1 In the one hundred and fifty-first year, Demetrius, the son of Seleucus, departed from the city of Rome, and he went up with a few men to a maritime city, and he reigned there.
4 And so the army killed them. And Demetrius sat upon the throne of his kingdom.
5 And there came to him iniquitous and impious men from Israel. And Alcimus was their leader, who wanted to be made a priest.
6 And they accused the people to the king, saying: ‘Judas and his brothers have destroyed all your friends, and he has scattered us from our land.’
7 Now, therefore, send a man, whom you trust, and let him go and see all the destruction he has done to us and to the regions of the king. And let him punish all his friends and their helpers.

11 But they did not heed their words, for they saw that they arrived with a great army.

Hedwig, illustrious by royal birth but far more illustrious by the innocence of her life, the aunt of Saint Elizabeth daughter of the King of Hungary, daughter of Berthold and Agnes the Margraves of Moravia, showed from her earliest years a moderation of soul. For even as a small child she abstained from childish things, and being given in marriage at twelve years of age by her parents to Henry Duke of Poland, having faithfully kept the fidelity of the marriage bed, she reared the children born of that union in the fear of God. That she might be more free to devote herself to God, she persuaded her husband, by a mutual vow and unanimous consent, to separate from the marriage bed. After his death, inspired by God whom she had sought in constant prayer, she devoutly received the Cistercian habit in the monastery of Trebnitz; and there, intent on contemplation, attending the Divine Office and the solemn celebrations of Mass assiduously from sunrise until midday, she bravely despised the ancient enemy of the human race.

But worldly affairs, unless they touched on divine things or the salvation of souls, he could not bear to hear or to speak of. Moreover, he won a great triumph over himself through fastings and vigils and the roughness of his garments, harshly mortifying the flesh; thence flowering in the higher Christian virtues, in the gravity of his counsels, and in the candor and peace of his soul, he became an outstanding example of religious piety. Finally she became celebrated for the glory of miracles; for a boy who had been submerged and crushed and utterly mangled by the wheels of a mill she restored to life by her invocation, and she performed other deeds such that Clement IV, having duly verified them, enrolled her in the number of the Saints and granted that her feast be celebrated in Poland, where she is venerated with special honor as a patroness, on the fifteenth day of October. Innocent XI then extended this observance to the entire Church.

The reading of the holy Gospel, which you have just heard, brethren, does not require explanation; yet, lest we seem to have passed it over in silence, let us speak about it by way of exhortation rather than exposition. There is, however, one thing that I see must be asked about its exposition: why did the man who had come to seek healing for his son hear the words: Unless you see signs and wonders, you do not believe? For one who was seeking healing for his son was, without doubt, a believer; for he would not have sought healing from one whom he did not believe to be the Savior. Why then is it said: Unless you see signs and wonders, you do not believe — to one who had already believed before he saw any signs?

But remember what he asked; and you will clearly understand that he doubted in faith. For he asked that he would come down and heal his son. He therefore sought the bodily presence of the Lord, who was nowhere absent in spirit. He believed less in him, therefore, since he did not think he could grant salvation unless he were bodily present. For if he had believed perfectly, he would without doubt have known that there was no place where God was not.

From the greater part, therefore, he was lacking in faith, who attributed the power not to the majesty of God, but to his bodily presence. He sought health for his son, and yet he wavered in faith; for he believed that he who had come to him was powerful to heal, and yet thought that he was absent to his dying son. But the Lord, who is asked to go because he is not absent where he is invited, makes this known: by his word alone he restored health, he who by his will created all things.
