Hymnus
Auctor beáte sǽculi,
Christe, Redémptor ómnium,
Lumen Patris de lúmine,
Deúsque verus de Deo.
Amor coégit te tuus
Mortále corpus súmere,
Ut novus Adam rédderes,
Quod vetus ille abstúlerat.
Ill[e] amor, almus ártifex
Terræ marísqu[e], et síderum,
Erráta patrum míserans,
Et nostra rumpens víncula.
Non Corde discédat tuo
Vis ill[a] amóris íncliti:
Hoc fonte gentes háuriant
Remissiónis grátiam.
Percúss[um] ad hoc est láncea,
Passúmqu[e] ad hoc est vúlnera:
Ut nos laváret sórdibus,
Unda fluént[e], et sánguine.
Iesu, tibi sit glória,
Qui Corde fundis grátiam,
Cum Patr[e], et almo Spíritu,
In sempitérna sǽcula.
Amen.
O Christ, the world's Creator bright,
Who didst mankind from sin redeem,
Light from the Father's glorious light,
True God of God, in bliss supreme.
Thy love compelled thee to assume
A mortal body, man to save;
Reversing the old Adam's doom;
Our ransom the new Adam gave.
That love which gloriously framed all
The earth, the stars, and wondrous sea
Took pity on our parents' fall,
Broke all our bonds and set us free.
O Saviour, let thy potent love
Flow ever from thy bounteous heart;
To nations that pure fount above
The grace of pardon will impart.
His heart for this was opened wide,
And wounded by the soldier's spear,
That freely from his sacred side
Might flow the streams our souls to clear.
Glory to Father and to Son,
And to the Holy Ghost the same,
To whom all power, when time is done,
And endless rule, in endless fame.
Amen.

Psalmus 32
Psalm 32
32:1 Exsultáte, iusti, in Dómino: * rectos decet collaudátio.
32:2 Confitémini Dómino in cíthara: * in psaltério decem chordárum psállite illi.
32:3 Cantáte ei cánticum novum: * bene psállite ei in vociferatióne.
32:7 Cóngregans sicut in utre aquas maris: * ponens in thesáuris abýssos.
32:22 Fiat misericórdia tua, Dómine, super nos: * quemádmodum sperávimus in te.
32:1 Exult in the Lord, you just ones: * together, praise the upright.
32:2 Confess to the Lord with stringed instruments: * sing psalms to him with the psaltery of ten strings.
32:3 Sing to him a new song: * sing psalms to him skillfully, with loud exclamation.
32:4 For the word of the Lord is upright, * and all his works are in faith.
32:5 He loves mercy and judgment: * the earth is full of the mercy of the Lord.
32:6 By the word of the Lord, the heavens were established: * and all their power, by the Spirit of his mouth:
32:7 Gathering together the waters of the sea, as if in a container: * placing the depths in storage.
32:8 Let all the earth fear the Lord: * and may all the inhabitants of the world quake before him.
32:9 For he spoke, and they became: * he commanded, and they were created.
32:10 The Lord scatters the counsels of the nations: * but he reproves the thoughts of the peoples, and he rejects the counsels of the leaders.
32:11 But the counsel of the Lord remains for eternity: * the thoughts of his heart from generation to generation.
32:12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, * the people whom he has chosen as his inheritance.
32:13 The Lord has looked down from heaven: * he has seen all the sons of men.
32:14 From his well-prepared dwelling place * he has gazed upon all who dwell on the earth.
32:15 He has formed the hearts of each one of them: * he understands all their works.
32:16 The king is not saved by great power: * nor will the giant be saved by his many powers.
32:17 The horse is false safety: * for he will not be saved by the abundance of his powers.
32:18 Behold, the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him: * and on those who hope in his mercy:
32:19 So as to rescue their souls from death: * and to feed them during famine.
32:20 Our soul remains with the Lord: * for he is our helper and protector.
32:21 For in him, our heart will rejoice: * and in his holy name, we have hoped.
32:22 Let your mercy be upon us, O Lord: * just as we have hoped in you.
℣ Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

Psalmus 35
Psalm 35
35:2 The unjust one has said within himself that he would commit offenses: * there is no fear of God before his eyes.
35:3 For he has acted deceitfully in his sight: * such that his iniquity will be found to be hatred.
35:4 The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit: * he is unwilling to understand, so that he may act well.
35:5 He has been considering iniquity on his bed: * he has set himself on every way that is not good; moreover, he has not hated evil.
35:6 Lord, your mercy is in heaven: * and your truth is even to the clouds.
35:7 Your justice is like the mountains of God: * your judgments are a great abyss.
35:7 Men and beasts, you will save, O Lord: * how you have multiplied your mercy, O God.
35:8 And so the sons of men * will hope under the cover of your wings.
35:9 They will be inebriated with the fruitfulness of your house: * and you will give them to drink from the torrent of your enjoyment.
35:10 For with you is the fountain of life: * and within your light, we will see the light.
35:11 Extend your mercy before those who know you, * and your justice to these, who are upright in heart.
35:12 May arrogant feet not approach me: * and may the hand of the sinner not disturb me.
35:13 In that place, those who work iniquity have fallen: * they have been expelled; they were not able to stand.
℣ Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Psalmus 40
Psalm 40
40:8 Advérsum me susurrábant omnes inimíci mei: * advérsum me cogitábant mala mihi.
40:10 Étenim homo pacis meæ, in quo sperávi: * qui edébat panes meos, magnificávit super me supplantatiónem.
40:12 In hoc cognóvi quóniam voluísti me: * quóniam non gaudébit inimícus meus super me.
40:13 Me autem propter innocéntiam suscepísti: * et confirmásti me in conspéctu tuo in ætérnum.
40:14 Benedíctus Dóminus, Deus Israël, a sǽculo et usque in sǽculum: * fiat, fiat.
40:2 Blessed is he who understands concerning the needy and the poor: * the Lord will deliver him in the evil day.
40:3 The Lord preserve him, and give him life, and make him blessed upon the earth: * and deliver him not up to the will of his enemies.
40:4 The Lord help him upon his bed of sorrow: * you have turned all his couch in his sickness.
40:5 I said: O Lord, be merciful to me: * heal my soul, for I have sinned against you.
40:6 My enemies have spoken evil of me: * When shall he die and his name perish?
40:7 And if one came to see me, he spoke vain things: * his heart gathered iniquity to itself.
40:7 He went out, * and spoke to the same purpose.
40:8 All my enemies whispered against me: * they devised evil against me.
40:9 They determined against me an unjust word: * Will he who sleeps rise no more?
40:10 For even the man of my peace, in whom I trusted: * who ate my bread, has greatly supplanted me.
40:11 But you, O Lord, have mercy on me, and raise me up again: * and I will repay them.
40:12 By this I know that you have had a good will toward me: * because my enemy shall not rejoice over me.
40:13 But you have upheld me by reason of my innocence: * and have established me in your sight for ever.
40:14 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, from age to age: * so be it, so be it.

From the First Book of Kings
1 Reg 9:18-21
1 Reg 9:18-21
18 Then Saul drew near to Samuel, at the middle of the gate, and he said, 'Tell me, I beg you: where is the house of the seer?'
19 And Samuel responded to Saul, saying: 'I am the seer. Ascend before me to the high place, so that you may eat with me today. And I will send you away in the morning. And I shall reveal to you everything that is in your heart.
20 And concerning the donkeys, which were lost the day before yesterday, you should not be anxious, for they have been found. And all the best things of Israel, for whom should they be? Will they not be for you and for all your father's house?'
21 And responding, Saul said: 'Am I not a son of Benjamin, the least tribe of Israel, and are not my kindred the last among all the families from the tribe of Benjamin? So then, why would you speak this word to me?'
℟ Præparáte corda vestra Dómino, et servíte illi soli:

1 Reg 9:22-25
22 And so Samuel, taking Saul and his servant, brought them into the dining room, and he gave them a place at the head of those who had been invited; for there were about thirty men.
23 And Samuel said to the cook: 'Present the portion that I gave to you, and which I instructed you to set apart beside you.'
24 Then the cook lifted up the shoulder, and he placed it before Saul. And Samuel said: 'Behold, what remains, set it before you and eat. For deliberately has it been kept for you, when I called the people.' And so Saul ate with Samuel on that day.
25 And they descended from the high place into the town, and he spoke with Saul in the upper room. And he set out a bed for Saul in the upper room, and he slept.

1 Reg 9:26-27; 10:1
26 And when they had risen in the morning, and it now began to be light, Samuel called to Saul in the upper room, saying: 'Rise up, so that I may send you on.' And Saul arose, and both of them went out, namely Saul and Samuel.
27 And as they were descending to the very limit of the city, Samuel said to Saul: 'Tell the servant to go ahead of us and continue on. But as for you, stay here a little while, so that I may reveal to you the word of the Lord.'
1 Then Samuel took a little vial of oil, and poured it on his head. And he kissed him, and said: 'Behold, the Lord has anointed you as first ruler over his inheritance. And you shall free his people from the hands of their enemies, who are all around them.'

Psalmus 93
Psalm 93
93:13 Ut mítiges ei a diébus malis: * donec fodiátur peccatóri fóvea.
93:17 Nisi quia Dóminus adiúvit me: * paulo minus habitásset in inférno ánima mea.
93:18 Si dicébam: Motus est pes meus: * misericórdia tua, Dómine, adiuvábat me.
93:19 Secúndum multitúdinem dolórum meórum in corde meo: * consolatiónes tuæ lætificavérunt ánimam meam.
93:20 Numquid adhǽret tibi sedes iniquitátis: * qui fingis labórem in præcépto?
93:21 Captábunt in ánimam iusti: * et sánguinem innocéntem condemnábunt.
93:22 Et factus est mihi Dóminus in refúgium: * et Deus meus in adiutórium spei meæ.
93:23 Et reddet illis iniquitátem ipsórum: et in malítia eórum dispérdet eos: * dispérdet illos Dóminus, Deus noster.
93:1 The Lord is the God of retribution: * the God of retribution acts in order to deliver.
93:2 Lift yourself up, for you judge the earth: * repay the arrogant with retribution.
93:3 How long will sinners, O Lord, * how long will sinners glory:
93:4 How long will they utter and speak iniquity: * how long will all who work injustice speak out?
93:5 They have humiliated your people, O Lord: * and they have harassed your inheritance.
93:6 They have executed the widow and the new arrival: * and they have slaughtered the orphan.
93:7 And they have said: The Lord will not see, * nor will the God of Jacob understand.
93:8 Understand, you senseless ones among the people: * and be wise at last, you foolish ones.
93:9 He who formed the ear, will he not hear? * And he who forged the eye, does he not look closely?
93:10 He who chastises nations, will he not rebuke: * he who teaches man knowledge?
93:11 The Lord knows the thoughts of men, * that these are in vain.
93:12 Blessed is the man whom you will instruct, O Lord: * and you will teach him from your law,
93:13 So may you soothe him from the evil days: * until a pit may be dug for sinners.
93:14 For the Lord will not drive away his people: * and he will not abandon his inheritance.
93:15 Even until the time when justice is converted into judgment: * and when those who are close to it are all those who are upright of heart.
93:16 Who will rise up with me against the malignant? * Or who will stand with me against the workers of iniquity?
93:17 Except that the Lord assisted me: * my soul almost would have dwelt in Hell.
93:18 If ever I said, My foot is slipping: * your mercy, O Lord, assisted me.
93:19 According to the multitude of my sorrows in my heart: * your consolations have given joy to my soul.
93:20 Does the seat of iniquity adhere to you: * you who contrive hardship within a commandment?
93:21 They will hunt down the soul of the just: * and they will condemn innocent blood.
93:22 And the Lord has been made into a refuge for me: * and my God into the assistance of my hope.
93:23 And he will repay them their iniquity, and he will destroy them in their malice: * the Lord our God will utterly destroy them.

But certainly among the other things that pertain properly to the cult of the most sacred Heart, the holy and memorable act of consecration stands out, by which we, referring ourselves and all our possessions to the love of the eternal Godhead, devote ourselves to the divine Heart of Jesus. Yet there must be added another duty, namely that of honorable satisfaction, or reparation as they call it, to be rendered to the most sacred Heart of Jesus. For if the first and chief element in consecration is that the love of the creature be returned for the love of the Creator, the second follows of its own accord from this, that to the same uncreated Love, if it has at any time been neglected through forgetfulness or violated through offense, the injuries thus inflicted in any manner are to be made good: which debt we call by the common name of reparation.
℟ Percússit Saul mille, et David decem míllia:
℟ Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands:
For the hand of the Lord was with him; he struck down the Philistine, and took away the reproach from Israel.
℣ Is not this David, of whom they sang in the chorus, saying: Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands?
℟ For the hand of the Lord was with him; he struck down the Philistine, and took away the reproach from Israel.

℟ O mountains of Gilboa, let neither dew nor rain fall upon you,
Ubi cecidérunt fortes Israël.
where the mighty of Israel have fallen.
℣ May the Lord visit all the mountains that surround it: but from Gilboa may he pass away.

But if we are moved toward both things by precisely the same reasons, we are nevertheless bound by a duty of reparation and expiation for a stronger title of justice and of love: of justice, indeed, that the offense inflicted upon God by our transgressions may be expiated and the violated order restored by penance; but of love, that we may suffer with Christ suffering and 'saturated with opprobrium,' and bring him some consolation, however slight, in our poverty. For since we are all sinners, burdened with many faults, we must honor our God not only with that worship by which we adore his supreme Majesty with due homage, or acknowledge his supreme dominion by prayer, or praise his infinite generosity with acts of thanksgiving; but we must also make satisfaction to God, the just avenger, 'for our innumerable sins and offenses and negligences.' To the consecration, therefore, by which we dedicate ourselves to God and are called holy to God, with the sanctity and firmness which, as the Angelic Doctor teaches, is proper to consecration, must be added expiation, by which sins may be thoroughly extinguished, lest perchance the holiness of supreme justice repel our unworthiness as impudent, and spurn as odious rather than receive as welcome our gift.
℟ Montes Gélboë, nec ros nec plúvia véniant super vos,
℟ O mountains of Gilboa, let neither dew nor rain fall upon you,

℣ May the Lord visit all the mountains that surround it: but from Gilboa may he pass away.
℟ Ubi cecidérunt fortes Israël.
℟ where the mighty of Israel have fallen.
℟ Exaudísti, Dómine, oratiónem servi tui, ut ædificárem templum nómini tuo:
℟ You have heard, O Lord, the prayer of your servant, that I should build a temple for your name:
Bénedic et sanctífica domum istam in sempitérnum, Deus Israël.
Bless and sanctify this house for evermore, O God of Israel.

Benedictio. May God kindle the fire of his love in our hearts.

This office of expiation, moreover, falls upon the whole human race: for, as we are taught by the Christian faith, after the miserable fall of Adam it was infected by hereditary stain, subject to concupiscence, and most wretchedly depraved, and would have been hurled to eternal perdition. This, indeed, the proud wise men of our age, following the ancient error of Pelagius, deny, boasting of some native virtue of human nature by which it advances of its own power to higher things; but the Apostle rejects these false inventions of human pride, reminding us: by nature we were children of wrath. And indeed, from the very beginning, men seem to have recognized, as it were, the debt of that common expiation, and, led by a certain natural instinct, began to devote themselves to placating God with sacrifices, both public and private.

A Reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke
Luc 15:1-10
Luc 15:1-10
At that time: Tax collectors and sinners were drawing near to Jesus, so that they might listen to him. And so forth.
A Homily of Saint Gregory the Pope
Homilia 34 in Evangelium, n. 2-3, post initium
Homilia 34 in Evangelium, n. 2-3, post initium
You have heard in the Gospel reading, my brethren, that sinners and tax collectors drew near to our Redeemer: and they were received not only to speak with him, but also to eat with him. On seeing this, the Pharisees were contemptuous. From this, gather that true righteousness has compassion, while false righteousness has contempt. Although the righteous are also wont rightly to be contemptuous of sinners: but one thing is what is done through the pride of arrogance, and another what is done through the zeal of discipline.
℟ I have sinned beyond the number of the sands of the sea, and my sins have been multiplied; and I am not worthy to look up to the height of heaven because of the multitude of my iniquity, for I have provoked your anger,
Et malum coram te feci.
And have done evil before you.
℣ Quóniam iniquitátem meam ego cognósco: et delíctum meum contra me est semper, quia tibi soli peccávi.
℣ For I acknowledge my iniquity, and my transgression is ever before me; because against you only have I sinned.
℟ Et malum coram te feci.
℟ And have done evil before you.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benedictio. Divínum auxílium máneat semper nobíscum.
Benedictio. May the divine assistance remain always with us.

For they rebuke without disdaining; they despair without despairing; they stir up persecution yet with love — for even if outwardly they intensify reproaches through discipline, yet inwardly they preserve sweetness through charity. They often place before themselves in their souls the very ones they correct; they consider better even those whom they judge. In doing this, they both keep their subjects through discipline and preserve themselves through humility.
℟ Duo Séraphim clamábant alter ad álterum:
℟ Two Seraphim cried out one to the other:
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God of hosts: * all the earth is filled with his glory.
℣ For there are Three who give testimony in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit. And these Three are One.
℟ Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus Dóminus Deus Sábaoth.
℟ Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God of hosts.
Amen.
℟ Plena est omnis terra glória eius.
℟ All the earth is filled with his glory.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benedictio. Ad societátem cívium supernórum perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum.
Benedictio. May the King of Angels lead us to the company of the citizens on high.

They, on the contrary, who are accustomed to pride themselves on a false righteousness, despise all others and do not condescend with any mercy to the infirm: in the very degree that they do not believe themselves to be sinners, they become sinners all the worse. Of their number, assuredly, were those Pharisees who, judging the Lord for receiving sinners, were rebuking with their withered heart the very fountain of mercy. But because they were sick in such a way as not to know themselves to be sick, the heavenly Physician, that they might come to recognize what they were, healed them with gentle remedies, set before them a kindly example, and pressed down the swelling of the wound in their heart.
We praise you, O God: * we acknowledge you as Lord.
All the earth worships you, * O Father everlasting.
To you all Angels, * to you the Heavens and all the Powers,
To you the Cherubim and Seraphim * cry out without ceasing:
