16 And it was heard at Rome, and even in Sparta, that Jonathan had passed away. And they were very sorrowful.
17 But when they heard that Simon, his brother, had been made high priest in his place, and that he obtained the entire country and the cities in it,
18 they wrote to him on tablets of brass, so as to renew the friendship and alliance, which they had made with Judas and with Jonathan, his brothers.
19 And they were read in the sight of the assembly at Jerusalem. And this is a copy of the letters that the Spartans sent:

22 And we wrote down what was said by them in the councils of the people, as follows: 'Numenius, the son of Antiochus, and Antipater, the son of Jason, ambassadors of the Jews, came to us to renew the former friendship with us.
23 And it pleased the people to receive the men gloriously, and to place a copy of their words in a section of the public books, so as to be a memorial for the people of the Spartans. Furthermore, we have written a copy of them to Simon, the great priest.'

℟ The nations have gathered in multitude to fight against us, and we do not know what we ought to do:

O Lord God, our eyes are upon you, lest we perish.

℣ Tu scis quæ cógitant in nos: quómodo potérimus subsístere ante fáciem illórum, nisi tu ádiuves nos?

℣ You know what they plot against us: how shall we be able to stand before their face, unless you help us?

The divine word says: Do not praise a man in his life; as if to say: Praise after life, magnify after its completion. For there are two reasons why it is more useful to give praise to the memory of men rather than to their life: so that you extol the merits of holiness most especially at that time when neither does flattery move the one who praises, nor does pride tempt the one who is praised.

Formidolósa senténtia, si iuxta nostram mentem senténtia Dei fléctitur, atque mutátur: si parva frátribus non dimíttimus, magna nobis a Deo non dimitténtur. So then my heavenly Father will do to you, if you do not each forgive your brother from your hearts. A fearful sentence, if the judgment of God is bent and changed according to our own mind: if we do not forgive our brothers their small offenses, our great offenses will not be forgiven by God. And because each person can say: I have nothing against him, he knows it, he has God as his judge; I care not what he wishes to do, I have forgiven him: he confirms his sentence and overturns every pretense of a feigned peace, saying: If you do not forgive, each one his brother, from your hearts.
