Now Christ, ascending whence he came,

It is my pleasure, dearest brethren, to pass briefly over the words of the Gospel reading, so that it may be permitted us to linger longer afterward in contemplation of so great a solemnity. For today the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples with a sudden sound, and transformed the hearts of those who were carnal into love of him; and as tongues of fire appeared outwardly, hearts were made to burn within — for when they received God in the vision of fire, they were sweetly enkindled through love. Now the Holy Spirit himself is love: hence John says, God is charity. Therefore, whoever desires God with an undivided mind already possesses him whom he loves. Nor could anyone love God, if he did not have him whom he loves.

But behold, if any one of you were asked whether he loves God: he would answer with full confidence and a secure mind, I love him. Yet at the very opening of the reading you have heard what the Truth says: If anyone loves me, he will keep my word. The proof of love, therefore, is the showing of works. Hence in his letter the same John says: He who says, I love God, and does not keep his commandments, is a liar. For we truly love God and keep his commandments, if we constrain ourselves from our pleasures. For he who is still dissolute through unlawful desires, assuredly does not love God: because he contradicts him in his own will.

And my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him. Consider, most beloved brothers, how great is this dignity: to have in the lodging of the heart the coming of God. Certainly, if some wealthy or very powerful friend were to enter our house, the whole house would be cleaned in all haste, lest there be anything that might offend the eyes of the entering friend. Let him therefore wipe away the stains of evil deeds, who prepares for God the dwelling of his mind. But see what Truth says: We will come, and make our dwelling with him. For into the hearts of some he comes, but does not make his dwelling: because, through compunction, they do receive a regard for God, but in time of temptation they forget the very thing for which they had been moved to compunction; and so they return to the perpetration of sins, as if they had in no way lamented them.
