2 Ministrántibus autem illis Dómino et ieiunántibus, dixit illis Spíritus Sanctus: Segregáte mihi Saulum et Bárnabam, in opus ad quod assúmpsi eos.
3 Tunc ieiunántes et orántes imponentésque eis manus dimisérunt illos.

1 Now there were, in the Church at Antioch, prophets and teachers, among whom were Barnabas, and Simon, who was called the Black, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manahen, who was the foster brother of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
2 Now as they were ministering for the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said to them: 'Separate Saul and Barnabas for me, for the work for which I have selected them.'
3 Then, fasting and praying and imposing their hands upon them, they sent them away.
4 And having been sent by the Holy Spirit, they went to Seleucia. And from there they sailed to Cyprus.

8 Resistébat autem illis Elymas magus (sic enim interpretátur nomen eius) quærens avértere procónsulem a fide.

5 And when they had arrived at Salamis, they were preaching the Word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. And they also had John in the ministry.
6 And when they had traveled throughout the entire island, even to Paphos, they found a certain man, a magician, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Bar-Jesu,
7 who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a prudent man. This man, summoning Barnabas and Saul, wanted to hear the Word of God.
8 But Elymas the magician (for so his name is translated) stood against them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the Faith.

And therefore a crown of righteousness is laid up for me.

11 And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you. And you will be blinded, not seeing the sun for a length of time.' And immediately a mist and darkness fell upon him, and going about, he sought someone to lead him by the hand.
12 Then the proconsul, when he had seen what was done, believed, being in wonder over the doctrine of the Lord.

To whom would the just Judge render the crown, if the merciful Father had not first bestowed grace? And how would this crown be one of justice, if grace, which justifies the ungodly, had not gone before? How would that which is owed be rendered, unless what is freely given had first been granted?

For, even though I could also bring about the contrary, and not permit you to suffer anything grievous, nor to be subjected to wolves as sheep, but to make you more terrible than lions — yet it is thus expedient for things to be done; this also will make you more illustrious and will manifest my power. For he later said to Paul: My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. It is I, then, who have made you to be such as you are.

But let us consider what prudence it requires: assuredly that of the serpent. For just as the serpent commits itself wholly, and does not care in the least if its very body must be cut, so long as it keeps its head intact; so too you should care nothing for losing the rest, apart from the faith, whether it be necessary to pour out your money, your body, or even life itself. For faith is the head and the root; and once it is preserved, even if you lose everything, you will recover everything again with greater glory. For this reason he commanded them to be neither merely simple nor merely prudent, but mingled both of these into one, that they might be turned into virtue.

But if you desire to see by actual events that this is so done, read the book of the Acts of the Apostles; you will see clearly that, when the people of the Jews often rose up against the Apostles and gnashed their teeth, those men, by imitating the simplicity of the dove and by responding with befitting modesty, overcame their anger, extinguished their fury, and slowed their assault. For when they said: Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? although they could have displayed countless miracles, they nevertheless said and did nothing harsh; but answering with the greatest gentleness they said: Whether it is right before God to obey you rather than God, judge for yourselves. You have seen the simplicity of the dove; now see the prudence of the serpent: For we cannot, they say, but speak the things which we have seen and heard.
