1 Fili mi, atténde ad sapiéntiam meam, et prudéntiæ meæ inclína aurem tuam,
2 ut custódias cogitatiónes, et disciplínam lábia tua consérvent. Ne atténdas falláciæ mulíeris;
3 favus enim distíllans lábia meretrícis, et nitídius óleo guttur eius;
4 novíssima autem illíus amára quasi absýnthium et acúta quasi gládius biceps;
5 pedes eius descéndunt in mortem, et ad ínferos gressus illíus pénetrant;
6 per sémitam vitæ non ámbulant, vagi sunt gressus eius et investigábiles.

1 My son, pay attention to my wisdom, and incline your ear to my prudence,
2 so that you may guard your thinking, and so that your lips may preserve discipline. Do not pay attention to the deceit of a woman.
3 For the lips of a loose woman are like a dripping honeycomb, and her voice is smoother than oil.
4 But in the end, she is as bitter as wormwood, and as sharp as a two-edged sword.
5 Her feet descend into death, and her steps reach even to Hell.
6 They do not walk along the path of life; her steps are wandering and untraceable.

12 Why have I detested discipline, and why has my heart not been quieted by correction?
13 And why have I not listened to the voice of those who guided me? And why has my ear not inclined to my teachers?

Good understanding to all who do it: his praise endures for ever and ever.

36:9 For those who are malicious will be exterminated: * but those who remain with the Lord, these will inherit the land.
36:10 Yet still a little while, and the sinner will not be: * and you will search his place and find nothing.
36:11 But the meek shall inherit the earth: * and they will delight in the multitude of peace.

Dominic, born at Caleruega in Spain from the noble family of the Guzmans, devoted himself at Palencia to the liberal arts and theology; and when he had made great progress in that study, he became first a canon regular of the church of Osma, and afterward the founder of the Order of Friars Preachers. His mother, while pregnant, dreamed that she bore in her womb a dog carrying a torch in its mouth, which, when brought forth into the light, set the whole world on fire. By this dream it was signified that he would set nations alight with the splendor of his holiness and learning to kindle Christian piety. The event confirmed the truth of it; for he achieved this himself, and afterwards through his companions in the order.

His genius and virtue shone forth most of all in overthrowing the heretics who were striving to corrupt the people of Toulouse with pernicious errors; in this endeavor he spent seven years. Afterward he came to Rome to the Lateran Council with the Bishop of Toulouse, in order that the order he had founded might be confirmed by Innocent III. While this matter was under deliberation, Dominic, at the Pope's urging, returned to his own people to choose a rule for himself. Returning to Rome, he obtained from Honorius III, who had succeeded Innocent, confirmation of the Order of Preachers. At Rome he established two monasteries, one for men and one for women. He also raised three dead persons to life, and performed many other miracles, by which the Order of Preachers began to spread marvelously.

I, he says, am alone in this; that one is among the rest. I am not, he says, such as this one is, by reason of my righteous deeds, through which I am not iniquitous.

I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. Ask what he prayed to God: you will find nothing in his words. It is not enough that he does not ask God, but that he praises himself; moreover he even taunts the one who is asking. But the publican stood far off, and yet he himself drew near to God: the awareness of his conscience held him back, while his devotion drew him forward. Parum est, quia de longínquo stabat: nec óculos suos ad cælum levábat: ut aspicerétur, non aspiciébat; respícere sursum non audébat: premébat consciéntia, spes sublevábat. Adhuc audi: Percutiébat pectus suum. Pœnas a se ipso exigébat; proptérea Dóminus confiténti parcébat. Percutiébat pectus suum, dicens: Dómine, propítius esto mihi peccatóri. Ecce qui rogat. Quid miráris, si Deus ignóscit, quando ipse agnóscit?

For the Lord is high, and looks upon the humble; but the proud, such as that Pharisee was, he knows from afar. God indeed knows the proud from afar, but does not pardon them. Hear further the humility of the publican. It is a small matter that he stood at a distance; he did not even lift his eyes toward heaven: he did not look up to be looked upon; he did not dare to look upward. Conscience weighed him down; hope lifted him up. Hear further: He was striking his breast. He was exacting a punishment from himself; and therefore the Lord was sparing toward him as he confessed. He was striking his breast, saying: Lord, be merciful to me, a sinner. Behold the one who prays. Why do you marvel, if God forgives, when he himself acknowledges?
