1 Saulus autem adhuc spirans minárum et cædis in discípulos Dómini, accéssit ad príncipem sacerdótum,
2 et pétiit ab eo epístolas in Damáscum ad synagógas: ut si quos invenísset huius viæ viros ac mulíeres, vinctos perdúceret in Ierúsalem.
3 Et cum iter fáceret, cóntigit ut appropinquáret Damásco: et súbito circumfúlsit eum lux de cælo.
4 Et cadens in terram audívit vocem dicéntem sibi: Saule, Saule, quid me perséqueris?
5 Qui dixit: Quis es, dómine? Et ille: Ego sum Iesus, quem tu perséqueris: durum est tibi contra stímulum calcitráre.

1 Now Saul, still breathing threats and beatings against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest,
2 and he petitioned him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that, if he found any men or women belonging to this Way, he could lead them as prisoners to Jerusalem.
3 And as he made the journey, it happened that he was approaching Damascus. And suddenly, a light from heaven shone around him.
4 And falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?'
5 And he said, 'Who are you, Lord?' And he: 'I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goad.'

℟ For he who was working the Apostleship to the circumcised in Peter, was also working in me among the Gentiles:

8 Surréxit autem Saulus de terra, apertísque óculis nihil vidébat. Ad manus autem illum trahéntes, introduxérunt Damáscum.
9 Et erat ibi tribus diébus non videns, et non manducávit, neque bibit.

6 And he, trembling and astonished, said, 'Lord, what do you want me to do?'
7 And the Lord said to him, 'Rise up and go into the city, and there you will be told what you ought to do.' Now the men who were traveling with him stood there astonished, hearing indeed the voice, but seeing no one.
8 Then Saul rose up from the ground. And upon opening his eyes, he saw nothing. So leading him by the hand, they brought him into Damascus.
9 And in that place, he was without sight for three days, and he neither ate nor drank.

And therefore a crown of righteousness is laid up for me.

Today this reading from the Acts of the Apostles was proclaimed, in which the Apostle Paul, from a persecutor of Christians, was made a proclaimer of Christ. For Christ cast down the persecutor to make him a teacher of the Church: striking him and healing him; slaying and vivifying: a lamb slain by wolves, yet making lambs from wolves. For thus in a glorious prophecy, when the Patriarch Jacob was blessing his sons — touching those present, foreseeing those to come — what befell Paul had been foretold. Now Paul was, as he himself testifies, of the tribe of Benjamin. And when Jacob, blessing his sons, came to bless Benjamin, he said of him: Benjamin is a ravenous wolf.

Struck down by the voice of Christ from heaven, and receiving from on high the prohibition against further rage, he fell upon his face, first to be cast down, then to be raised up; first to be struck, then to be healed.

Perféctus ille est, qui ábiens vendit ómnia quæ habet, et dat paupéribus, ac véniens séquitur Christum; habébit enim thesáurum non deficiéntem in cælis. Unde bene, interrogánte Petro, dixit tálibus Iesus: Amen dico vobis, quod vos qui secúti estis me, in regeneratióne, cum séderit Fílius hóminis in sede maiestátis suæ, sedébitis et vos super sedes duódecim, iudicántes duódecim tribus Israël. In hac quippe vita pro eius nómine laborántes, in ália prǽmium speráre dócuit, id est, in regeneratióne; cum vidélicet in vitam immortálem fuérimus resurgéndo regeneráti, qui in vitam cadúcam mortáliter erámus géniti.

He is perfect who, going away, sells all that he has and gives it to the poor, and, coming, follows Christ; for he shall have a treasure that does not fail in the heavens. Hence it is that, when Peter asked, Jesus fittingly said to such men: Amen I say to you, that you who have followed me, in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of his majesty, you also shall sit upon twelve seats, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. In this present life, toiling for his name, he taught them to hope for a reward in another — that is, in the regeneration; namely, when we shall have been regenerated unto immortal life through the resurrection, we who were mortally born unto a passing life.

℟ Now the Lord God had planted a paradise of pleasure from the beginning:

In quo pósuit hóminem, quem formáverat.

In which he placed the man he had formed.

℣ And the Lord God brought forth from the ground every tree that was beautiful to the sight and pleasant to eat; the tree of life also in the midst of paradise.

And it is an altogether just recompense that those who here for Christ's sake despised the glory of human loftiness should there sit glorified as judges with Christ, uniquely beside him, who could by no means be torn from following in his footsteps. But let no one suppose that only the twelve Apostles — since Matthias was elected in place of the traitor Judas — will then be judges; just as neither are only the twelve tribes of Israel to be judged: otherwise the tribe of Levi, which is the thirteenth, will depart unjudged.

℟ Behold, Adam has become like one of us, knowing good and evil:

And will Paul, who is the thirteenth Apostle, be deprived of the lot of judging? when he himself says: Do you not know that we shall judge angels, how much more the things of this world? For it is to be known that all who, after the example of the Apostles, have left all things and followed Christ, will come as judges with him, just as also every mortal race is to be judged. For since the whole is often designated in the Scriptures by the number twelve, through the twelve thrones the totality of all who are to judge from among the Apostles is shown, and through the twelve tribes of Israel the totality of those who are to be judged.

℟ Ubi est Abel frater tuus? dixit Dóminus ad Cain. Néscio, Dómine, numquid custos fratris mei sum ego? Et dixit ad eum: Quid fecísti?

℟ Where is your brother Abel? said the Lord to Cain. I do not know, O Lord, am I my brother's keeper? And he said to him: What have you done?
