1 And so Arphaxad, king of the Medes, subjugated many nations under his authority, and he built a very powerful city, which he called Ecbatana.
2 From stones, cut and squared, he made its walls: seventy cubits in height and thirty cubits in breadth. And, in truth, he set its towers one hundred cubits in height.
3 In fact, at its corners, each side was extended for the space of twenty feet. And he set its gates according to the height of the towers.

9 and to all who were in Samaria and across the river Jordan, even to Jerusalem and to all the land of Jesse, until one passes through to the borders of Ethiopia.

Armed with these weapons she went forth and surrounded the whole army of the Assyrians. By the vigor of sober counsel she took off the head of Holofernes, preserved her chastity, and brought back victory.

And so she who had fasted continually for three days and washed her body with water found greater favor and obtained her revenge. Haman, however, while he was boasting at the royal banquet, paid the penalty for his own drunkenness amid the very wine. Fasting, therefore, is the sacrifice of reconciliation and the increase of virtue, which made even women stronger by the increase of grace. Fasting knows no usurer; it is unacquainted with the principal of interest; the table of those who fast breathes nothing of usury. Fasting even lends grace to banquets themselves: feasts become sweeter after hunger, which, through constant indulgence, become burdensome and grow cheap through prolonged repetition. Fasting is the seasoning of food: the keener the appetite, the more pleasant the fare.

Is this not he who bent the swirling eddies of the sea beneath Peter's feet, so as to provide solid service on the liquid road for human steps?
