7 Dixítque ei ármiger suus: Fac ómnia, quæ placent ánimo tuo, perge quo cupis, et ero tecum ubicúmque volúeris.
8 Et ait Iónathas: Ecce nos transímus ad viros istos. Cumque apparuérimus eis,
9 si táliter locúti fúerint ad nos: Manéte donec veniámus ad vos; stemus in loco nostro nec ascendámus ad eos.
10 Si autem díxerint: Ascéndite ad nos; ascendámus, quia trádidit eos Dóminus in mánibus nostris: hoc erit nobis signum.

6 Then Jonathan said to the youth who bore his armor: 'Come, let us go across to the garrison of these uncircumcised. Perhaps the Lord will act on our behalf, for it is not difficult for the Lord to save, whether by many or by few.'
7 And his armor bearer said to him: 'Do all that is pleasing to your soul. Go wherever you wish, and I will be with you wherever you wish.'
8 And Jonathan said: 'Behold, we will cross over to these men. And when we will be seen by them,'
9 if they have spoken to us in this way, 'Stay until we come to you,' let us stand still in our place, and not ascend to them.
10 But if they will say, 'Ascend to us,' let us ascend. For the Lord has delivered them into our hands. This will be the sign to us.
11 And so, both of them appeared before the garrison of the Philistines. And the Philistines said, 'See, the Hebrews have come out from the holes in which they had been hiding.'

14 Et facta est plaga prima, qua percússit Iónathas et ármiger eius, quasi vigínti virórum, in média parte iúgeri, quam par boum in die aráre consuévit.
15 Et factum est miráculum in castris per agros; sed et omnis pópulus statiónis eórum, qui íerant ad prædándum, obstúpuit, et conturbáta est terra, et áccidit quasi miráculum a Deo.

12 And the men of the garrison spoke to Jonathan and to his armor bearer, and they said, 'Ascend to us, and we will show you something.' And Jonathan said to his armor bearer: 'Let us ascend. Follow me. For the Lord has delivered them into the hands of Israel.'
13 Then Jonathan ascended, crawling on his hands and feet, and his armor bearer after him. And then, some fell before Jonathan, others his armor bearer killed as he was following him.
14 And the first slaughter was made when Jonathan and his armor bearer struck down about twenty of the men, in the midst of an area of land that a yoke of oxen would usually plow in a day.
15 And a miracle occurred in the camp, out in the fields. And all of the people of their garrison, who had gone out in order to plunder, were stupefied. And the earth trembled. And it happened as a miracle from God.

19 And while Saul spoke to the priest, there arose a great tumult in the camp of the Philistines. And it was increasing, little by little, and it was being heard more clearly. And Saul said to the priest, 'Withdraw your hand.'
20 Then Saul, and all the people who were with him, cried out together, and they went to the place of the conflict. And behold, each one's sword had been turned against his neighbor, and there was a very great slaughter.

Ephrem was a Syrian by race, born of a father from Nisibis. While still young he went to Saint Jacob the Bishop, by whom he was baptized, and made such swift progress in holiness and learning that he was appointed master in the flourishing school of Nisibis, a city of Mesopotamia. After the death of Bishop Jacob, Nisibis having been captured by the Persians, he set out for Edessa; where he first settled on a mountain among monks, and then, to avoid the great numbers of men who flocked to him, led the eremitic life. Ordained deacon of the church of Edessa, and refusing the priesthood out of humility, he shone with the splendor of every virtue and strove to acquire piety and religion by true profession of wisdom. Fixing all hope in God alone, despising all human and transitory things, he continually desired the divine and eternal.

All his works, so filled with the splendid light of learning, had the effect that this same Saint, while still living, was held in great honor as a Doctor of the Church. He also composed metrical hymns in praise of the most blessed Virgin Mary and of the Saints: for which reason he was rightly called by the Syrians the harp of the Holy Spirit. He excelled above all in a wonderful and devout devotion to the same immaculate Virgin. Full of merits, he died at Edessa in Mesopotamia on the eighteenth of June, under the prince Valens; and him,

Sermo de vita et exercitatione monastica

Præclarum est bonum inchoare atque perficere, et gratum Deo esse et utilem proximo, ipsique summo ac dulcissimo rectori nostro Christo Iesu placere, qui ait: Vos estis sal terræ, et columna cælorum. Labor afflictionis tuæ, dilectissime, tamquam somnus est; porro laboris requies inenarrabilis atque inæstimabilis. Attende ergo tibi ipsi sollicite, ne utrumque pariter amittas, dum neutrum plene persequeris, præsentem scilicet sempiternamque lætitiam. Stude potius perfectam virtutem consequi, ornatam atque insignitam omnibus quæ diligit Deus. Hanc si assequaris, numquam irritabis Deum, neque proximum tuum violabis.

It is a noble thing to begin and to complete what is good, and to be pleasing to God and useful to one's neighbor, and to be acceptable to our supreme and most sweet ruler, Christ Jesus, who says: You are the salt of the earth and the pillar of the heavens. The labor of your affliction, most beloved, is like a sleep; but the rest from that labor is unspeakable and beyond all reckoning. Take care, therefore, attentively for yourself, lest you lose both together by fully pursuing neither: that is to say, both present and eternal joy. Strive rather to attain perfect virtue, adorned and distinguished with all that God loves. If you attain this, you will never provoke God, nor will you wrong your neighbor.

Diadema regium absque pretiosis lapidibus candentibusque margaritis connecti texique non potest; ita et hæc unica virtus sine variarum fulgore virtutum constare nequit. Est enim profecto simillima diademati regio. Nam, ut illi, si lapis unus aut margarita defuerit, in regio capite lucere pleniter nequit; ita et hæc unica virtus, nisi virtutum ceterarum honore conseritur, perfecta virtus non appellatur. Similis item est pretiosissimis epulis, exquisitissimis condimentis præparatis, sed sale carentibus. Sicut enim pretiosi illi cibi sine sale comedi nequeunt; ita et ista virtus uniformis, si variarum virtutum gloria et honore decoretur, absit autem Dei proximique dilectio, vilis prorsus atque contemptibilis est.

Furthermore, this virtue is called singular and of a single kind, possessing within itself the beauty of the various virtues. A royal diadem cannot be woven and fashioned without precious stones and gleaming pearls; so too this singular virtue cannot stand without the radiance of the various virtues. For it is indeed most like a royal diadem. For as with a diadem, if one stone or pearl is missing, it cannot shine fully upon the royal head; so too this singular virtue, unless it is adorned with the honor of the other virtues, is not called a perfect virtue. It is likewise similar to the most precious foods, prepared with the most exquisite seasonings, but lacking salt. For just as those precious foods cannot be eaten without salt; so too this uniform virtue, even if it is adorned with the glory and honor of the various virtues, yet if the love of God and neighbor be absent, is utterly base and contemptible.

From those things, moreover, that came to pass, the most wise Evangelist confirms to his hearers that he is the Christ who was foretold of old by the holy Scriptures; for what happened was in agreement with the divine oracles concerning him. For neither was his bone broken, and he was pierced through by the soldier's lance, according to the Scriptures. And he says that the disciple himself who bears witness to these things was a spectator of that event, and that he knows that his testimony is true, denoting himself by these words, and not another.
