O God, the lot, crown, and reward
of your soldiers:
as we sing the praises of the Martyr,
free us from the bond of sin.

For he, reckoning the joys of this world
and the enticing food of deception
as bitter gall,
arrived at the things of heaven.

He ran bravely through his punishments
and bore them manfully,
and, shedding his blood for you,
now possesses eternal gifts.

For this, with suppliant prayer
we entreat you, most merciful One;
in this triumph of the Martyr
forgive your servants their offenses.

Let enduring praise and glory

1 Invenítur autem in descriptiónibus Ieremíæ prophétæ, quod iussit eos ignem accípere qui transmigrábant, ut significátum est, et ut mandávit transmigrátis,
2 et dedit illis legem, ne oblivisceréntur præcépta Dómini, et ut non exerrárent méntibus, vidéntes simulácra áurea et argéntea, et ornaménta eórum;
3 et ália huiúsmodi dicens, hortabátur ne legem amovérent a corde suo.

1 Now it is found in the descriptions of the prophet Jeremiah that he ordered those who transmigrated to take the fire, just as it was signified and as he ordered, into the transmigration.
2 And he gave them the law, so that they would never forget the commandments of the Lord, and so that they would not go astray in their minds, seeing the idols of gold and silver, and their ornaments.
3 And in this manner, with other sayings, he exhorted them, lest they remove the law from their heart.

5 And arriving there, Jeremiah found a place in a cave. And he brought both the tabernacle, and the ark, and the altar of incense into that place, and he obstructed the opening.
6 And certain ones of those who followed him, approached to make note of the location, but they were not able to find it.

And so they try him by the terms of a proposed question: whether, namely, the paying of tribute to Caesar was permissible.

He who knows the hidden secrets of minds — for God does not fail to scrutinize any of the things hidden within a man — commanded a denarius to be brought to him, and asked whose image and inscription it bore. The Pharisees answered that it was Caesar's. To them he said that what belongs to Caesar must be rendered to Caesar; and that what belongs to God must be rendered to God. O answer full of wonder, and perfect resolution of a heavenly saying! So perfectly did he balance everything between contempt for the world and the dishonor of injuring Caesar, that he freed minds devoted to God from all earthly cares and duties, when he decreed that what was Caesar's should be rendered to Caesar.
