1 Peter, Apostle of Jesus Christ, to the newly-arrived elect of the dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
2 in accord with the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, with the obedience and the sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: May grace and peace be multiplied for you.
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy has regenerated us into a living hope, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead:
4 unto an incorruptible and undefiled and unfading inheritance, which is reserved for you in heaven.

6 In this, you should exult, if now, for a brief time, it is necessary to be made sorrowful by various trials,
7 so that the testing of your faith, which is much more precious than gold tested by fire, may be found in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
8 For though you have not seen him, you love him. In him also, though you do not see him, you now believe. And in believing, you shall exult with an inexpressible and glorious joy,
9 returning with the goal of your faith, the salvation of souls.

10 About this salvation, the prophets inquired and diligently searched, those who prophesied about the future grace in you,
11 inquiring as to what type of condition was signified to them by the Spirit of Christ, when foretelling those sufferings that are in Christ, as well as the subsequent glories.
12 To them, it was revealed that they were ministering, not for themselves, but for you those things which have now been announced to you through those who have preached the Gospel to you, through the Holy Spirit, who was sent down from heaven to the One upon whom the Angels desire to gaze.

The institution of today's solemnity received from our elders the name "Chair," because the first of the Apostles, Peter, is reported to have taken up the chair of the episcopate on this day. Rightly, therefore, do the churches celebrate the birthday of that seat which the Apostle received for the salvation of the churches, as the Lord said: You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church.

Blessed is God, who commanded the blessed Apostle Peter to be exalted in the Church: for it is fitting that this foundation be honored in the Church, through which the ascent to heaven is made.

That the birthday of the Chair is therefore celebrated today, the priestly office is honored. Since religious observance has rightly introduced this solemnity to the Churches, I wonder why among certain unbelievers today so pernicious an error has grown, that they place food and wine upon the tombs of the dead, as though souls that have departed from their bodies were in need of bodily food.

And upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Propter quod dicit beatíssimo Petro: Tibi dabo claves regni cælórum: Et quæcúmque ligáveris super terram, erunt ligáta et in cælis: et quæcúmque sólveris super terram, erunt solúta et in cælis. Transívit quidem étiam in álios Apóstolos vis potestátis istíus, et ad omnes Ecclésiæ príncipes decréti huius constitútio commeávit: sed non frustra uni commendátur, quod ómnibus intimátur. Petro enim ídeo hoc singuláriter créditur, quia cunctis Ecclésiæ rectóribus Petri forma præpónitur. Manet ergo Petri privilégium, ubicúmque ex ipsíus fertur æquitáte iudícium. The gates of hell shall not hold fast this confession, the bonds of death shall not bind it; for that voice is the voice of life. And just as it raises those who confess to the heavenly realms, so it plunges those who deny into the depths below. For this reason he says to the most blessed Peter: To you I will give the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound also in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed also in heaven. Indeed, the power of this authority passed also to the other Apostles, and the establishment of this decree spread to all rulers of the Church; but it is not without reason that it is entrusted to one man, even as it is made known to all. For it is entrusted to Peter individually because the form of Peter is set before all who govern the Church. Peter's privilege therefore endures wherever judgment is rendered according to his equity. Nor is there excess in either severity or leniency, where nothing shall be bound, nothing loosed, except what blessed Peter shall either loose or bind.
