22 Et ait rursus Elías ad pópulum: Ego remánsi prophéta Dómini solus, prophétæ autem Baal quadringénti et quinquagínta viri sunt.
21 Then Elijah, drawing near to all the people, said: 'How long will you waver between two sides? If the Lord is God, follow him. But if Baal is, then follow him.' And the people did not respond a word to him.
22 And Elijah said again to the people: 'I alone remain as a prophet of the Lord. But the prophets of Baal are four hundred and fifty men.'
℟ Peccávi super númerum arénæ maris, et multiplicáta sunt peccáta mea: et non sum dignus vidére altitúdinem cæli præ multitúdine iniquitátis meæ: quóniam irritávi iram tuam,

23 "Let two oxen be given to us. And let them choose one ox for themselves, and, cutting it into pieces, let them set it on the wood. But they may not place fire under it. And I will prepare the other ox, and set it on the wood. But I will not place fire under it.
24 Call upon the names of your gods. And I will call on the name of my Lord. And the God who will have heeded with fire, let him be God." And in response, all the people said, "Excellent proposition."

As they were being led away to punishment, the man asked pardon of James; and James, kissing him, said: "Peace be to you." And so both were beheaded, James having shortly before healed a paralytic. His body was afterward translated to Compostela, where it is honored with the greatest solemnity, pilgrims from the whole world gathering there out of devotion and by vow. The observance of his birth into heaven is celebrated by the Church on this day, which is the day of the translation, while he himself, around the feast of Easter, was the first of the Apostles to give testimony to Jesus Christ at Jerusalem by shedding his blood.

Hac enim de causa eórum modo imperféctio revelátur, ut apérte percípere possis quales súbito per grátiam effécti fuérunt. Quod ígitur nihil spiritále petébant nec de cælésti regno quidquam cogitábant, perspícuum est. Sed tamen inspiciámus étiam quómodo accédant et quid dicant. Let no one be troubled if we say that the Apostles were so imperfect; for the mystery of the Cross had not yet been accomplished, nor had the grace of the Spirit yet been poured into their hearts. But if you wish to learn of their virtue — what they were like after the grace of the Spirit had been given — consider it, and you will see that every perverse affection had been overcome in them. For this reason their imperfection is now revealed, so that you may clearly perceive what kind of men they suddenly became through grace. That they were asking for nothing spiritual and thinking of nothing concerning the heavenly Kingdom is evident. But let us also consider how they approach and what they say. We wish, they say, that whatever we shall ask, you do for us. To which Christ replied, What do you wish? — not because he was ignorant, certainly, but so as to compel them to answer and to lay bare the wound, and thus to apply the remedy.

They, however, blushing and held back by shame, because they had come to this by human feeling, took Christ aside from the other disciples and questioned him. For they went apart, he says, lest they be exposed before the others; and only thus did they say what they wished. They wished, as I surmise, since they had heard the disciples would sit on twelve thrones, to obtain the primacy of that assembly; and knowing indeed that they would be placed before the others, but fearing that Peter would be preferred to themselves, they dared to say: Command that one sit at your right hand, and the other at your left. And they press him, saying: Command. What then does he say? To show them that they were seeking nothing spiritual, and did not even know what they were asking — for they would not dare to ask if they knew — he says: You do not know what you ask; you do not know how great this is, how marvelous, exceeding even the highest powers.

Consider moreover how by the very manner of his question he both exhorts and entices them. For he did not say: Can you submit to slaughter, can you shed your blood? But: In what manner can you drink the chalice? Then, enticing them, he said: That I am about to drink; so that by that very sharing of labors with him they might be made more ready.
