20 Behold, I will send my Angel, who will go before you, and preserve you on your journey, and lead you into the place that I have prepared.

22 But if you listen to his voice and do all that I say, I will be an enemy to your enemies, and I will afflict those who afflict you.

11 And those who stood among the myrtle trees answered the angel of the Lord, and they said, "We have walked through the earth, and behold, all the earth is inhabited and is at rest."

Usquequo tu non miseréberis Ierúsalem et úrbium Iuda, quibus irátus es?

Studióse considerémus, fratres, diligénter commendémus memóriæ hoc tam grande mandátum. Quis enim mandávit? cuius sunt Angeli? cuius mandátis obtémperant? cuius obédiunt voluntáti? Nempe Angelis suis mandávit de te, ut custódiant te in ómnibus viis tuis. Nec cunctántur quin étiam in mánibus tollant te. Summa ergo Maiéstas mandávit Angelis, et Angelis suis mandávit. Illis útique sublímibus, tam beátis quam próximis sibi cohæréntibus et vere domésticis mandávit de te. Tu quis es? Quid est homo, quod memor es eius? aut fílius hóminis, quóniam réputas eum? Quasi vero non sit homo putrédo, et fílius hóminis vermis! Sed quid putas mandávit de te? Ut custódiant te.

He has given his Angels charge over you. A wonderful condescension, and truly a great love of charity. Who then? to whom? concerning whom? what did he command? Let us carefully consider, brethren, let us diligently commit to memory this so great commandment. Who then gave the command? Whose are the Angels? Whose commands do they obey? Whose will do they follow? Surely it is he who has given his Angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. Nor do they delay even to bear you up in their hands. The Supreme Majesty therefore gave commandment to the Angels, and to his Angels gave commandment. To those sublime ones, both so blessed and so closely united to him and truly of his household, he gave charge over you. But who are you? What is man that you are mindful of him, or the son of man that you regard him? As if man were not corruption, and the son of man a worm! But what, do you think, did he command concerning you? To keep you.

℟ The Lord himself lives,

How great a reverence ought this word to bring you, what devotion to instill, what confidence to confer! Reverence on account of his presence, devotion on account of his goodwill, confidence on account of his protection. Walk carefully, that is to say — since the Angels, as they have been commanded, are present with you in all your ways. In whatever inn, in whatever corner, have reverence for your Angel. Do not dare in his presence what you would not dare in my sight. Do you doubt that he is present, whom you do not see? What if you were to hear him? What if you were to touch him? What if you were to smell him? See that the presence of things is established not by sight alone.

Let us therefore, brothers, love his Angels affectionately, as those who are to be our co-heirs one day, and who in the meantime are appointed and set over us by the Father as our stewards and guardians. What should we fear under such great protectors? Those who guard us in all our ways can neither be overcome, nor deceived, nor indeed can they deceive. They are faithful, they are prudent, they are mighty: why do we tremble? Let us only follow them, cling to them, and dwell under the protection of the God of heaven. As often, therefore, as the most grievous temptation is seen to press upon us and violent tribulation to threaten, invoke your guardian, your leader, your helper in times of need and tribulation; cry out to him and say: Lord, save us, we perish.

℟ In all their tribulation he was not troubled,

Nónnisi revérsos in natúram puerórum introíre regnum cælórum Dóminus docet: id est, per simplicitátem puerílem vítia córporum nostrórum animǽque revocánda. Púeros autem, credéntes omnes per audiéntiæ fidem nuncupávit. Hi enim patrem sequúntur, matrem amant, próximo velle malum nesciunt, curam opum négligunt; non insoléscunt, non odérunt, non mentiúntur, dictis credunt, et quod áudiunt, verum habent. Reverténdum ígitur est ad simplicitátem infántium; quia, in ea collocáti, spéciem humilitátis Domínicæ circumferémus.

The Lord teaches that only those who have returned to the nature of children enter the Kingdom of Heaven: that is, that the vices of our bodies and soul are to be recalled through childlike simplicity. Now he called all believers children by reason of the faith of obedience. For they follow the father, love the mother, know not how to wish evil to a neighbor, are negligent of the care of riches; they are not haughty, they do not hate, they do not lie, they believe what is said, and hold what they hear to be true. Ideo vere necésse esse ait veníre scándala; quia, ad sacraméntum reddéndæ nobis æternitátis, omnis in eo passiónis humílitas esset explénda.

Woe to this world because of scandals. The humility of the Passion is a scandal to the world. For in this above all human ignorance is held fast: that under the disfigurement of the Cross, it was unwilling to receive the Lord of eternal glory. And what is so perilous for the world as not to have received Christ? He says indeed that it is truly necessary for scandals to come; because, for the Sacrament of restoring eternity to us, all the humility of his Passion in him had to be fulfilled.

See that you do not despise one of these little ones who believe in me. He laid a most fitting bond of mutual love, especially on those who had truly believed in the Lord.
