Hymnus
Iam lucis orto sídere,
Deum precémur súpplices,
Ut in diúrnis áctibus
Nos servet a nocéntibus.
Linguam refrénans témperet,
Ne litis horror ínsonet:
Visum fovéndo cóntegat,
Ne vanitátes háuriat.
Sint pura cordis íntima,
Absístat et vecórdia;
Carnis terat supérbiam
Potus cibíque párcitas.
Ut, cum dies abscésserit,
Noctémque sors redúxerit,
Mundi per abstinéntiam
Ipsi canámus glóriam.
Deo Patri sit glória,
Eiúsque soli Fílio,
Cum Spíritu Paráclito,
Nunc et per omne sǽculum.
Amen.
Now in the sun's new dawning ray,
Lowly of heart, our God we pray
That he from harm may keep us free
In all the deeds this day shall see.
May fear of him our tongues restrain,
Lest strife unguarded speech should stain:
His favouring care our guardian be,
Lest our eyes feed on vanity.
May every heart be pure from sin
And folly find no place therein:
Scant need of food, excess denied,
Wear down in us the body's pride.
That when the light of day is gone,
And night in course shall follow on.
We, free from cares the world affords,
May chant the praise that is our Lord's.
All laud to God the Father be,
All praise, Eternal Son, to thee:
All glory, as is ever meet,
To God the holy Paraclete.
Amen.
Psalmi
Ant. Ínnocens mánibus * et mundo corde ascéndet in montem Dómini.
Psalmus 23
23:1 Dómini est terra, et plenitúdo eius: * orbis terrárum, et univérsi qui hábitant in eo.
23:2 Quia ipse super mária fundávit eum: * et super flúmina præparávit eum.
23:3 Quis ascéndet in montem Dómini? * aut quis stabit in loco sancto eius?
23:4 Ínnocens mánibus et mundo corde, * qui non accépit in vano ánimam suam, nec iurávit in dolo próximo suo.
23:5 Hic accípiet benedictiónem a Dómino: * et misericórdiam a Deo, salutári suo.
23:6 Hæc est generátio quæréntium eum, * quæréntium fáciem Dei Iacob.
23:7 Attóllite portas, príncipes, vestras, et elevámini, portæ æternáles: * et introíbit Rex glóriæ.
23:8 Quis est iste Rex glóriæ? * Dóminus fortis et potens: Dóminus potens in prǽlio.
23:9 Attóllite portas, príncipes, vestras, et elevámini, portæ æternáles: * et introíbit Rex glóriæ.

23:1 The earth and all its fullness belong to the Lord: * the whole world and all that dwells in it.
23:2 For he has founded it upon the seas, * and he has prepared it upon the rivers.
23:3 Who will ascend to the mountain of the Lord? * And who will stand in his holy place?
23:4 The innocent of hands and the clean of heart, * who has not received his soul in vain, nor sworn deceitfully to his neighbor.
23:5 He will receive a blessing from the Lord, * and mercy from God, his Savior.
23:6 This is the generation that seeks him, * that seeks the face of the God of Jacob.
23:7 Lift up your gates, you princes, and be lifted up, eternal gates. * And the King of Glory shall enter.
23:8 Who is this King of Glory? * The Lord who is strong and powerful; the Lord powerful in battle.
23:9 Lift up your gates, you princes, and be lifted up, eternal gates. * And the King of Glory shall enter.
23:10 Who is this King of Glory? * The Lord of virtue. He himself is the King of Glory.

Amen.
Psalm 18(2-7b)
18:2 The heavens describe the glory of God, * and the firmament announces the work of his hands.
18:3 Day proclaims the word to day, * and night to night imparts knowledge.
18:4 There are no speeches or conversations, * where their voices are not being heard.
18:5 Their sound has gone forth through all the earth, * and their words to the ends of the world.
18:6a He has placed his tabernacle in the sun, * and he is like a bridegroom coming out of his bedroom.
18:6b He has exulted like a giant running along the way; * (7a) his departure is from the summit of heaven.
18:7b And his course reaches all the way to its summit. * Neither is there anyone who can hide himself from his heat.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

18:9 Iustítiæ Dómini rectæ, lætificántes corda: * præcéptum Dómini lúcidum, illúminans óculos.
18:10 Timor Dómini sanctus, pérmanens in sǽculum sǽculi: * iudícia Dómini vera, iustificáta in semetípsa.
18:11 Desiderabília super aurum et lápidem pretiósum multum: * et dulcióra super mel et favum.
18:12 Étenim servus tuus custódit ea, * in custodiéndis illis retribútio multa.
18:13 Delícta quis intéllegit? † ab occúltis meis munda me: * (14a) et ab aliénis parce servo tuo.
18:14b Si mei non fúerint domináti, tunc immaculátus ero: * et emundábor a delícto máximo.

18:8 The law of the Lord is immaculate, converting souls. * The testimony of the Lord is faithful, providing wisdom to little ones.
18:9 The justice of the Lord is right, rejoicing hearts. * The precepts of the Lord are brilliant, enlightening the eyes.
18:10 The fear of the Lord is holy, enduring for all generations. * The judgments of the Lord are true, justified in themselves:
18:11 desirable beyond gold and many precious stones, * and sweeter than honey and the honeycomb.
18:12 For, indeed, your servant keeps them, * and in keeping them, there are many rewards.
18:13 Who can understand transgression? † From my hidden faults, cleanse me, O Lord, * (14a) and from those of others, spare your servant.
18:14b If they will have no dominion over me, then I will be immaculate, * and I will be cleansed from the greatest transgression.
18:15a And the eloquence of my mouth will be so as to please, * along with the meditation of my heart, in your sight, forever,
18:15b O Lord, my helper * and my redeemer.

The Twentieth of October
Saint John of Cantius, Priest and Confessor, who fell asleep in the Lord on the twenty-fourth of December.
In the city of Aveia, near Aquila, in the Vestini, the heavenly birthday of blessed Maximus, Deacon and Martyr; who, out of desire for suffering, showed himself openly to the persecutors who were searching for him, and after standing firm in his reply, was suspended and tortured on the rack, then beaten with clubs, and at last thrown headlong from a height and killed.
At Agen, in Gaul, Saint Caprasius, Martyr, who, while he lay hidden in a cave to avoid the fury of the persecution, at last heard how the blessed Virgin Fides was contending for Christ and, encouraged by this to endure suffering, prayed to the Lord that, if he judged him worthy of the glory of martyrdom, the clearest water might flow from the rock of the cave; and when the Lord granted this, he went forth without fear to the arena of combat, and bravely fighting under the Emperor Maximian, merited the palm of martyrdom.
At Antioch, Saint Artemius, Dux Augustalis, who, having served with distinguished military honors under Constantine the Great, was ordered by Julian the Apostate—whom he had rebuked for his cruelty toward Christians—to be beaten with clubs, afflicted with other torments, and at last beheaded.
At Constantinople, Saint Andrew of Crete, Monk, who, for the veneration of holy images, under Constantine Copronymus, was beaten repeatedly and at last, with one foot cut off, gave up his spirit.
At Cologne, the passion of the holy Virgins Martha and Saula, with many others.
Near Nabantia, in Lusitania, Saint Irene, Virgin and Martyr; whose body was honorably buried in the town of Scalabis, which from that time retained the name of that Saint.
At Alsontia, in the territory of Rheims, Saint Sindulphus, Priest and Confessor.
Near Minden, in Germany, the Translation of Saint Felicianus, Bishop of Foligno and Martyr; a portion of his sacred relics, brought into Germany from the Umbrian city of Foligno, was deposited there. At Foligno he had once suffered on the twenty-fourth of January.
At Paris, likewise the Translation of the holy Martyrs George the Deacon and Aurelius, from the Spanish city of Córdoba, in which both had formerly completed their martyrdom on the twenty-seventh of July, together with three other companions.
