Lord visit all the mountains that surround it: but from Gilboa may he pass away.
℟ Ubi cecidérunt fortes Israël.
℟ where the mighty of Israel have fallen.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benedictio. Christus perpétuæ det nobis gáudia vitæ.
Benedictio. May Christ grant us the joys of eternal life.

Rejoice, Peter, to whom it was given to share in the wood of the cross of Christ. And indeed in likeness to your Master you wished to be crucified, yet not in the same upright position as Christ the Lord; but with your head turned to the ground, as one making his way from earth to heaven. Blessed are the nails that pierced those holy members. You with all confidence gave your soul into the hands of the Lord, you who served him and his bride the Church without ceasing, who loved the Lord with fervent spirit, most faithful of all the Apostles.
℟ Exaudísti, Dómine, oratiónem servi tui, ut ædificárem templum nómini tuo:
℟ You have heard, O Lord, the prayer of your servant, that I should build a temple for your name:
Bénedic et sanctífica domum istam in sempitérnum, Deus Israël.
Bless and sanctify this house for evermore, O God of Israel.
℣ O Lord, who keep your covenant with your servants who walk before you with their whole heart.
℟ Bénedic et sanctífica domum istam in sempitérnum, Deus Israël.
℟ Bless and sanctify this house for evermore, O God of Israel.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benedictio. Ignem sui amóris accéndat Deus in córdibus nostris.
Benedictio. May God kindle the fire of his love in our hearts.

Rejoice also, blessed Paul, whose head was cut off with the sword, whose virtues no words can express. What sword pierced your holy throat, that instrument, I say, of the Lord, which heaven holds in wonder and which the earth reveres? What place received your blood, appearing in the likeness of milk on the tunic of him who struck you? — which, rendering his soul beyond measure sweeter, made him faithful together with his companions. Let that sword be to me as a crown, and the nails of Peter as gems set in a diadem.
℟ I took you from your father's house, says the Lord, and I set you to shepherd the flock of my people:
Et fui tecum in ómnibus ubicúmque ambulásti, firmans regnum tuum in ætérnum.
And I was with you in all things, wherever you walked, establishing your kingdom for ever.
℣ And I made you a great name, after the name of the great ones who are on the earth; and I gave you rest from all your enemies.
℟ Et fui tecum in ómnibus ubicúmque ambulásti, firmans regnum tuum in ætérnum.
℟ And I was with you in all things, wherever you walked, establishing your kingdom for ever.
℣ Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
℟ Et fui tecum in ómnibus ubicúmque ambulásti, firmans regnum tuum in ætérnum.
℟ And I was with you in all things, wherever you walked, establishing your kingdom for ever.
℟ Lord, if your people have turned back and have prayed toward your sanctuary:
Tu exáudies in cælo, Dómine, et líbera eos de mánibus inimicórum eórum.
You will hear in heaven, O Lord, and deliver them from the hands of their enemies.
℣ Si peccáverit in te pópulus tuus, et convérsus égerit pœniténtiam, veniénsque oráverit in loco isto.
℣ If your people sin against you, and, having turned back, do penance, and come and pray in this place.
℟ You will hear from heaven, O Lord, and deliver them from the hands of their enemies.

74:3 We will declare your wonders: * when I have received the time, I will judge justices.
74:4 The earth has been dissolved, with all who dwell in it: * I have confirmed its pillars.
74:5 I said to the iniquitous: Do not act unjustly: * and to the offenders: Do not exalt the horn:
74:6 Do not exalt your horn on high: * do not speak iniquity against God.
74:7 For it is neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the desert mountains: * for God is judge.
74:8 This one he humbles, and that one he exalts: * for in the hand of the Lord there is a cup of undiluted wine, full of consternation.
74:9 And he poured from this one into that one: yet its dregs have not been emptied out: * all the sinners of the earth shall drink.

98:4 You have prepared guidance: * you have accomplished judgment and justice in Jacob.
98:5 Exalt the Lord our God, and adore the footstool of his feet: * for it is holy.
98:6 Moses and Aaron are among his priests: * and Samuel is among those who call upon his name.
98:6 They called upon the Lord, and he heeded them: * he spoke to them in the pillar of the cloud.
98:7 They kept his testimonies, * and the precept that he gave them.
98:8 You heeded them, O Lord our God: * O God, you were a forgiving God to them, though taking vengeance on all their inventions.
98:9 Exalt the Lord our God, and adore on his holy mountain: * for the Lord our God is holy.

Léctio sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum
A Reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew
Matt 14:22-33
Matt 14:22-33
In illo témpore: Cómpulit Iesus discipulos ascendere in naviculam, et præcedere eum trans fretum, donec dimítteret turbas. Et réliqua.
Homilía sancti Hierónymi Presbýteri
At that time: Jesus compelled his disciples to climb into the boat, and to precede him in crossing the sea, while he dismissed the crowds. And so forth.
From a Homily of Saint Jerome, Priest
Liber 2 Comment. in cap. 14 Matth.
Liber 2 Comment. in cap. 14 Matth.
Quo sermóne osténditur, invitos eos a Dómino recessisse, dum amóre Præceptoris ne punctum quidem témporis ab eo volunt separari.
The Lord commanded the disciples to cross the sea, and compelled them to board the boat. By this word it is shown that they departed from the Lord against their will, since out of love for their Teacher they wished not to be separated from him even for a moment. And, having dismissed the crowd, he ascended alone onto the mountain to pray. If the disciples Peter and James and John, who had seen the glory of the Transfiguration, had been with him, they might perhaps have ascended the mountain with him; but the crowd cannot follow to the heights, unless he has taught them beside the sea on the shore and fed them in the desert.
℟ I have sinned beyond the number of the sands of the sea, and my sins have been multiplied; and I am not worthy to look up to the height of heaven because of the multitude of my iniquity, for I have provoked your anger,
Et malum coram te feci.
And have done evil before you.
℣ Quóniam iniquitátem meam ego cognósco: et delíctum meum contra me est semper, quia tibi soli peccávi.
℣ For I acknowledge my iniquity, and my transgression is ever before me; because against you only have I sinned.
℟ Et malum coram te feci.
℟ And have done evil before you.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benedictio. Divínum auxílium máneat semper nobíscum.
Benedictio. May the divine assistance remain always with us.

But as for his ascending alone to pray, do not refer this to him who satisfied five thousand men from five loaves, not counting children and women; but to him who, having heard of the death of John, withdrew into solitude—not that we divide the one Lord into two persons, but because his works are divided between God and man. Now the boat was being tossed in the middle of the sea by the waves. Rightly had the Apostles, as if unwilling and reluctant, withdrawn from the Lord, lest, in his absence, they should suffer shipwreck.
℟ Duo Séraphim clamábant alter ad álterum:
℟ Two Seraphim cried out one to the other:
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God of hosts: * all the earth is filled with his glory.
℣ For there are Three who give testimony in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit. And these Three are One.
℟ Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus Dóminus Deus Sábaoth.
℟ Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God of hosts.
Amen.
℟ Plena est omnis terra glória eius.
℟ All the earth is filled with his glory.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benedictio. Ad societátem cívium supernórum perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum.
Benedictio. May the King of Angels lead us to the company of the citizens on high.

At length, while the Lord remained on the summit of the mountain, a contrary wind immediately arose, troubled the sea, and the Apostles were in peril; and the threatening shipwreck persisted for as long as Jesus had not yet come. But in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking upon the sea. Military watches and vigils are divided into periods of three hours. When therefore he says that the Lord came to them in the fourth watch of the night, he shows that they were in danger the whole night through; and that at the very end of the night, and at the consummation of the world, he will provide help for them.
We praise you, O God, * we acknowledge you as Lord.
All the earth * worships you, the eternal Father.
To you all the Angels, * to you the Heavens and all the Powers:
To you the Cherubim and Seraphim * with unceasing voice proclaim:

You are believed * to be the Judge who is to come.
