Before he came to the river, when many were running to John to be baptized, he said to them: I indeed baptize you with water; but he who comes after me is greater than I, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to unfasten; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. He already knew this as well.

Some are holier than others, some are better than others. Why, then, if one is baptized by one man — say by that just and holy one — and another by another of lesser merit before God, of lesser standing, of lesser continence, of lesser life — that which they have received is nonetheless one and equal and the same, except that he is the one who baptizes?
