1 Congregántes autem Philísthiim ágmina sua in prǽlium convenérunt in Socho Iudæ, et castrametáti sunt inter Socho et Azéca in fínibus Dommim.
2 Porro Saul et fílii Israël congregáti venérunt in Vallem terebínthi, et direxérunt áciem ad pugnándum contra Philísthiim.
3 Et Philísthiim stabant super montem ex parte hac, et Israël stabat supra montem ex áltera parte, vallísque erat inter eos.
4 Et egréssus est vir spúrius de castris Philisthinórum nómine Góliath de Geth altitúdinis sex cubitórum et palmi.
5 Et cassis ǽrea super caput eius, et loríca squamáta induebátur; porro pondus lorícæ eius quinque míllia siclórum æris erat.

1 Now the Philistines, gathering their troops for battle, assembled at Socoh of Judah. And they made camp between Socoh and Azekah, within the borders of Dammim.
2 But Saul and the sons of Israel, having gathered together, went to the Valley of Terebinth. And they positioned the army so as to fight against the Philistines.
3 And the Philistines were standing on a mountain on the one side, and Israel was standing on a mountain on the other side. And there was a valley between them.
4 And there went out from the camp of the Philistines, a man of illegitimate birth, named Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a palm.
5 And he had a helmet of brass upon his head, and he was clothed with a breastplate of scales. Moreover, the weight of his breastplate was five thousand shekels of brass.
6 And he had plates of brass on his lower legs, and a small shield of brass was covering his shoulders.
7 Now the shaft of his spear was like the beam used by a weaver. And the iron of his spear held six hundred shekels of iron. And his armor bearer went before him.

℟ Præparáte corda vestra Dómino, et servíte illi soli:

℟ Prepare your hearts to the Lord, and serve him alone:

And he will deliver you from the hands of your enemies.

9 si quíverit pugnáre mecum et percússerit me, érimus vobis servi; si autem ego prævalúero et percússero eum, vos servi éritis et serviétis nobis.
10 Et aiébat Philisthǽus: Ego exprobrávi agmínibus Israël hódie: Date mihi virum, et íneat mecum singuláre certámen.
11 Audiens autem Saul et omnes Israëlítæ sermónes Philisthǽi huiuscémodi, stupébant et metuébant nimis.

8 And standing still, he cried out to the battle lines of Israel, and he said to them: 'Why have you arrived, prepared for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose one man from among you, and let him descend to do battle alone.
9 If he is able to fight with me and to strike me down, we will be your servants. But if I will prevail over him, and strike him down, you will be the servants, and you will serve us.'
10 And the Philistine was saying: 'I have reproached the troops of Israel today. Present a man to me, and let him undertake a fight against me alone.'
11 And Saul and all the Israelites, hearing these words of the Philistine in this manner, were stupefied and exceedingly afraid.

12 Now David was the son of an Ephrathite man, the one mentioned above, from Bethlehem of Judah, whose name was Jesse. He had eight sons, and during the days of Saul, he was an elderly man, and of great age among men.
13 Now his three eldest sons followed Saul into battle. And the names of his three sons, who went to the battle, were Eliab, the firstborn, and the second, Abinadab, and the third Shammah.
14 But David was the youngest. Therefore, when the three eldest had followed Saul,
15 David went away from Saul, and he returned, so that he might pasture the flock of his father at Bethlehem.
16 Truly, the Philistine advanced morning and evening, and he stood forth, for forty days.

Quadragínta dies, propter quátuor témpora et quátuor partes orbis terræ, vitam præséntem signíficant, in qua contra Góliath vel exércitum eius, id est, contra diábolum et ángelos eius, Christianórum pópulus pugnáre non désinit. Nec tamen víncere posset, nisi verus David Christus cum báculo, id est, cum crucis mystério descendísset. Ante advéntum enim Christi, fratres caríssimi, solútus erat diábolus; véniens Christus fecit de eo, quod in Evangélio dictum est: Nemo potest intráre in domum fortis et vasa eius dirípere, nisi prius alligáverit fortem. Venit ergo Christus et alligávit diábolum.

The sons of Israel stood against their adversaries for forty days. Forty days, on account of the four seasons and the four parts of the world, signify the present life, in which the people of Christians do not cease to fight against Goliath or his army, that is, against the devil and his angels. Yet they could not conquer, unless the true David Christ had come down with a staff, that is, with the mystery of the Cross. For before the coming of Christ, dearest brethren, the devil was unbound; Christ coming did with him what was said in the Gospel: No one can enter into the house of a strong man and plunder his vessels, unless he first bind the strong man. Christ therefore came and bound the devil.

See now, brethren, how foolish is that man whom a dog placed on a chain bites. Do not join yourself to it through the desires and lusts of the world, and it will not presume to approach you. It can bark, it can provoke; it cannot bite at all, except the willing. For it harms not by compelling, but by persuading; nor does it wring consent from us, but begs for it.

And in that, what was then prefigured was fulfilled in the Lord Jesus Christ. For the true David, Christ, came and carried his own cross to fight against the spiritual Goliath, that is, the devil. See, brethren, where David struck Goliath: on the forehead, surely, where he bore no sign of the cross. For just as the staff was a type of the cross, so also that stone by which he was struck prefigured Christ the Lord.

Ubi Dóminus multis impartívit varia génera sanitátum, nec témpore, nec loco pótuit ab stúdio sanándi turba cohibéri. Vesper incúbuit sequebántur: stagnum occúrrit, urgébant: et ídeo ascéndit in Petri navim. Hæc est illa navis, quæ adhuc secúndum Matthǽum flúctuat, secúndum Lucam replétur píscibus: ut et princípia Ecclésiæ fluctuántis, et posterióra exuberántis agnóscas. Pisces enim sunt, qui hanc enávigant vitam. Ibi adhuc discípulis Christus dormit, hic prǽcipit; dormit enim tépidis, perféctis vígilat.

Where the Lord imparted to many various kinds of healings, the crowd could be restrained neither by time nor by place from its eagerness to be healed. Evening fell upon them, they followed; the lake lay before them, they pressed on — and so he went up into the boat of Peter. This is the boat which, according to Matthew, is still tossed by the waves, and which, according to Luke, is filled with fishes: so that you may recognize both the beginnings of the Church tossed about and its later abundance overflowing. For the fishes are those who navigate this life. There Christ still sleeps among the disciples, here he commands; for he sleeps among the lukewarm, but watches over the perfect.

This ship is not troubled, in which prudence navigates, faithlessness is absent, and faith breathes. For how could it be troubled, when he who presided over it is the very foundation of the Church? There is disturbance, therefore, where faith is little; here there is security, where love is perfect. And if others are commanded to let down their nets, to Peter alone is it said: Launch out into the deep; that is, into the depth of disputations. For what is so deep as to see the height of riches, to know the Son of God, and to assume the profession of divine generation? Which, though the human mind cannot fully comprehend by investigation of reason, yet the fullness of faith embraces.
