Hymnus

Iam lucis orto sídere,
Deum precémur súpplices,
Ut in diúrnis áctibus
Nos servet a nocéntibus.

Linguam refrénans témperet,
Ne litis horror ínsonet:
Visum fovéndo cóntegat,
Ne vanitátes háuriat.

Sint pura cordis íntima,
Absístat et vecórdia;
Carnis terat supérbiam
Potus cibíque párcitas.

Ut, cum dies abscésserit,
Noctémque sors redúxerit,
Mundi per abstinéntiam
Ipsi canámus glóriam.

Deo Patri sit glória,
Eiúsque soli Fílio,
Cum Spíritu Paráclito,
Nunc et per omne sǽculum.
Amen.

Now in the sun's new dawning ray,
Lowly of heart, our God we pray
That he from harm may keep us free
In all the deeds this day shall see.

May fear of him our tongues restrain,
Lest strife unguarded speech should stain:
His favouring care our guardian be,
Lest our eyes feed on vanity.

May every heart be pure from sin
And folly find no place therein:
Scant need of food, excess denied,
Wear down in us the body's pride.

That when the light of day is gone,
And night in course shall follow on.
We, free from cares the world affords,
May chant the praise that is our Lord's.

All laud to God the Father be,
All praise, Eternal Son, to thee:
All glory, as is ever meet,
To God the holy Paraclete.
Amen.

117:7 The Lord is my helper. * And I will look down upon my enemies.
117:8 It is good to trust in the Lord, * rather than to trust in man.
117:9 It is good to hope in the Lord, * rather than to hope in leaders.

118:22 Aufer a me oppróbrium, et contémptum: * quia testimónia tua exquisívi.
118:23 Étenim sedérunt príncipes, et advérsum me loquebántur: * servus autem tuus exercebátur in iustificatiónibus tuis.
118:24 Nam et testimónia tua meditátio mea est: * et consílium meum iustificatiónes tuæ.
118:25 (Daleth) Adhǽsit paviménto ánima mea: * vivífica me secúndum verbum tuum.

118:21 You have rebuked the arrogant. * Those who decline from your commandments are accursed.
118:22 Take me away from disgrace and contempt, * for I have sought your testimonies.
118:23 For even the leaders sat and spoke against me. * But your servant has been trained in your justifications.

At Rome, the heavenly birthday of the holy Martyrs Ptolemy and Lucius, under Marcus Antoninus. Of these, the former (as Justin Martyr writes), having converted an unchaste woman to the faith of Christ and taught her to practice chastity, was for this reason accused by her impure husband before the Prefect Urbicus, tormented for a long time in the filth of prison, and at last, when he bore witness by public confession to the teaching of Christ, was ordered to be led to death; Lucius also, when he condemned the sentence of Urbicus and freely confessed himself a Christian, received a similar sentence; and another third person was joined to them, who was likewise condemned to the same punishment.

At Antioch, the holy Martyrs Beronicus, Pelagia, Virgin, and forty-nine others.

In Egypt, Saint Uar, a soldier, who, under the Emperor Maximinus, while he was visiting and refreshing seven holy Monks held in prison, wished, when one of them died, to be substituted in his place; and so, enduring the most savage sufferings with them, he obtained the palm of martyrdom.
