Non otiósa huius paralýtici, nec angústa medicína est, quando Dóminus et orásse præmíttitur; non útique propter suffrágium, sed propter exémplum. Imitándi enim spécimen dedit, non precándi ámbitum requisívit. Et conveniéntibus ex omni Galilǽa, et Iudǽa, et Ierúsalem, legis doctóribus, inter ceterórum remédia debílium, paralýtici istíus medicína descríbitur. Primum ómnium, quod ante díximus, unusquísque æger peténdæ precatóres salútis debet adhibére, per quos nostræ vitæ compágo resolúta, actuúmque nostrórum clauda vestígia, verbi cæléstis remédio reforméntur.
The healing of this paralytic is neither idle nor narrow, since the Lord is recorded as having first prayed — not, to be sure, to seek intercession, but to give an example. He offered a pattern to be imitated, not a supplication for his own need. And with the doctors of the law gathering from all Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem, amid the other cures of the infirm, the healing of this paralytic is described. First of all, as we have said before, every sick person ought to bring as intercessors for the health he seeks those through whom the loosened joints of our life and the halting steps of our actions may be reformed by the remedy of the heavenly word.

With their assistance, let him easily both raise himself up and prostrate himself before Jesus, and be found worthy to be seen by the Lord's gaze. For the Lord looks upon humility: because he looked upon the humility of his handmaiden. When he saw their faith, he said: Man, your sins are forgiven you. Great is the Lord, who forgives some by the merits of others: and while he tests some, he releases others from their faults. Why, O man, should a companion not avail before you, when a servant before God has both the merit of interceding and the right of obtaining?

Learn, you who judge, to forgive; learn, you who are sick, to obtain mercy. If you despair of pardon for serious sins, bring intercessors, bring the Church, which may pray for you, by whose consideration the Lord may forgive what he might otherwise refuse you. And although we ought not to omit the literal sense of the history, so that we believe the body of that paralytic was truly healed: yet acknowledge the healing of the interior man, to whom sins are forgiven. When the Jews assert that sins can be forgiven by God alone, they are at any rate confessing him to be God; and by their own judgment they betray their own faithlessness, who confirm the work in order to deny the person.
We praise you, O God: * we acknowledge you as Lord.
