1 Et dixit Samuel ad Saul: Me misit Dóminus, ut úngerem te in regem super pópulum eius Israël; nunc ergo audi vocem Dómini.
2 Hæc dicit Dóminus exercítuum: Recénsui quæcúmque fecit Amalec Israéli, quómodo réstitit ei in via, cum ascénderet de Ægýpto.
3 Nunc ergo vade et pércute Amalec et demolíre univérsa eius: non parcas ei et non concupíscas ex rebus ipsíus áliquid; sed intérfice a viro usque ad mulíerem et párvulum atque lacténtem, bovem et ovem, camélum et ásinum.
1 The Lord sent me, so that I would anoint you as king over his people Israel. Now therefore, listen to the voice of the Lord.
2 Thus says the Lord of hosts: I have taken account of all that Amalek has done to Israel, how he stood against him in the way, when he ascended from Egypt.
3 Now therefore, go and strike Amalek, and demolish all that is his. You shall not spare him, and you shall not covet anything out of the things that are his. Instead, kill from man even to woman, and little ones as well as infants, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.

6 Dixítque Saul Cinǽo: Abíte, recédite atque descéndite ab Amalec, ne forte invólvam te cum eo; tu enim fecísti misericórdiam cum ómnibus fíliis Israël cum ascénderent de Ægýpto. Et recéssit Cinǽus de médio Amalec.
7 Percussítque Saul Amalec ab Hévila donec vénias ad Sur, quæ est e regióne Ægýpti.
8 Et apprehéndit Agag regem Amalec vivum; omne autem vulgus interfécit in ore gládii.
4 And so, Saul instructed the people, and he numbered them like lambs: two hundred thousand foot soldiers, and ten thousand men of Judah.
5 And when Saul had arrived as far as the city of Amalek, he placed ambushes at the torrent.
6 And Saul said to the Kenite: 'Go away, withdraw, and descend from Amalek. Otherwise, I will include you with him. For you showed mercy to all the sons of Israel, when they ascended from Egypt.' And so the Kenite withdrew from the midst of Amalek.
7 And Saul struck down Amalek, from Havilah even until you arrive at Shur, which is opposite the region of Egypt.
8 And he apprehended Agag, the king of Amalek, alive. But all the common people he put to death with the edge of the sword.

10 Factum est autem verbum Dómini ad Sámuel, dicens:
11 Pœ́nitet me quod constitúerim Saul regem, quia derelíquit me et verba mea ópere non implévit. Contristatúsque est Sámuel et clamávit ad Dóminum tota nocte.
9 And Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the flocks of sheep, and of the herds, and the garments, and the rams, and all that was beautiful, and they were not willing to destroy them. Yet truly, whatever was vile or worthless, these they demolished.
10 Then the word of the Lord came to Samuel, saying:
11 'It displeases me that I have appointed Saul as king. For he has forsaken me, and he has not fulfilled the work of my words.' And Samuel was greatly saddened, and he cried out to the Lord, all night long.

Juliana, of the noble Falconieri family, was born of a most illustrious father — who at his own expense magnificently erected from its foundations in Florence, as it is now visited, the temple of the Mother of God greeted by the Angel — and of her mother Reguardata; both already old and until that time childless, she was born in the year twelve hundred and seventy. Many women of the more noble families followed Juliana's example, and her own mother gave herself to be formed in the religious life by her daughter, so that, with the number gradually increasing, she established the Order of the Mantellate, and with the greatest prudence and holiness handed down to it the laws of a devout life. Since Saint Benizi had the most thorough knowledge of her virtues, when he was near death he wished to entrust no one more than Juliana not only with the women but with the entire Order of the Servants, of which he had been the propagator and director. Yet she herself always thought humbly of herself; and, though she was the teacher of the others, she served her sisters in every domestic task, however lowly. By her assiduousness in prayer she would spend entire days most often rapt in ecstasy; and if any time remained, she devoted it to calming civil disputes, drawing sinners back from the way of iniquity, and serving the sick; and at times, licking with her mouth the pus flowing from their sores, she would restore them to health. She was accustomed to mortify her body with scourges, knotted cords, iron girdles, vigils, and lying naked on the ground. From such a harsh manner of living she fell into an illness of the stomach, which grew more serious as she entered her seventieth year of age, reducing her to the very last span of her life. She bore the inconveniences of her long illness with a serene countenance and steadfast spirit; she was heard to complain of only one thing: that, being unable in any way to take or retain food, she was kept from the Eucharistic table out of reverence for the Sacrament. But in this extremity she asked a priest to take the divine Bread that had been brought and, since she could not receive it by mouth, at least to apply it externally to her breast. The priest did as she asked; and — a marvel! — at that very moment the divine Bread disappeared, and Juliana breathed her last with a serene and smiling face. The matter was beyond belief for a long time, until the virginal body was cared for in the customary way; for there was found upon the left side of her breast, as if imprinted on her flesh like a seal, the form of a host depicting the figure of Christ crucified. The fame of this prodigy and of her other miracles won her the veneration not only of Florence but of the whole Christian world, and was so greatly increased over nearly four full centuries that at last Pope Benedict XIII ordered the proper Office to be recited at her feast by the entire order of the Servants of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Clement XII, most generous protector of the same order, enrolled her, shining with miracles new each day, in the catalogue of the holy Virgins.

But when they came to Jesus, since they saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs; but one of the soldiers opened his side with a lance, and immediately there went out blood and water. The Evangelist used a watchful word, so as not to say: he struck his side, or wounded it, or anything else, but opened it; so that there, in a manner of speaking, the door of life might be thrown open, from which the Sacraments of the Church flowed forth, without which one does not enter into life, which is true life. That blood was shed for the forgiveness of sins. That water tempers the saving cup; it also furnishes both a washing and a drink. This was foreshadowed when Noah was commanded to make a door in the side of the ark, through which the animals that were not to perish in the flood might enter — by which animals the Church was prefigured.
