1 Dixit autem Sámuel ad univérsum Israël: Ecce audívi vocem vestram iuxta ómnia quæ locúti estis ad me, et constítui super vos regem.
2 Et nunc rex gráditur ante vos: ego autem sénui, et incánui: porro fílii mei vobíscum sunt: ítaque conversátus coram vobis ab adolescéntia mea usque ad hanc diem, ecce præsto sum.
3 Loquímini de me coram Dómino, et coram christo eius, utrum bovem cuiúsquam túlerim, aut ásinum: si quémpiam calumniátus sum, si oppréssi áliquem, si de manu cuiúsquam munus accépi: et contémnam illud hódie, restituámque vobis.
4 Et dixérunt: Non es calumniátus nos, neque oppressísti, neque tulísti de manu alicúius quíppiam.
5 Dixítque ad eos: Testis est Dóminus advérsum vos, et testis Christus eius in die hac, quia non invenéritis in manu mea quíppiam. Et dixérunt: Testis.
1 Then Samuel said to all of Israel: 'Behold, I have listened to your voice, according to all that you have said to me, and I have appointed a king over you.
2 And now the king advances before you. But I am old and have gray hair. Moreover, my sons are with you. And so, having conversed before you from my youth, even until this day, behold, I am here.
3 Speak about me before the Lord, and before his Christ, as to whether I have taken anyone's ox or donkey, or whether I have falsely accused anyone, or whether I have oppressed anyone, or whether I have accepted a bribe from the hand of anyone, and I will repudiate the same, this day, and I will restore it to you.
4 And they said, 'You have not falsely accused us, nor oppressed us, nor have you taken anything from the hand of anyone.'
5 And he said to them, 'The Lord is a witness against you, and his Christ is a witness this day, that you have not found anything in my hand.' And they said, 'He is the witness.'

12 Vidéntes autem quod Naas rex filiórum Ammon venísset advérsum vos, dixístis mihi: Nequáquam, sed rex imperábit nobis: cum Dóminus Deus vester regnáret in vobis.
13 Nunc ergo præsto est rex vester, quem elegístis et petístis: ecce dedit vobis Dóminus regem.

10 But afterward, they cried out to the Lord, and they said: 'We have sinned, because we have forsaken the Lord, and we have served the Baals and Ashtaroth. Now therefore, rescue us from the hand of our enemies, and we will serve you.'
11 And the Lord sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and he rescued you from the hand of your enemies all around, and you lived in confidence.
12 Then, seeing that Nahash, the king of the sons of Ammon, had arrived against you, you said to me, 'By no means! Instead, a king shall reign over us,' even though the Lord your God was reigning over you.
13 Now therefore, your king is present, whom you chose and requested. Behold, the Lord has given you a king.
14 If you will fear the Lord, and serve him, and listen to his voice, and not provoke the mouth of the Lord, then both you, and the king who rules over you, will be following the Lord your God.

38:2 Dixi: Custódiam vias meas: * ut non delínquam in lingua mea.

38:12 Through the strength of your hand I have failed under your rebukes: * you have corrected man for iniquity.

At that time: The Jews, because it was the Preparation Day, so that the bodies would not remain on the Cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a great day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and they might be taken away. And so forth.

Ioánnes subdit: Unus mílitum láncea latus eius apéruit et contínuo exívit sanguis et aqua. O amor qui ómnia liquas! quómodo pro redemptióne nostra reliquísti dilectórem nostrum? Nam, ut úndique inundáret amóris dilúvium, super nos ruptæ sunt abýssi magnæ; scílicet, penetrália Cordis Iesu, quibus, ad íntima progrédiens, dira láncea non pepércit. Sanguis exívit et aqua. Sanguis in redemptiónem, sed étiam in ablutiónem aqua deflúxit; unde formáta est Ecclésia ex látere Christi, ut ætérne únicam atque diléctam a Christo se discat, et ut recognóscat quam displícuit culpa pro qua sanguis divínus ex hómine Deo vivo et mórtuo ita deflúxit. Non enim parva quantitáte constámus, si pro nobis sanguis divínus effúnditur.
John adds: One of the soldiers opened his side with a lance, and immediately blood and water came out. O love, who melt all things! How, for our redemption, have you forsaken our Beloved? For, that the flood of love might overflow upon us from every side, the great depths were broken open above us — namely, the innermost recesses of the Heart of Jesus, which, as the dreadful lance pressed forward to the depths within, it did not spare. Blood came out and water. Blood flowed for our redemption, and water likewise for our cleansing; whence the Church was formed from the side of Christ, that she might learn herself to be the one and beloved of Christ eternally, and might recognize how greatly displeasing was the fault for which divine blood thus flowed from the God-man, living and dead. For we are not of small worth, if divine blood is shed for us.

The water literally flowed not mixed indistinctly with the blood. For it could not have been comprehended by the unwise, had it flowed mixed with the blood. And perhaps all the blood flowed from that divine body as a sign of total love poured out, after which the watery fluid came forth. This was done by a deep mystery: that first there should go forth from that same body the redeeming price, and then the water in which the multitude of the redeemed people is signified. For there are many waters, many peoples; yet those who pertain to the Christian faith are one faithful people, so that they are not many waters but the one water which flowed from the side of Christ, as in the tenth chapter of the first letter to the Corinthians the Apostle says: We who all partake of the one bread and one chalice are one bread and one body. And again to the Ephesians, in the fourth chapter, he says: One God, one faith, one Baptism.
