For she who had formerly remained cold through sinning, afterward burned mightily through loving. She would not withdraw from the Lord's tomb, even when the disciples withdrew. She sought him whom she had not found; she wept as she sought, and, kindled by the fire of her love, she burned with desire for him whom she believed had been taken away. Hence it came about that she alone then saw him who had remained in order to seek: for without doubt the virtue of a good work is perseverance.

We seek our Beloved upon our bed when, in the brief repose of the present life, we sigh with longing for our Redeemer. We seek him by night: because, even if the mind already keeps vigil for him, yet the eye is still dimmed.

But since one who does not find his beloved must rise, must go round the city — that is, must traverse the holy Church of the elect in mind and inquiry — and seek him through the streets and the broad ways, that is, must look at those who walk by narrow and broad paths, so that if he can find any trace of him in them, he may seek his footsteps: for there are some even in secular life who have something imitable in the exercise of virtue. But those who seek are found by the watchmen who keep the city: because the holy Fathers who guard the state of the Church come to meet our good endeavors, to teach us by their word or their writing. And when we have passed a little beyond them, we find him whom we love: because our Redeemer, though in humanity he was man among men, was yet in his divinity above men.

Vidístis enim, non carne, sed mente, Dóminum Iesum Christum in domo pharisǽi recumbéntem, et ab illo invitátum non fastidiéntem. As the Gospel was read, you heard it with the closest attention; and the event narrated was turned over and set before the eyes of your heart. You saw — not with the flesh, but with the mind — the Lord Jesus Christ reclining at table in the house of the Pharisee, not disdaining the invitation of one who had invited him. You also saw in the city a notorious woman — notorious, that is, for a bad reputation — a sinner, who had not been invited, yet burst in upon the banquet where her physician reclined, and sought healing through pious boldness; breaking in as if an unwelcome intruder upon the banquet, yet timely for the benefit. For she knew how great a disease she suffered; and she knew that he to whom she had come was fit to heal her.

Because, therefore, she touched the Lord by pouring, kissing, wiping, and anointing his feet, the Pharisee who had invited the Lord Jesus Christ — being of that race of proud men of whom the prophet Isaiah says: 'Who say, Depart far from me; do not touch me, for I am clean' — supposed that the Lord did not know the woman.

O Pharisee, inviter and mocker of the Lord — you feed the Lord, and you do not understand from whom you are to be fed. How do you know that the Lord was ignorant of who that woman was, unless because she was permitted to draw near, unless because, with his assent, she was allowed to approach and to weep? Or rather, knew he not this woman, but the fount of mercy? He knew well who she was; therefore he permitted her approach, that he might demonstrate what he was about to do, and show how powerful the grace of repentance is, and what profit comes from humility of heart.
