1 Vocávit ad se Tobías fílium suum, dixítque ei: Quid póssumus dare viro isti sancto, qui venit tecum?
2 Respóndens Tobías, dixit patri suo: Pater, quam mercédem dábimus ei? aut quid dignum póterit esse benefíciis eius?
3 Me duxit et redúxit sanum, pecúniam a Gabélo ipse recépit, uxórem ipse me habére fecit, et dæmónium ab ea ipse compéscuit: gáudium paréntibus eius fecit, meípsum a devoratióne piscis erípuit, te quoque vidére fecit lumen cæli, et bonis ómnibus per eum repléti sumus. Quid illi ad hæc potérimus dignum dare?
4 Sed peto te, pater mi, ut roges eum, si forte dignábitur medietátem de ómnibus quæ alláta sunt, sibi assúmere.

1 Then Tobit called his son to him, and he said to him, "What are we able to give to this holy man, who accompanied you?"
2 Tobias, answering, said to his father: "Father, what wages shall we give him? And what could be worthy of his benefits?"
3 He led me and he brought me back safely. He received the money from Gabael. He caused me to have my wife. And he confined the demon away from her. He caused joy to her parents. Myself, he rescued from being devoured by the fish. As for you, he also caused you to see the light of heaven. And so, we have been filled with all good things through him. What could we possibly give to him that would be worthy of these things?
4 But I implore you, my father, to ask him if he would perhaps deign to take for himself half of all the things that have been brought.

℟ In that time the prayers of both were heard in the sight of the glory of the Most High God:

And the holy Angel of the Lord, Raphael, was sent to heal them both, whose prayers were recited before the Lord at the same time.

13 Et quia accéptus eras Deo, necésse fuit ut tentátio probáret te.

5 And calling him, the father especially, and the son, they took him aside; and they began to petition him, so that he would deign to accept ownership of one half part of all things that they had brought.
6 Then he said to them privately: Bless the God of heaven, and confess to him in the sight of all who live, for he has acted in his mercy toward you.
7 For it is good to conceal the secret of a king, just as it is also honorable to reveal and to confess the works of God.
8 Prayer with fasting is good, and almsgiving is better than hiding away gold in storage;
9 for almsgiving delivers from death, and the same is what purges sins and makes one able to find mercy and everlasting life.
10 But those who commit sin and iniquity are enemies to their own soul.
11 Therefore, I reveal the truth to you, and I will not hide the explanation from you.
12 When you prayed with tears, and buried the dead, and left behind your dinner, and hid the dead by day in your house, and buried them by night: I offered your prayer to the Lord.
13 And because you were acceptable to God, it was necessary for you to be tested by trials.

℟ Tobias went out and found a splendid young man standing girded and seemingly ready for travel, and he greeted him and said:

℣ And, not knowing that he was an Angel of the Lord, he greeted him and said.

16 And when they had heard these things, they were troubled, and being seized with fear, they fell upon the ground on their face.
17 And the Angel said to them: Peace be to you. Fear not.
18 For when I was with you, I was there by the will of God. Bless him, and sing to him.
19 Indeed, I seemed to eat and drink with you, but I make use of an invisible food and drink, which cannot be seen by men.
20 Therefore, it is time that I return to him who sent me. But as for you, bless God, and describe all his wonders.
21 And when he had said these things, he was taken from their sight, and they were not able to see him any longer.
22 Then, lying prostrate for three hours upon their face, they blessed God. And rising up, they described all his wonders.

Blessed Tobias, who knew how to break his bread for the hungry, prepares a prompt wage for the laboring hired man. We listened patiently to the reading which was just recited, and marveled at the exchange between father and son, as the Angel — whom they thought a mere earthly hired man under his celestial glory — gives counsel. For this purpose he incurred the calamity of blindness: to receive as physician the Angel, who, enkindled by divine torches, breathed after such things. Honest is prayer with fasting and almsgiving. The prayer of the just is the key of heaven. Prayer ascends, and the mercy of God descends. Though the earth be high, and heaven high, yet God hears the tongue of man, if he has a clean conscience. He speaks with the senses, if our groaning be his alone. The rain of tears suffices for his ears: weeping he hears sooner than voices. The prayer of the envious is wont to be driven away from his ears. The soul of father and son was one: while there was a distinction of members, there was in them a singular kinship of souls. Son, he said, let us dismiss this man, adding to the agreed wage, for he has brought us many good things by his labor; and he began to urge the hired man to take the due of his wage. Brother, he said, take what is yours and then go in safety. Receive your wage, for you have shown good mercy to me and to my son. Take, as I said, half the substance which we brought back with my son: for the grace which we owe you cannot be weighed.

Straightway the Angel rejoices over the reward he had considered, who had been sent to perform an act of piety freely. Tobias, he says — or Tobit — why do you think so much and more than enough about my reward? Keep what the heavenly Father has given you. I am the minister of the healing; he is the author of the health. You do not know by the help of what servant you have merited to profit. You were not afraid to bury the dead of the captivity: Tobias, your works have ascended to the Lord, because, leaving your meal, you returned the dead man to burial. I offered rich sacrifices to the Lord for the venerable burial. I am sent as a worker of the heavenly forum. You buried the dead, and you did not fear the sting of death. He himself, buried for you, proclaimed it in silent voice. The blindness of your eyes had been for a test, so that your patience might more gloriously merit an adornment from heaven. I am Raphael, one of the seven Angels who stand before the splendor of God. I have no need of the fruit of human reward; converse with Majesty makes me rich. Rich is he who sent me: freely he commanded to be spent what he himself freely granted. Nor should you attribute the very honor of thanks to me, because you received nothing through my own powers. Bless God, and give thanks to him, and glorify him, because he has done good things with you.

When the honor of the heavenly mystery was suddenly made known, Tobis and Tobias, astonished at the voice of the Archangel Raphael, fell prostrate on the ground and completely hid their trembling voice, because they had heard an unaccustomed voice. Why were you afraid, father Tobis and son Tobias? Did you think you had hired a heavenly being and, as it were, engaged an angel as an earthly laborer? The Angel concealed his name from you: I am Azarias, he said, the son of the great Ananias; he did not say: I am the Angel Raphael. He concealed the dignity of his name at first, lest he cause terror to the one who had hired him. For if he had said: I am an Angel, he could not have been Tobias's hired man. The dignity of the name was kept back, so that the greatness of the dignity might become clear in the end. See, beloved, how great is the merit of almsgiving: it merited having an Angel as a hired man. See how profitable it is to bury the dead, so that his offering might ascend through the Angel Raphael to the heavenly majesty. See, because almsgiving delivers from death and itself cleanses sins, makes a cleansing of the eyes, delivers from the darkness of sins. Tobis is led on his way; Sara, saddened by so many husbands, is united in marriage through the Angel.

Plus est enim ad salútem nostram, quod factus est propter hómines, quam quod fecit inter hómines: et plus est, quodvitia sanavitanimarum, quam quod sanávit languóres córporum moriturorum.

We ought not to be amazed but rather to rejoice at the miracle made by God: for it would be amazing if a man had made it. More should we rejoice than marvel that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was made man, rather than that he worked divine deeds among men as God. For it is more for our salvation that he was made for men's sake, than what he did among men; and it is more that he healed the sins of souls, than that he healed the ailments of bodies that were to die.

If we consider what he did with a mediocre and, as it were, merely human grasp and understanding — with respect to power, it was not a great thing he accomplished; and with respect to kindness, he did but little. So many were lying there, and one was healed, when he could have raised all with a single word.
