22 And it happened that, after these things, all the people came to Jerusalem after the victory, to adore the Lord. And as soon as they were purified, they all offered holocausts, and vows, and their promises.
23 Moreover, Judith offered all the implements of war from Holofernes, which the people gave to her, and the canopy that she had taken away from his chamber, as an anathema unto oblivion.

Thérèse of the Infant Jesus, born at Alençon in France of honest parents, conspicuous for their singular and unceasing devotion toward God, was from her earliest age drawn forward by the divine Spirit, and desired to lead a religious life. She earnestly promised that she would deny God nothing that he seemed to ask of her, and labored faithfully to keep this promise until death. In her fifth year, having lost her mother, she entrusted herself entirely to the providence of God under the watchful care of her most loving father and her elder sisters; under whose guidance, Thérèse rejoiced as a giant to run the way of perfection. At nine years of age she was handed over to be educated by the nuns of the Order of Saint Benedict at Lisieux, where she was seen to excel in the knowledge of divine things. At ten years of age, a hidden and grave illness long tormented her, from which, as she herself relates, she was miraculously delivered through the help of the most Blessed Virgin, who smiled upon her as she appeared to her, and whom she had been zealous to invoke through novenas under the title of Our Lady of Victory. Then, filled with angelic fervor, she took great care to prepare herself most diligently for the sacred banquet, at which Christ is received.

From the moment she was first refreshed by the Eucharistic bread, she seemed to draw upon an insatiable hunger for this heavenly food; hence, as if inspired, she asked Jesus to turn all worldly consolation into bitterness for her. Then, burning with the most tender love for Christ the Lord and for the Church, she had no greater desire than to enter the Order of the Discalced Carmelites, that by her self-denial and sacrifices she might bring aid to priests, missionaries, and the whole Church, and win countless souls for Jesus Christ — a thing she promised, near to death, that she would accomplish before God. On account of her youth, she met with many obstacles in making her way to the religious life;

In order to please the Most High the more, when she had read in Sacred Scripture that admonition: If any one is a little one, let him come to me, she wished to be little in spirit, and from there with filial trust she surrendered herself perpetually to God as to a most loving Father. This way of spiritual childhood, according to the teaching of the Gospel, she taught to others, especially to the novices whom out of obedience she undertook to form in the practice of the religious virtues, and thus, filled with apostolic zeal, she opened to the world—puffed up with pride and devoted to vanities—the way of evangelical simplicity. Her Spouse Jesus inflamed her with a desire for suffering, both in soul and in body. Moreover, observing that love for God was being neglected on every side, and affected with the greatest sorrow, two years before her death she offered herself as a victim to the love of God's mercy. Then, as she herself relates, she was wounded by the flame of heavenly fire; and consumed by charity, rapt in ecstasy, most fervently repeating: My God, I love you, she flew to her Spouse at twenty-four years of age, on the thirtieth day of September, in the year eighteen hundred and ninety-seven. And what she had promised as she was dying—that she would send down a perennial rain of roses upon the earth—this she has in truth fulfilled and continues to fulfill day by day through countless miracles, having been received into heaven. The whole discipline of Christian wisdom, dearly beloved, consists not in abundance of words, not in shrewdness of disputation, nor in the pursuit of praise and glory, but in true and voluntary humility, which the Lord Jesus Christ, from the womb of his Mother to the torment of the Cross, chose and taught as his every strength. For when his disciples were inquiring among themselves, as the Evangelist says, which of them was greater in the kingdom of heaven, he called to himself a little child, and set him in their midst, and said: Amen, I say to you, unless you change and become like little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whoever, therefore, shall humble himself like this little child, such a one shall be greater in the kingdom of heaven. Christ loves childhood, which he first embraced both in soul and in body. Christ loves childhood, the teacher of humility, the rule of innocence, the model of meekness. Christ loves childhood, to which he directs the ways of grown men, to which he recalls the aged; and he bends to his own example those whom he raises to his eternal kingdom.

But that we may be fully able to recognize in what manner so wonderful a conversion can be grasped, and with what change of ourselves we must return to the state of a child, let blessed Paul teach us and say: Do not be children in understanding, but in malice be as little ones. We must not therefore return to the toys of infancy and the imperfect beginnings of our first years, but something befitting even mature years must be taken from those beginnings: that the passing from disturbance may be swift, the return to peace quick; let there be no memory of offense, no desire for rank; love of common fellowship, natural equality. For it is a great good not to know how to harm and not to relish malice; because
