1 Numquid non sapiéntia clámitat, et prudéntia dat vocem suam?
2 In summis excelsísque vertícibus sémitis stans,
3 iuxta portas civitátis, in ipsis fóribus lóquitur, dicens:
4 O viri, ad vos clámito, et vox mea ad fílios hóminum;
5 intellégite, párvuli, astútiam, et, insipiéntes, animadvérte;
6 audíte, quóniam de rebus magnis locutúra sum, et aperiéntur lábia mea, ut recta prǽdicent.

1 Does not wisdom call out, and prudence bestow her voice?
2 At the summits and the tops of exalted places, standing above the ways, in the midst of the paths,
3 beside the gates of the city, at the very doors, she speaks, saying:
4 O men, to you I call out, and my voice is to the sons of men.
5 O little ones, understand discernment. And you who are unwise, turn your souls.
6 Listen, for I will speak about great things, and my lips will be opened, so as to foretell what is right.

8 All my words are just. There is no depravity in them, and no perversity.

10 Accept my discipline, and not money. Choose the doctrine that is greater than gold.
11 For wisdom is better than all that is most precious, and everything that is desirable cannot compare to her.

℟ For your judgments are great, O Lord, and your words are beyond telling:

15 Through me, kings reign and legislators decree just conditions.

17 I love those who love me. And those who stand watch for me until morning shall discover me.

On the Nones of August therefore, at the time when the greatest heat is usual in the City, snow by night covered a part of the Esquiline hill. On that night the Mother of God separately warned both John and his wife in dreams to build a church on whatever spot they should find covered with snow, which was to be dedicated to the name of the Virgin Mary; for so it was her will to be appointed heir by them. John reported this to the Pontiff Liberius, who affirmed that the same thing had happened to him in a dream.

Therefore with solemn supplication of priests and people he came to the hill covered with snow, and designated upon it the site of a church, which was built with the money of John and his wife, and later restored by Sixtus III. It was first called by various names: the basilica of Liberius, Santa Maria ad Praesepe; but since there were already many churches in the City under the title of the holy Virgin Mary, so that the church that excelled the other basilicas of the same name by the novelty of its miracle and by its dignity might also be distinguished by the excellence of its title, it was called the church of Santa Maria Maggiore. The memory of its dedication is celebrated with an annual solemnity on account of the snow that miraculously fell on this day.

For the Lord is high, and looks upon the humble; but the proud, such as that Pharisee was, he knows from afar. God indeed knows the proud from afar, but does not pardon them. Hear further the humility of the publican. It is a small matter that he stood at a distance; he did not even lift his eyes toward heaven: he did not look up to be looked upon; he did not dare to look upward. Conscience weighed him down; hope lifted him up. Hear further: He was striking his breast. He was exacting a punishment from himself; and therefore the Lord was sparing toward him as he confessed. He was striking his breast, saying: Lord, be merciful to me, a sinner. Behold the one who prays. Why do you marvel, if God forgives, when he himself acknowledges?
