3 Cumque surrexíssent dilúculo Azótii áltera die, ecce Dagon iacébat pronus in terra ante arcam Dómini; et tulérunt Dagon et restituérunt eum in locum suum.
4 Rursúmque mane die áltera consurgéntes invenérunt Dagon iacéntem super fáciem suam in terra coram arca Dómini; caput autem Dagon et duæ palmæ mánuum eius abscíssæ erant super limen;
5 porro Dagon solus truncus remánserat in loco suo.

1 Then the Philistines took the ark of God, and they transported it from the Stone of Assistance into Ashdod.
2 And the Philistines took the ark of God, and carried it into the temple of Dagon. And they stationed it beside Dagon.
3 And when the Ashdodites had risen up at first light on the next day, behold, Dagon was lying prone on the ground before the ark of the Lord. And they took Dagon, and they set him again in his place.
4 And again, on the next day, rising up in the morning, they found Dagon lying on his face upon the ground, before the ark of the Lord. But the head of Dagon, and both palms of his hands had been cut off upon the threshold.
5 Moreover, only the trunk of Dagon remained in its place.

6 Now the hand of the Lord weighed heavily upon the Ashdodites, and he destroyed them. And he struck Ashdod and its borders. And in the villages and fields, in the midst of that region, mice rose up and burst forth. And this caused a great tumult unto death in the city.
7 Then the men of Ashdod, seeing this kind of plague, said: 'The ark of the God of Israel shall not remain with us. For his hand is harsh, over us and over Dagon, our god.'
8 And sending, they gathered together all the princes of the Philistines to them, and they said, 'What shall we do about the ark of the God of Israel?' And the Gathites responded, 'Let the ark of the God of Israel be led around.'

9 And as they were carrying it around, the hand of the Lord fell upon every single city with an exceedingly great slaughter. And he struck down the men of each and every city, from the small even to the great. And the Gathites took counsel, and they made for themselves seat covers from pelts.
10 Therefore, they sent the ark of God into Ekron. And when the ark of God had arrived at Ekron, the Ekronites cried out, saying, 'They have brought the ark of the God of Israel to us, so that it may kill us and our people!'
11 And so they sent and gathered together all the princes of the Philistines, and they said: 'Release the ark of the God of Israel, and return it to its own place. And let it not kill us, with our people.'
12 For the fear of death fell upon every single city, and the hand of God was very heavy. Also, the men who did not die were being struck down. And the wailing of each city was ascending to heaven.

Christ mingles himself with each of the faithful through the mysteries, and those whom he has begotten, he nourishes through himself and entrusts to no other — through this persuading you again that he has assumed your flesh. Let us not, therefore, grow numb, we who are counted worthy of so great a charity and honor. Do you not see with what eagerness little ones seize the breast, and with what force they press their lips to the nipple? Let us approach this table and the breast of the spiritual cup with the same eagerness — or rather, let us draw from it with far greater fervor, as nursing infants draw the grace of the Spirit; and let there be for us but one sorrow: to be deprived of this nourishment. These things that are set before us are not the works of human power; he who then performed them at that Supper is the same who performs them now. We hold the place of ministers; but he who sanctifies them and transforms them is he himself. Therefore let no Judas be present, let no greedy man be present; for such persons are not received by this table. If anyone is a disciple, let him be present; for he says: "With my disciples I celebrate the Pasch." This is that table, and it lacks nothing. For it is not Christ who performs that one and a man who performs this one; but he himself performs this one as well.

No small punishment hangs over you, if, knowing someone to be guilty of that sin, you permit him to be a partaker of this table: his blood will be required at your hands. Whether someone be a military commander, or a prefect, or a prince crowned with a diadem, and yet approaches unworthily — forbid him: you have greater authority than he. For this purpose has God honored you with this distinction, that you should discern such things. This is your dignity, this your security, this your entire crown; not that you go about clothed in a white and shining tunic. But you also, O layman, when you see the priest offering, do not think that this is done by the priest alone, but by the hand of Christ invisibly extended.

This is the bread that came down from heaven. Manna signified this bread; the altar of God signified this bread. Those were Sacraments: in signs they differ, but in the reality signified they are equal. Hear the Apostle: For I would not have you ignorant, brethren, he says, that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized in Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food. Spiritual, and the same; for as for bodily food, it was different — they had manna, we have another: but spiritually the same, which we have, though our fathers had it before us — not the fathers of those to whom they were compared, but our fathers, not theirs. And he adds: And all drank the same spiritual drink. Different for them, different for us, but under a different visible form — signifying the same spiritual power. How the same drink? They drank, he says, from the spiritual rock that followed them: and the rock was Christ. Thence the bread, thence the drink. The rock is Christ in sign; the true Christ in word and in flesh. And how did they drink? The rock was struck with the rod twice: the double striking signifies the two beams of the Cross.

By spirit I mean that which is called the soul, by which you subsist as a human being; for you consist of soul and body. You have an invisible spirit, a visible body. Tell me, what of the two lives from the other? Does your spirit live from your body, or does your body live from your spirit? Everyone who lives answers: my body lives from my spirit. The way of contempt for death has been shown us, for us to follow: the pattern has been set before us, for us to be conformed to it.
