O God, the lot, crown, and reward
of your soldiers:
as we sing the praises of the Martyr,
free us from the bond of sin.

For he, reckoning the joys of this world
and the enticing food of deception
as bitter gall,
arrived at the things of heaven.

He ran bravely through his punishments
and bore them manfully,
and, shedding his blood for you,
now possesses eternal gifts.

For this, with suppliant prayer
we entreat you, most merciful One;

1 Venit autem Róboam in Sichem; illuc enim congregátus erat omnis Israël ad constituéndum eum regem.
2 At vero Ieróboam fílius Nabat, cum adhuc esset in Ægýpto prófugus a fácie regis Salomónis, audíta morte eius, revérsus est de Ægýpto.
3 Miserúntque et vocavérunt eum. Venit ergo Ieróboam, et omnis multitúdo Israël, et locúti sunt ad Róboam, dicéntes:
4 Pater tuus duríssimum iugum impósuit nobis; tu ítaque nunc immínue páululum de império patris tui duríssimo, et de iugo gravíssimo quod impósuit nobis, et serviémus tibi.
5 Qui ait eis: Ite usque ad tértium diem, et revertímini ad me.

1 Then Rehoboam went to Shechem. For in that place, all of Israel had gathered to appoint him as king.
2 Yet truly, Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, while he was still in Egypt as a fugitive from the face of king Solomon, hearing of his death, returned from Egypt.
3 And they sent and called him. Therefore, Jeroboam went, with the entire multitude of Israel, and they spoke to Rehoboam, saying:
4 Your father imposed a very harsh yoke upon us. And so, you should now take away a little from the very harsh rule of your father and from his very grievous yoke, which he imposed upon us, and we will serve you.
5 And he said to them, 'Go away, until the third day, and then return to me.'

℟ Præparáte corda vestra Dómino, et servíte illi soli:

℟ Prepare your hearts to the Lord, and serve him alone:

6 king Rehoboam took counsel with the elders who had assisted before his father Solomon while he was still living. And he said, "What counsel do you give to me, so that I may respond to this people?"
7 They said to him, "If today you will obey and serve this people, and yield to their petition, and if you will speak lenient words to them, they will be your servants for all days."
8 But he abandoned the counsel of the old men, which they had given to him. And he consulted the young men who had been raised with him, and who were assisting him.

13 And the king responded to the people harshly, leaving behind the counsel of the elders that they had given to him.
14 And he spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying: "My father weighed down your yoke, but I will add more to your yoke. My father cut you with whips, but I will beat you with scorpions."
15 And the king did not acquiesce to the people. For the Lord had turned him away, so that he might raise up his word, which he had spoken by the hand of Ahijah, the Shilonite, to Jeroboam, the son of Nebat.
16 And so the people, seeing that the king had not been willing to listen to them, responded to him, saying: "What part do we have in David? Or what inheritance do we have in the son of Jesse?"

He hid for some time with certain Christians, and from there set out into Aemilia, where he raised to life the dead daughter of the patrician Rufinus; so that the whole family of Rufinus believed in Jesus Christ on that account. The prefect, greatly enraged, summoned Apollinaris and dealt with him more harshly, demanding that he put an end to spreading the faith of Christ in the city. When Apollinaris disregarded his commands, he was tortured on the rack; boiling water was poured into his wounds, and his mouth was struck with a stone: then, bound with iron chains, he was shut up in prison. On the fourth day he was put on a ship and sent into exile; and having suffered shipwreck he came to Moesia, thence to the bank of the Danube, and afterwards to Thrace.

When the demon in the temple of Serapis refused to give responses while a disciple of the Apostle Peter was staying there, Apollinaris was long sought and at last found: he was again ordered to sail. Returning thus to Ravenna, accused by those same priests of idols, he was handed over to a centurion for custody; who, himself secretly venerating Christ, released Apollinaris by night. When this became known, soldiers pursued him, and having beaten him on the road, left him as they believed dead. When the Christians had taken him from there, on the seventh day he exhorted them to steadfastness in the faith, and, glorious in the grace of martyrdom, departed this life. His body was buried near the wall of the city.

Regnum Dei non est de hoc mundo. Non ergo æqualitátis hómini ad Deum, sed similitúdinis æmulátio est. Solus enim Christus est plena imago Dei, propter expressam in se Paternæ claritúdinis unitátem. Iustus autem homo ad imáginem Dei est, si propter imitandam divinæ conversatiónis similitúdinem mundum hunc Dei cognitióne contemnat, voluptatesque terrenas verbi perceptióne despíciat, quo álimur in vitam: unde et corpus Christi édimus, ut vitæ ætérnæ possímus esse participes.

The Kingdom of God is not of this world. It is not, therefore, an equality of man with God, but a striving after likeness. For Christ alone is the full image of God, by reason of the unity of the Father's splendor expressed in himself. Yet the just man is in the image of God, if, for the sake of imitating the likeness of the divine life, he despises this world by the knowledge of God, and scorns earthly pleasures by receiving the Word by which we are nourished unto life: and hence we eat the Body of Christ, that we may be able to be sharers of eternal life.

Non enim victus et potus nobis præmii loco spondétur et honoris, sed communicátio gratiæ cæléstis et vitæ. Neque duodecim throni tamquam áliqua corporalis sunt receptácula sessiónis. Sed, quia sicut secúndum divinam similitúdinem iúdicat Christus cognitióne cordium, non interrogatióne factórum, virtútem remúnerans, impietatémque condemnans; ita et Apóstoli in iudícium spiritale formántur remuneratióne fidei et exsecratióne perfidiæ, virtúte errórem redarguéntes, sacrílegos ódio persequéntes.

For food and drink are not promised to us as reward and honor, but the sharing of heavenly grace and life. Nor are the twelve thrones any kind of bodily seats for sitting. But because, just as Christ judges according to the divine likeness by the knowledge of hearts, not by the interrogation of deeds, rewarding virtue and condemning impiety, so also the Apostles are formed for spiritual judgment by the reward of faith and the execration of perfidy, reproving error by virtue, pursuing the sacrilegious with hatred.

Let us be converted, therefore, and let us beware lest there can be among us any contention leading to ruin over precedence. For if the Apostles contended, this is set forth not as an excuse but as a warning. If Peter was at some point converted, who had followed at the first word of the Lord, who can say that he was quickly converted? Beware, therefore, of boastfulness; beware of the world. For he is commanded to strengthen his brothers who said: We have left all things and followed you.
