12 Blessed is the man who suffers temptation. For when he has been proven, he shall receive the crown of life which God has promised to those who love him.

Philip, born at Bethsaida, one of the twelve Apostles, who were the first called by Christ the Lord: by him, when Nathanael had been told that the Messiah promised in the Law had come, he was brought to the Lord. How familiarly Christ made use of him is easily shown by the fact that the Gentiles who desired to see the Savior came to Philip; and the Lord, when he wished to feed a multitude of men in a desert place, addressed Philip thus: Where shall we buy bread for these to eat? Having received the Holy Spirit, when Scythia had fallen to him for the preaching of the Gospel, he converted nearly the whole of that people to the Christian faith. Finally, when he had come to Hierapolis in Phrygia, he was fastened to a cross and overwhelmed with stones for the name of Christ, on the Kalends of May. His body was buried there by Christians, and was afterward brought to Rome and interred in the basilica of the twelve Apostles together with the body of the blessed Apostle James.

James the Brother of the Lord, surnamed the Just, from his earliest age drank neither wine nor strong drink, abstained from flesh, was never shorn, and used neither ointment nor bath. To him alone was it permitted to enter into the Holy of Holies. He also wore linen garments; and the constant practice of prayer had so hardened the skin on his knees that in hardness they resembled the hide of a camel. After the Ascension of Christ, the Apostles appointed him bishop of Jerusalem; to him also the Prince of the Apostles sent word to announce that he had been led out of prison by an Angel. And when at the council of Jerusalem a controversy arose concerning the law and circumcision, James, following the opinion of Peter, addressed an address to the brethren, in which he approved the call of the Gentiles and declared that absent brethren should be written to, that they should not impose on the Gentiles the yoke of the Mosaic law. Concerning him the Apostle also speaks to the Galatians: But of the other Apostles I saw none, except James the brother of the Lord.

Such was the holiness of James's life that people eagerly contended to touch the hem of his garment. For when he was ninety-six years old, having most holily presided over that Church for thirty years, while most steadfastly preaching Christ the Son of God, he was first set upon with stones; then, being led to the highest part of the Temple, he was thrown down from it. And, with his legs broken, lying half-dead, he stretched out his hands to heaven and prayed to God for their salvation with these words: Forgive them, O Lord, for they know not what they do. While he was at prayer, his head was struck with a heavy blow from a fuller's club, and he gave up his soul to God in the seventh year of Nero; and he was buried next to the Temple from which he had been cast down. He wrote one Epistle, which is among the seven Catholic ones.

Erigénda est nobis, fratres, ad Deum maior inténtio, ut verba sancti Evangélii, quæ modo in nostris áuribus sonuérunt, étiam mente cápere utcúmque possímus. Ait enim Dóminus Iesus: Non turbétur cor vestrum. Créditis in Deum, et in me crédite. Ne mortem tamquam hómines timérent, et ídeo turbaréntur, consolátur eos, étiam se Deum esse contéstans. We must, brothers, lift up our minds to God with greater attention, so that we may be able in some way to grasp in our minds the words of the holy Gospel that have just resounded in our ears. For the Lord Jesus says: Let not your heart be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. Lest they should fear death as men, and be troubled on that account, he consoles them, bearing witness that he himself is also God. You believe, he says, in God; believe also in me. For it follows that if you believe in God, you ought also to believe in me — which would not follow unless Christ were God.

You believe in God, and believe in him for whom it is a matter of nature, not of robbery, to be equal to God; for he emptied himself — yet not losing the form of God, but taking on the form of a servant. You fear death for this form of a servant: let not your heart be troubled; the form of God will raise it up. But what is it that follows: In my Father's house there are many mansions, unless it is because they feared even for themselves? Wherefore they needed to hear: Let not your heart be troubled. For which of them would not have feared, when it was said to Peter, the bolder and readier: The cock will not crow until you deny me three times?
