1 Numquid non sapiéntia clámitat, et prudéntia dat vocem suam?
2 In summis excelsísque vertícibus sémitis stans,
3 iuxta portas civitátis, in ipsis fóribus lóquitur, dicens:
4 O viri, ad vos clámito, et vox mea ad fílios hóminum;
5 intellégite, párvuli, astútiam, et, insipiéntes, animadvérte;
6 audíte, quóniam de rebus magnis locutúra sum, et aperiéntur lábia mea, ut recta prǽdicent.

1 Does not wisdom call out, and prudence bestow her voice?
2 At the summits and the tops of exalted places, standing above the ways, in the midst of the paths,
3 beside the gates of the city, at the very doors, she speaks, saying:
4 O men, to you I call out, and my voice is to the sons of men.
5 O little ones, understand discernment. And you who are unwise, turn your souls.
6 Listen, for I will speak about great things, and my lips will be opened, so as to foretell what is right.

℟ Dómine, Pater et Deus vitæ meæ, ne derelínquas me in cogitátu malígno: extolléntiam oculórum meórum ne déderis mihi, et desidérium malígnum avérte a me, Dómine; aufer a me concupiscéntiam,

℟ O Lord, Father and God of my life, do not abandon me to an evil thought; do not give me haughtiness of eyes, and turn away from me evil desire, O Lord; take from me concupiscence,

And do not deliver me over to a shameless and unruly soul, O Lord.

7 My throat shall practice truth, and my lips shall detest the impious.
8 All my words are just. There is no depravity in them, and no perversity.
9 They are upright to those who understand, and equitable to those who discover knowledge.
10 Accept my discipline, and not money. Choose the doctrine that is greater than gold.
11 For wisdom is better than all that is most precious, and everything that is desirable cannot compare to her.

℟ For your judgments are great, O Lord, and your words are beyond telling:

12 I, wisdom, dwell in counsel, and I am inside learned thoughts.
13 The fear of the Lord hates evil. I detest arrogance, and pride, and every wicked way, and a mouth with a double tongue.
14 Counsel is mine, and equity. Prudence is mine. Strength is mine.
15 Through me, kings reign and legislators decree just conditions.
16 Through me, princes rule and the powerful decree justice.
17 I love those who love me. And those who stand watch for me until morning shall discover me.

Quo somnio significabátur fore ut, splendore sanctitátis ac doctrinæ, gentes ad christianam pietátem inflammaréntur. Veritátem éxitus comprobávit; id enim et præstitit per se, et per sui ordinis socios deinceps est consecutus.

Dominic, born at Caleruega in Spain from the noble family of the Guzmans, devoted himself at Palencia to the liberal arts and theology; and when he had made great progress in that study, he became first a canon regular of the church of Osma, and afterward the founder of the Order of Friars Preachers. His mother, while pregnant, dreamed that she bore in her womb a dog carrying a torch in its mouth, which, when brought forth into the light, set the whole world on fire. By this dream it was signified that he would set nations alight with the splendor of his holiness and learning to kindle Christian piety. The event confirmed the truth of it; for he achieved this himself, and afterwards through his companions in the order.

His genius and virtue shone forth most of all in overthrowing the heretics who were striving to corrupt the people of Toulouse with pernicious errors; in this endeavor he spent seven years. Afterward he came to Rome to the Lateran Council with the Bishop of Toulouse, in order that the order he had founded might be confirmed by Innocent III. While this matter was under deliberation, Dominic, at the Pope's urging, returned to his own people to choose a rule for himself. Returning to Rome, he obtained from Honorius III, who had succeeded Innocent, confirmation of the Order of Preachers. At Rome he established two monasteries, one for men and one for women. He also raised three dead persons to life, and performed many other miracles, by which the Order of Preachers began to spread marvelously.

Quid est quod creátor ómnium Deus, cum surdum et mutum sanáre voluísset, in aures illíus suos dígitos misit, et éxspuens linguam eius tétigit? Quid per dígitos Redemptóris, nisi dona Sancti Spíritus designántur? Unde cum in álio loco eiecísset dæmónium, dixit: Si in dígito Dei eício dæmónia, profécto pervénit in vos regnum Dei. Qua de re per Evangelístam álium dixísse descríbitur: Si ego in Spíritu Dei eício dǽmones, ígitur pervénit in vos regnum Dei. Ex quo utróque loco collígitur, quia dígitus Spíritus vocátur. Dígitos ergo in aurículas míttere, est per dona Spíritus Sancti mentem surdi ad obediéndum aperíre.

What is it that God, the creator of all things, when he wished to heal the deaf and mute man, put his fingers into his ears and, spitting, touched his tongue? What is signified by the fingers of the Redeemer, if not the gifts of the Holy Spirit? Hence, when in another place he had cast out a demon, he said: If it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then certainly the kingdom of God has overtaken you. Concerning this, he is described in another Evangelist to have said: If I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then certainly the kingdom of God has overtaken you. From both passages taken together it is gathered that the Spirit is called the finger. To put fingers into the ears, therefore, is to open the mind of the deaf to obedience through the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Quid est vero, quod éxspuens linguam eius tétigit? Salíva nobis est ex ore Redemptóris, accépta sapiéntia in elóquio divíno. Salíva quippe ex cápite défluit in ore. Ea ergo sapiéntia, quæ ipse est, dum lingua nostra tángitur, mox ad prædicatiónis verba formátur. Qui suspíciens in cælum, ingémuit: non quod ipse necessárium gémitum habéret, qui dabat quod postulábat; sed nos ad eum gémere, qui cælo prǽsidet, dócuit: ut et aures nostræ per donum Spíritus Sancti aperíri, et lingua per salívam oris, id est, per sciéntiam divínæ locutiónis, solvi débeat ad verba prædicatiónis.

But what does it mean that, spitting, he touched his tongue? For us, the saliva is wisdom received from the mouth of the Redeemer in divine speech. For saliva flows from the head into the mouth. This wisdom, therefore, which is himself, when it touches our tongue, forthwith forms it for the words of preaching. Looking up to heaven, he groaned: not that he himself stood in need of groaning, who gave what was asked; but he taught us to groan toward him who presides over heaven, that both our ears might be opened through the gift of the Holy Spirit, and our tongue loosed through the saliva of his mouth — that is, through knowledge of the divine word — for the words of preaching.

Cui mox, Ephphétha, id est, Adaperíre dícitur: et statim apértæ sunt aures eius, et solútum est vínculum linguæ eius. Qua in re notándum est, quia propter clausas aures dictum est, Adaperíre. Sed cui aures cordis ad obediéndum apértæ fúerint, ex subsequénti procul dúbio étiam linguæ eius vínculum sólvitur; ut bona quæ ipse fécerit, étiam faciénda áliis loquátur. Ubi bene ádditur: Et loquebátur recte. Ille enim recte lóquitur, qui prius obediéndo fécerit quæ loquéndo ádmonet esse faciénda.

To him at once is said: Ephphatha, that is, Be opened — and immediately his ears were opened and the bond of his tongue was loosed. In this we must note that it was said, Be opened, on account of his closed ears. But to one whose ears of the heart are opened to obedience, the bond of his tongue is undoubtedly also loosed in what follows, so that he may speak to others the good things he himself has done. It is well added, therefore: And he spoke rightly. For he speaks rightly who has first done by obeying what he urges others to do by speaking.
