10 Et sústulit me in spíritu in montem magnum et altum, et osténdit mihi civitátem sanctam Ierúsalem descendéntem de cælo a Deo,
11 habéntem claritátem Dei: et lumen eius símile lápidi pretióso tamquam lápidi iáspidis, sicut crystállum.
9 And one of the seven Angels, those holding the bowls filled with the seven last afflictions, approached and spoke with me, saying: 'Come, and I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.'
10 And he took me up in spirit to a great and high mountain. And he showed me the Holy City Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
11 having the glory of God. And its light was like that of a precious stone, even like that of the jasper stone or like crystal.

15 And he who was speaking with me was holding a golden measuring reed, in order to measure the City, and its gates and wall.
℟ Angústiæ mihi sunt úndique, et quid éligam ignóro;
℟ Anguish is upon me on every side, and I know not what to choose;
Mélius est mihi incídere in manus hóminum, quam derelínquere legem Dei mei.
It is better for me to fall into the hands of men, than to forsake the law of my God.
℣ Si enim hoc égero, mors mihi est; si autem non égero, non effúgiam manus vestras.
℣ For if I do this, death awaits me; but if I do not do it, I shall not escape your hands.

16 And the city is laid out as a square, and so its length is as great as the width. And he measured the city with the golden reed for twelve thousand stadia, and its length and height and breadth were equal.
17 And he measured its wall as one hundred and forty-four cubits, the measure of a man, which is of an Angel.
18 And the structure of its wall was of jasper stone. Yet truly, the city itself was of pure gold, similar to pure glass.

℟ The Lord sent his Angel and shut the mouths of the lions,
Et non contaminavérunt, quia coram eo iniustítia invénta non est in me.
and they did not defile me, because before him no iniquity was found in me.
℣ Misit Deus misericórdiam suam et veritátem suam: ánimam meam erípuit de médio catulórum leónum.
℣ God sent his mercy and his truth: he rescued my soul from the midst of lion cubs.

The rites that the Roman Church observes in the consecration of churches and altars were first instituted by blessed Pope Sylvester. For although from the time of the Apostles there had already been places dedicated to God, which some called oratories and others churches, where assemblies were held on the first day of the week, and the Christian people were accustomed to pray, to hear the word of God, and to receive the Eucharist; these were not yet consecrated with so solemn a rite, nor had there yet been erected within them an altar raised as a title, which, anointed with chrism, would express the figure of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is our altar, our Victim, and our Priest.

But when the Emperor Constantine obtained health and salvation through the sacrament of Baptism, then for the first time, by a law promulgated by him, it was permitted throughout the whole world for Christians to build churches; and he encouraged them to this sacred building not only by edict but also by his own example. For he both dedicated a church to the Savior in his Lateran palace, and adjoined to it a basilica in the name of Saint John the Baptist, in that place where he himself, baptized by Saint Sylvester, was cleansed of the leprosy of unbelief; and the same Pontiff consecrated it on the fifth day before the Ides of November. The memory of this consecration is celebrated on this present day, on which for the first time at Rome a church was publicly consecrated, and the image of the Savior, depicted on the wall, appeared to the Roman people.

If, however, blessed Silvester afterward decreed in the consecration of the altar of the Prince of the Apostles that henceforth altars should be built only of stone, nonetheless the altar of the Lateran basilica was erected of wood. This is not surprising; for since from Saint Peter until Silvester, on account of the persecutions, the Pontiffs were unable to remain in a fixed place, wherever necessity had driven them, whether into crypts or cemeteries or the houses of the pious, they offered the sacred rites upon that wooden altar, hollow in the likeness of an ark. Saint Silvester, when peace was restored to the Church, placed that altar in honor of the Prince of the Apostles—who is said to have offered sacrifice upon it—and of the other Pontiffs who up to that time had used it for the celebration of the mysteries, in the Lateran as the first church, and decreed that henceforth no one but the Roman Pontiff should celebrate Mass upon it.
That same church, shattered and overturned by fires, ravagings, and earthquakes, and restored by the assiduous care of the Supreme Pontiffs, and then rebuilt with new construction, was solemnly consecrated by Pope Benedict XIII, of the Order of Preachers, on the twenty-eighth day of April of the year seventeen hundred and twenty-six, who appointed the celebration of its anniversary to be observed on this day. And as for what Pius IX had judged should be completed, Pope Leo XIII had the great nave, crumbling with age, extended and enlarged by a great reconstruction; had the old mosaic, already in many parts previously restored, restored to its ancient model and transferred to the new apse, adorned with magnificent workmanship and elegance; had the transept hall, with its coffered ceiling and floor renewed, polished; the sacristy, the canons' residence, and the permanent portico to the Constantinian Baptistery were added, in the year eighteen hundred and eighty-four.

When the leaders of the Church were acting too negligently, or when the Apostles received the sleep of death, the devil came and oversowed those whom the Lord interprets as wicked children. But the question is raised: are these heretics, or Catholics who live badly? For wicked children can also be said to be heretics, because, having been generated from the same seed of the Gospel and the name of Christ, they are turned by perverse opinions to false doctrines.

At illi, qui in eádem fide mali sunt, pálea pótius quam zizánia reputántur: quia pálea étiam fundaméntum ipsum habet cum fruménto, radicémque commúnem.
But what he says that they were sown in the midst of the wheat, seems to signify those who belong to the same communion. Nevertheless, since the Lord interpreted the field itself, not as the Church, but as this world: those are rightly understood to be heretics, because they are mingled with the good in this world not by the fellowship of one Church, or of one faith, but only by the fellowship of the Christian name. But those who in the same faith are evil, are considered rather as chaff than as tares: because chaff also has its root together with the grain and a common foundation.

In that net, by which both bad and good fish are enclosed, the wicked Catholics are not unreasonably to be understood. For the sea is one thing, signifying more properly the world itself; the net is another, which appears to signify the communion of a single faith, or of a single Church. Between heretics and bad Catholics the difference is this: that heretics believe false things, while the latter, though believing what is true, do not live in accordance with what they believe.
