2 Cecidítque Ochozías per cancéllos cœnáculi sui, quod habébat in Samaría, et ægrotávit; misítque núntios dicens ad eos: Ite, consúlite Beélzebub deum Accaron, utrum vívere queam de infirmitáte mea hac.
3 Angelus autem Dómini locútus est ad Elíam Thesbíten dicens: Surge et ascénde in occúrsum nuntiórum regis Samaríæ et dices ad eos: Numquid non est Deus in Israël, ut eátis ad consuléndum Beélzebub deum Accaron?
4 Quam ob rem hæc dicit Dóminus: De léctulo, super quem ascendísti, non descéndes, sed morte moriéris.

1 Then, after the death of Ahab, Moab transgressed against Israel.
2 And Ahaziah fell down through the lattices of his upper room, which he had in Samaria, and he was injured. And he sent messengers, saying to them, 'Go, consult Beelzebub, the god of Ekron, as to whether I may be able to survive this infirmity of mine.'
3 And an Angel of the Lord spoke to Elijah, the Tishbite, saying: 'Rise up, and ascend to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria. And you shall say to them: Is there not a God in Israel, so that you would go to consult Beelzebub, the god of Ekron?'
4 For this reason, thus says the Lord: From the bed to which you have ascended, you shall not descend. Instead, dying you shall die.' And Elijah went away.

In the readings recited to us on these days, dearest brothers, I have frequently warned you not to follow the letter that kills, lest we be left behind by the life-giving spirit. For thus the Apostle says: For the letter kills, but the spirit gives life. If indeed we wish to understand only what sounds in the letter, we shall draw little or almost no edification from the divine readings. For all those things that are recited were a type and image of things to come. Figured in the Jews, they have been fulfilled in us by the gift of God's grace.

Cui ex qua culpa eversiónis suæ pœna fúerit illáta, subiúngitur: Eo quod non cognóveris tempus visitatiónis tuæ. Creátor quippe hóminum per incarnatiónis suæ mystérium hanc visitáre dignátus est; sed ipsa timóris et amóris ílius recordáta non est. Unde étiam per prophétam in increpatióne cordis humáni aves cæli ad testimónium deducúntur, dum dícitur: Milvus in cælo cognóvit tempus suum, turtur et hirúndo et cicónia custodiérunt tempus advéntus sui; pópulus autem meus non cognóvit iudícium Dómini.

The punishment inflicted for the fault that caused its ruin is added: Because you did not recognize the time of your visitation. For the Creator of men deigned to visit it through the mystery of his Incarnation; but the city did not remember his fear and love. Hence also through the prophet the birds of heaven are brought in as witnesses to the reproach of the human heart, where it is said: The kite in the sky knows its time; the turtle-dove and the swallow and the stork have kept the time of their coming; but my people have not known the judgment of the Lord.

For the Redeemer first wept over the ruin of the faithless city, which the city itself did not know was coming upon it. To which city the Lord, weeping, rightly says: 'Because if you had known, even you' — understand: you would weep — 'you who now, not knowing what is imminent, are rejoicing.' Whence it is further added: 'And indeed on this your day, which belongs to your peace.'
