When he says, I will ask the Father, and he will give another Advocate to you, he shows that he himself is also an Advocate. For Advocate in Latin means intercessor: and it is said of Christ: We have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the just. And the reason he said the world cannot receive the Holy Spirit is the same as what is said: The wisdom of the flesh is an enemy of God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor can it be — as if we were to say: Injustice cannot be justice. For by the world in this place he means lovers of the world: and that love is not from the Father. And therefore the love of this world, which we strive to diminish and consume in us, is contrary to the love of God, which is poured forth in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

6 And truly, the Angels, who did not keep to their first place, but instead abandoned their own domiciles, he has reserved with perpetual chains under darkness, unto the great day of judgment.
7 And also Sodom and Gomorrah, and the adjoining cities, in similar ways, having given themselves over to fornication and to the pursuing of other flesh, were made an example, suffering the punishment of eternal fire.
8 Similarly also, these ones certainly defile the flesh, and they despise proper authority, and they blaspheme against majesty.
The world, therefore, cannot receive him, because it does not see him, nor does it know him. For worldly love does not have the invisible eyes by which the Holy Spirit can be seen, who cannot be seen except invisibly. But you, he says, will know him; because he will abide with you and will be in you. He will be in them so that he may remain; he will not remain simply in order to be: for it is prior to remain somewhere than to be there. But lest they should suppose that what was said — He will abide with you — was meant in the way a guest visibly abides with a man, he explained what he had said: He will abide with you, when he added and said, He will be in you.

You have also received the creed, a protection for the one about to give birth against the poisons of the serpent. When he says, I will ask the Father, and he will give another Advocate to you, he shows that he himself is also an Advocate. For Advocate in Latin means intercessor: and it is said of Christ: We have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the just. And the reason he said the world cannot receive the Holy Spirit is the same as what is said: The wisdom of the flesh is an enemy of God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor can it be — as if we were to say: Injustice cannot be justice. For by the world in this place he means lovers of the world: and that love is not from the Father. And therefore the love of this world, which we strive to diminish and consume in us, is contrary to the love of God, which is poured forth in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

But lest they should think that what was said, He will remain with you, was said in the manner in which a guest is accustomed to remain visibly with a man, he explained what he had said: He will remain with you, when he added and said, He will be in you.
