Hymnus
Jam lucis orto sídere,
Deum precémur súpplices,
Ut in diúrnis áctibus
Nos servet a nocéntibus.
Linguam refrénans témperet,
Ne litis horror ínsonet:
Visum fovéndo cóntegat,
Ne vanitátes háuriat.
Sint pura cordis íntima,
Absístat et vecórdia;
Carnis terat supérbiam
Potus cibíque párcitas.
Ut, cum dies abscésserit,
Noctémque sors redúxerit,
Mundi per abstinéntiam
Ipsi canámus glóriam.
Deo Patri sit glória,
Ejúsque soli Fílio,
Cum Spíritu Paráclito,
Nunc et per omne sǽculum.
Amen.
Now that the sun has risen,
Let us humbly pray to God,
That in our daily actions
He may keep us from all harm.
May he hold back and bridle the tongue,
Lest the din of strife ring out:
May he guard the eyes with care,
Lest they drink in vanities.
Let the depths of the heart be pure,
And let folly be far away;
May sparing use of food and drink
Curb the pride of the flesh.
That when the day shall pass away
And fortune bring back the night,
Pure through abstinence,
We may ourselves sing his glory.
To God the Father be glory,
And to his only Son,
With the Spirit the Paraclete,
Now and through every age.
Amen.

107:10 Juda rex meus: * Moab lebes spei meæ.
107:10 In Idumǽam exténdam calceaméntum meum: * mihi alienígenæ amíci facti sunt.
107:11 Quis dedúcet me in civitátem munítam? * quis dedúcet me usque in Idumǽam?
107:12 Nonne tu, Deus, qui repulísti nos, * et non exíbis, Deus, in virtútibus nostris?

Ant. Exaltáre, Dómine, qui júdicas terram: redde retributiónem supérbis.
Ant. Be exalted, O Lord, * you who judge the earth: render retribution to the proud.
Psalm 93(1-11) [1]
93:1 The Lord is the God of retribution. * The God of retribution has acted freely.
93:2 Lift yourself up, for you judge the earth. * Repay the arrogant with retribution.
93:3 How long will sinners, O Lord, * how long will sinners glory?
93:4 How long will they utter and speak iniquity? * How long will all who work injustice speak out?
93:5 They have humiliated your people, O Lord, * and they have harassed your inheritance.
93:6 They have executed the widow and the new arrival, * and they have slaughtered the orphan.
93:7 And they have said, “The Lord will not see, * nor will the God of Jacob understand.”
93:8 Understand, you senseless ones among the people. * And be wise at last, you foolish ones.
93:9 He who formed the ear, will he not hear? * And he who forged the eye, does he not look closely?
93:10 He who chastises nations, will he not rebuke, * he who teaches man knowledge?
93:11 The Lord knows the thoughts of men: * that these are in vain.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
Psalm 93(12-23) [2]
93:12 Blessed is the man whom you will instruct, O Lord. * And you will teach him from your law.
93:13 So may you soothe him from the evil days, * until a pit may be dug for sinners.
93:14 For the Lord will not drive away his people, * and he will not abandon his inheritance,
93:15 even until the time when justice is being converted into judgment, * and when those who are close to justice are all those who are upright of heart.
93:16 Who will rise up with me against the malignant? * Or who will stand with me against the workers of iniquity?
93:17 Except that the Lord assisted me, * my soul almost would have dwelt in Hell.
93:18 If ever I said, “My foot is slipping,” * then your mercy, O Lord, assisted me.
93:19 According to the multitude of my sorrows in my heart, * your consolations have given joy to my soul.
93:20 Does the seat of iniquity adhere to you, * you who contrive hardship within a commandment?
93:21 They will hunt down the soul of the just, * and they will condemn innocent blood.
93:22 And the Lord has been made into a refuge for me, * and my God into the assistance of my hope.
93:23 And he will repay them their iniquity, and he will destroy them in their malice. * The Lord our God will utterly destroy them.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
Psalm 107 [3]
107:2 My heart is prepared, O God, my heart is prepared. * I will sing songs, and I will sing psalms in my glory.
107:3 Rise up, my glory. Rise up, Psalter and harp. * I will arise in early morning.
107:4 I will confess to you, O Lord, among the peoples. * And I will sing psalms to you among the nations.
107:5 For your mercy is great, beyond the heavens, * and your truth, even to the clouds.
107:6 Be exalted, O God, beyond the heavens, and your glory, beyond all the earth, * so that your beloved may be freed.
107:7 Save with your right hand, and heed me. * God has spoken in his holiness.
107:8 I will exult, and I will divide Shechem, * and I will divide by measure the steep valley of tabernacles.
107:9 Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine, * and Ephraim is the supporter of my head.
107:10 Judah is my king. * Moab is the cooking pot of my hope.
107:10 I will extend my shoe in Idumea; * the foreigners have become my friends.
107:11 Who will lead me into the fortified city? * Who will lead me, even into Idumea?
107:12 Will not you, O God, who had rejected us? * And will not you, O God, go out with our armies?
107:13 Grant us help from tribulation, * for vain is the help of man.
107:14 In God, we will act virtuously, * and he will bring our enemies to nothing.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
Ant. Be exalted, O Lord, you who judge the earth: render retribution to the proud.

The Eighteenth of October. The seventh day of the moon. In the year of our Lord 2026.
In Bithynia, the heavenly birthday of blessed Luke the Evangelist, who, having suffered much for the name of Christ, died full of the Holy Spirit. His bones were afterwards translated to Constantinople, and from there brought to Padua.
At Rome, likewise the heavenly birthday of Saint Paul of the Cross, Priest and Confessor; who was the Founder of the Congregation named from the Cross and Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ. Him, renowned for wondrous innocence and penance and inflamed with a singular charity toward Christ crucified, Pope Pius the Ninth enrolled in the register of the Saints, and appointed his feast to be celebrated on the twenty-eighth of April.
At Arenas, in Spain, likewise the heavenly birthday of Saint Peter of Alcantara, Priest of the Order of Friars Minor and Confessor; whom, on account of his admirable penance and many miracles, Pope Clement the Ninth, Supreme Pontiff, enrolled among the Saints. His feast, however, is celebrated on the following day.
At Antioch, Saint Asclepiades, Bishop, who was one of the number of those illustrious Martyrs who suffered gloriously under Macrinus.
At Neocaesarea, in Pontus, Saint Athenodorus, Bishop, who was the brother of Saint Gregory the Wonderworker; and, renowned for learning, completed his martyrdom in the persecution of Aurelian.
At Sinomovicum, in the territory of Beauvais, Saint Justus, Martyr, who while still a boy, in the persecution of the Emperor Diocletian, under the Governor Rictiovarus, was beheaded.
At Rome, Saint Tryphonia, who was once the wife of the Caesar Decius and the mother of the holy Virgin and Martyr Cyrilla; whose body was buried in a crypt beside Saint Hippolytus.
At Auriesville, in the State of New York, the holy Martyrs of the Society of Jesus, Isaac Jogues, Priest, and John de La Lande, temporal Coadjutor, who on this and the following day were cruelly slain by the Iroquois, at the same place where, a few years before, René Goupil, himself also a temporal Coadjutor, had obtained the palm of martyrdom.
On the borders of the region of Edessa, in Mesopotamia, a commemoration of Saint Julian the Hermit, surnamed Saba, who is also commemorated on the seventeenth of January.
℣ And elsewhere of many other holy Martyrs and Confessors, and holy Virgins.
℟ Thanks be to God.
℣ Precious in the sight of the Lord.
℟ The death of his Saints.
May holy Mary and all the Saints intercede for us to the Lord, that we may merit to be helped and saved by him, who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
