The martyrs' triumphs let us sing,

2 Qui dixit ei: Absit, non moriéris; neque enim fáciet pater meus quidquam grande vel parvum nisi prius indicáverit mihi; hunc ergo celávit me pater meus sermónem tantúmmodo? Nequáquam erit istud.

1 Then David fled from Naioth, which is in Ramah, and he went and said before Jonathan: 'What have I done? What is my iniquity, or what is my sin, against your father, so that he would seek my life?'
2 And he said to him: 'May this not be! You shall not die. For my father will not do anything, great or small, without first revealing it to me. Therefore, has my father concealed this word solely from me? By no means shall this be!'

4 Et ait Iónathas ad David: Quodcúmque díxerit mihi ánima tua, fáciam tibi.

3 And he swore again to David. And David said: 'Your father certainly knows that I have found favor in your sight, and so he will say, Let Jonathan not know this, lest he be saddened.' So truly, as the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, there is only one step (if I may say it) separating me from death.
4 And Jonathan said to David, 'Whatever your soul will tell me, I will do for you.'

6 If your father, looking around, will seek me, you shall respond to him: David asked me if he may hurry to Bethlehem, his own city. For there are solemn sacrifices in that place for all of his tribe together.
7 If he will say, It is well, then your servant will have peace. But if he will be angry, know that his malice has reached its height.'

John and Paul, Roman brothers, when, with the possessions left to them by Constantia the daughter of Constantine whom they had served devoutly and faithfully, they were supporting the poor of Christ, were invited by Julian the Apostate into the number of his household; but they freely refused to remain with one who had apostatized from Jesus Christ. He set them ten days for deliberation, so that they might know for certain that they must die unless by that day they resolved to adhere to him and sacrifice to Jupiter.

Within that time they distributed their remaining goods to the poor, so that they might migrate to the Lord more unencumbered and might assist more who would receive them in the eternal tabernacles. On the tenth day Terentianus, prefect of the praetorian cohort, was sent to them carrying a statue of Jupiter for them to venerate; he set forth the emperor's command that unless they rendered worship to Jupiter, they should die. They, as they were praying, replied that they would not hesitate to die for the faith of Christ, whom they worshipped in mind and on their lips as God.

Terentianum, fearing lest, if they were put to death publicly, the people might be stirred up, caused their heads to be struck off at home, where they then were, on the sixth day before the Kalends of July, and arranged for them to be buried in secret; and he spread the rumor that John and Paul had been sent into exile. But their death was made known by unclean spirits, which vexed the bodies of many; among them was Terentianum's own son, himself likewise afflicted by a demon, who was led to the tomb of the Martyrs and set free. Moved by this miracle, he himself came to believe in Christ, as did his father Terentianum; by whom also the life of these blessed Martyrs is said to have been written.

Nam, sicut módicum ferméntum totam farínæ, cui iniícitur, massam corrúmpit, universámque mox conspersiónem suo sapóre commáculat; sic nimírum simulátio, cuius semel ánimum imbúerit, tota virtútum sinceritáte et veritáte fraudábit. Est ergo sensus: Atténdite ne æmulémini simulatóres; quia véniet profécto tempus, in quo et vestra virtus ómnibus, et eórum revelétur hypócrisis.

Concerning this leaven the Apostle gave instruction: Therefore, let us feast, not with the old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. For just as a little leaven corrupts the whole mass of dough into which it is thrown, and soon taints the entire mixture with its own flavor; so likewise simulation, once it has steeped the mind, will defraud it of all the sincerity and truth of the virtues. The meaning is therefore: Beware lest you imitate dissemblers; because the day of judgment will come, on which both your virtue will be revealed to all, and their hypocrisy will be unmasked.

But what follows — For what you said in darkness will be spoken in the light — can be fittingly understood not only of the future, when all the hidden things of hearts will be brought to light, but also of the present time. For what the Apostles spoke or suffered amid the darkness of former persecutions and the shadows of prisons, is now publicly proclaimed throughout the world, as the Church has been glorified, when their Acts are read. Do not be afraid of those who kill the body. If the persecutors of the Saints, having slain the bodies, have nothing further to do against them: then their frenzy was in vain, they who cast the dead members of the Martyrs to be torn apart by wild beasts and birds, since they cannot in any way resist the omnipotence of God from raising them up and restoring them to life.

Now there are two kinds of persecutors: one that rages openly, and another that beguiles with feigning and deceit. Wishing to fortify and instruct us against both, the Saviour commands us above to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and here not to fear the slaughter of executioners; because, after death, neither the cruelty of the latter nor the dissembling of the former can endure. Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings? If, he says, the most insignificant creatures, and birds that fly hither and thither through the air, God cannot forget — you, who have been made in the image of the Creator, ought not to be terrified by those who kill the body; because he who governs irrational creatures does not cease to care for rational ones.
