2 And behold, a throne had been placed in heaven, and there was One sitting upon the throne.
3 And the One who was sitting there was similar in appearance to a stone of jasper and sardius. And there was an iridescence surrounding the throne, in aspect similar to an emerald.
4 And surrounding the throne were twenty-four smaller thrones. And upon the thrones, twenty-four elders were sitting, clothed entirely in white vestments, and on their heads were gold crowns.
5 And from the throne, lightnings and voices and thunders went forth. And there were seven burning lamps before the throne, which are the seven spirits of God.
6 And in view of the throne, there was something that seemed like a sea of glass, similar to crystal. And in the middle of the throne, and all around the throne, there were four living creatures, full of eyes in front and in back.
7 And the first living creature resembled a lion, and the second living creature resembled a calf, and the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature resembled a flying eagle.
8 And each of the four living creatures had upon them six wings, and all around and within they are full of eyes. And they took no rest, day or night, from saying: 'Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and who is, and who is to come.'

2 And I saw a strong Angel, proclaiming with a great voice: Who is worthy to open the book and to break its seals?
3 And no one was able, neither in heaven, nor on earth, nor under the earth, to open the book, nor to gaze upon it.
4 And I wept greatly because no one was found worthy to open the book, nor to see it.
5 And one of the elders said to me: Weep not. Behold, the lion from the tribe of Judah, the root of David, has prevailed to open the book and to break its seven seals.
6 And I saw, and behold, in the midst of the throne and the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, a Lamb was standing, as if it were slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God, sent forth to all the earth.
7 And he approached and received the book from the right hand of the One sitting upon the throne.
8 And when he had opened the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having stringed instruments, as well as golden bowls full of fragrances, which are the prayers of the saints.

11 And I saw, and I heard the voice of many Angels surrounding the throne and the living creatures and the elders, and their number was thousands of thousands,
12 saying with a great voice: The Lamb who was slain is worthy to receive power, and divinity, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing.

Today, most beloved, we celebrate the feast of all the Saints under the one joy of a single solemnity: of whose fellowship heaven exults, by whose patronage the earth rejoices, by whose triumphs the holy Church is crowned; whose confession is as much more glorious in honor as it was stronger in suffering: because, as the struggle grew, so too grew the glory of the combatants, and the triumph of martyrdom is adorned by a manifold variety of sufferings; and through the more grievous torments the rewards were also the more grievous: while the Catholic mother Church, spread far and wide throughout the whole world, was drawn in her very head, Christ Jesus, not to fear reproaches, crosses, and death; strengthened more and more, not by resisting but by enduring, she breathed into all whom the prison of punishment enclosed in its glorious company an equal and like fervor of virtue for waging the contest and the glory of triumph.

For the ineffable and immeasurable goodness of God also provided this: that he would not extend nor make long or eternal the time of labors and of struggle, but brief and, so to speak, momentary — so that in this brief and scanty life there would be contests and labors, but in that life which is eternal, crowns and rewards of merits; so that the labors would soon be ended, while the rewards of merits would endure without end; so that after the darkness of this world they would behold the most pure light, and receive a blessedness greater than all the bitterness of their sufferings — as the Apostle himself testifies, saying: "The sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory to come that will be revealed in us."

Unus tamen Deus per sanctos prophétas et fámulos suos, secúndum ordinatíssimam distributiónem témporum, dedit minóra præcépta pópulo, quem adhuc timóre alligári oportébat: et per Fílium suum maióra pópulo, quem caritáte iam liberári convénerat. Cum autem minóra minóribus, maióra maióribus dantur, ab eo dantur, qui solus novit congruéntem suis tempóribus géneri humáno exhibére medicínam.

If it is asked what the mountain signifies, it is well understood to signify the greater precepts of justice, because those given to the Jews were lesser. Yet one God, through his holy prophets and servants, according to the most orderly distribution of times, gave lesser precepts to the people who still needed to be bound by fear; and through his Son, greater precepts to the people who were now to be set free by charity. But when lesser things are given to lesser ones, and greater things to greater ones, they are given by him who alone knows how to offer to the human race the fitting remedy for their times.

Nor is it strange that greater commandments are given for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven, and lesser ones were given for the sake of the earthly kingdom, by the same one God who made heaven and earth. Concerning this justice, which is greater, it is said by the prophet: Your justice is like the mountains of God — and this is well signified by the fact that such great matters are taught on a mountain by the one Master, the only one suited to teach such things. He sits while he teaches, which pertains to the dignity of the office of a teacher. And his disciples draw near to him, that those who would draw close to his commandments in spirit might also be bodily closer to hearing his words. And opening his mouth, he taught them, saying. This circumlocution, in which it is written, And opening his mouth, perhaps commends by its deliberateness that the discourse is to be somewhat long. Unless perhaps it is not without significance that it is now said that he opened his mouth, whereas in the old law he was accustomed to open the mouths of the prophets.

What then does he say? Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. We read it written concerning the appetite for temporal things: All is vanity and presumption of spirit. Now presumption of spirit signifies boldness and pride. In common speech, moreover, the proud are said to have a great spirit, and rightly so, since spirit is also called wind. Hence it is written: Fire, hail, snow, ice, the spirit of storms. Who does not know that the proud are said to be puffed up, as though swollen by wind? Hence also that saying of the Apostle: Knowledge puffs up, but charity builds up. Wherefore those who are poor in spirit are rightly understood here as the humble and those who fear God, that is, those who do not have a spirit that puffs them up.
