O God, the lot, crown, and reward
of your soldiers:
as we sing the praises of the Martyr,
free us from the bond of sin.

For he, reckoning the joys of this world
and the enticing food of deception
as bitter gall,
arrived at the things of heaven.

He ran bravely through his punishments
and bore them manfully,
and, shedding his blood for you,
now possesses eternal gifts.

For this, with suppliant prayer
we entreat you, most merciful One;
in this triumph of the Martyr
forgive your servants their offenses.

Let enduring praise and glory

Idt 4:1-4

1 Fílii Israël, qui habitábant in terra Iuda, timuérunt valde a fácie Holoférnis;
2 tremor et horror invásit sensus eórum, ne hoc fáceret Ierúsalem et templo Dómini, quod fécerat céteris civitátibus et templis eárum.
3 Et misérunt in omnem Samaríam per circúitum usque Iéricho et præoccupavérunt omnes vértices móntium
4 et muris circumdedérunt vicos suos et congregavérunt fruménta in præparatiónem pugnæ.

1 Then, upon hearing these things, the sons of Israel, who dwelt in the land of Judah, were very afraid before his face.
2 Trembling and horror invaded their senses, lest he should do the same thing to Jerusalem and to the temple of the Lord that he had done to other cities and their temples.
3 And they sent into all of Samaria, and by an indirect route even to Jericho, and they seized in advance all the tops of the mountains.
4 And they surrounded their villages with walls, and they gathered together grain in preparation for the fight.

5 And then Eliachim the priest wrote to all who were opposite Esdrelon, which is opposite the face of the great plain near Dothain, and to all whom he would be able to reach through a passable way,
6 that they should hold the ascents of the mountains, through which there might be any passage able to reach Jerusalem, and that they should keep watch where the passage was narrow, wherever possible, between the mountains.
7 And the sons of Israel did just as Eliachim, the priest of the Lord, had appointed them.
8 And all the people cried out to the Lord with great urgency, and they humbled their souls with fastings, and prayers, both they and their wives.

℟ Tribulatiónes civitátum audívimus, quas passæ sunt, et defécimus: timor et hebetúdo mentis cécidit super nos et super líberos nostros: ipsi montes nolunt recípere fugam nostram:

℟ We have heard of the tribulations of cities, what they have suffered, and we have fainted: fear and numbness of mind fell upon us and upon our children: the very mountains will not receive our flight:

9 And the priests clothed themselves with haircloths, and they prostrated the little children opposite the face of the temple of the Lord, and they covered the altar of the Lord with haircloth.
10 And they cried out to the Lord God of Israel with one accord, lest their children should be given over as prey, and their wives into distribution, and their cities into extermination, and their holy things into defilement, and so that they might not become the disgrace of the Gentiles.
11 Then Eliachim, the high priest of the Lord, traveled all around Israel, and he was talking to them,
12 saying: Know that the Lord will heed your prayers, if you continue to persevere in fastings and prayers in the sight of the Lord.

Wenceslaus, duke of Bohemia, son of the Christian father Wratislaus and the pagan mother Drahomira, was piously raised by his grandmother Ludmilla, a most holy woman, and was distinguished by every kind of virtue; with the greatest zeal he preserved his virginity undefiled throughout his whole life. His mother, having secured the administration of the kingdom through the wicked murder of Ludmilla, and living impiously with her younger son Boleslaus, aroused against herself the indignation of the nobles; and so, weary of their impious rule, throwing off the yoke of both, they saluted Wenceslaus as king in the city of Prague. He governed his kingdom more by piety than by power, zealous and assiduous in relieving the needy and afflicted. With the deepest reverence he honored priests, sowing with his own hands the grain and pressing the wine to be used in the sacrifice of the Mass. But when the emperor had honored him with the royal insignia, he was killed by his impious brother, at the instigation of his mother, while praying in church. His blood sprinkled on the walls is still visible.

He governed his kingdom with devoutness rather than domination, and came to the aid of orphans, widows, and the needy with such charity that he sometimes carried wood on his own shoulders to those in want at night, was frequently present at the burial of the poor, freed captives, visited those detained in prison in the dead of night, and very often consoled them with money and counsel. As a gentle-spirited prince he grieved deeply when anyone, even if guilty, was condemned to death. Venerating priests with the highest devotion, he sowed wheat and pressed wine with his own hands for use at the sacrifice of the Mass. At night he would go about the churches barefoot over snow and ice, leaving behind him bloody footprints warming the ground.

He had Angels as guardians of his body. For when he was going to single combat against Radislav, Duke of Kourim, with the purpose of providing for the safety of his people, Angels were seen to provide him with arms and to say to the adversary: "Do not strike." The terrified enemy, prostrating himself in veneration, begged pardon. When he had gone into Germany, the emperor, beholding two Angels adorning him with a golden cross as he approached, leaped from his throne, embraced him in his arms, honored him with royal insignia, and gave him the arm of Saint Vitus. Nevertheless his impious brother, urged by his mother, received him at a banquet and afterward slew him in the church while he was praying and already aware of the death prepared for him, with the help of his accomplices in crime. The blood sprinkled on the walls is still to be seen; and by God's vengeance the unnatural mother was swallowed by the earth, and the murderers perished miserably in various ways.

And there arises a grave dissension within a single household, and those of the household shall be enemies to the new man; because he who has been divided from them by the word of God will rejoice to remain both interior and exterior, that is, both body and soul, in the newness of the spirit.

He proceeds, then, by the same course of precepts and understanding. For after he had commanded that all things most dear in the world must be left behind, he added: Whoever does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me; because those who belong to Christ have crucified the body with its vices and concupiscence. And unworthy of Christ is he who, not taking up his own cross — through which we suffer together, die together, are buried together, and rise together — may not be assured of the Lord, ready to live in the newness of spirit in this sacrament of faith.
