2 Et audívi loquéntem ad me,
3 et dicéntem: Fili hóminis, mitto ego te ad fílios Israël, ad gentes apostatríces quæ recessérunt a me; ipse et patres eórum prævaricáti sunt pactum meum usque ad diem hanc;
4 et fílii dura fácie et indomábili corde sunt, ad quos ego mitto te, et dices ad eos: Hæc dicit Dóminus Deus:
5 Si forte vel ipsi áudiant, et si forte quiéscant, quóniam domus exásperans est: et scient quia prophéta fúerit in médio eórum.

2 And after this was spoken to me, the Spirit entered into me, and he set me on my feet. And I heard him speaking to me,
3 and saying: 'Son of man, I am sending you to the sons of Israel, to an apostate nation, which has withdrawn from me. They and their fathers have betrayed my covenant, even to this day.'
4 And those to whom I am sending you are sons with a hard face and an unyielding heart. And you shall say to them: 'Thus says the Lord God.'
5 Perhaps it may be that they will hear, and perhaps they may be quieted. For they are a provoking house. And they shall know that there has been a prophet in their midst.

℟ Redémit pópulum suum et liberávit eum, et vénient et exsultábunt in monte Sion et gaudébunt de bonis Dómini super fruménto, vino et óleo,

℟ He has redeemed his people and freed them, and they shall come and rejoice on the mountain of Zion, and shall be glad in the good things of the Lord: in grain, wine and oil,

℟ Anguish is upon me on every side, and I know not what to choose;

It is better for me to fall into the hands of men, than to forsake the law of my God.

and they did not defile me, because before him no iniquity was found in me.

We must consider, most beloved brethren, and reflect again and again, that we have renounced the world, and are dwelling here meanwhile as strangers and sojourners. Let us embrace the day that assigns each one to his own dwelling, that snatches us hence and looses us from the snares of the world and restores us to paradise and the heavenly kingdom. Who, settled in a foreign land, would not hasten to return to his homeland? Who, eager to sail homeward, would not more ardently long for a favoring wind, so as swiftly to embrace those dear to him?

We reckon paradise as our homeland; we have already begun to count the Patriarchs as our parents: why do we not hasten and run, that we may see our homeland, that we may greet our parents? To come into their sight and embrace — how great a joy for them and for us alike! What pleasures in that heavenly kingdom, without fear of dying and with eternity of life! What supreme and unending happiness!

There is the glorious chorus of the Apostles, there is the exultant company of the Prophets, there is the innumerable people of the Martyrs, crowned for the victory of their struggle and Passion. There, triumphant Virgins, who subdued the concupiscence of the flesh and body by the strength of continence. The merciful are rewarded there, who by food and generous gifts to the poor performed works of justice, who, keeping the Lord's precepts, transferred their earthly patrimony to heavenly treasuries. Let us hasten to these, dearly beloved brethren, with eager desire, and let us wish to be with them soon, so that it may be our lot to come soon to Christ.

For many heretics, deceiving souls under the name of Christianity, suffer many such things; but they are therefore excluded from this reward, because it is not said simply: Blessed are those who suffer persecution, but it is added: For the sake of righteousness. But where there is no sound faith, there can be no righteousness; for the righteous man lives by faith. Nor should schismatics promise themselves anything from this reward; for likewise, where there is no charity, there can be no righteousness. For love of neighbor works no evil; which if they possessed, they would not tear apart the Body of Christ, which is the Church.

In illa plane sagéna, qua concludúntur et mali et boni pisces, non absúrde mali cathólici intelligúntur. Aliud est enim mare, quod magis mundum istum signíficat: áliud sagéna, quæ uníus fídei, vel uníus Ecclésiæ communiónem vidétur osténdere. Inter hæréticos et malos cathólicos hoc ínterest, quod hærétici falsa credunt: illi autem, vera credéntes, non vivunt ita ut credunt.

In that net, by which both bad and good fish are enclosed, the wicked Catholics are not unreasonably to be understood. For the sea is one thing, signifying more properly the world itself; the net is another, which appears to signify the communion of a single faith, or of a single Church. Between heretics and bad Catholics the difference is this: that heretics believe false things, while the latter, though believing what is true, do not live in accordance with what they believe.
