Hymnus

Iam Christus astra ascénderat,
Revérsus unde vénerat,
Patris fruéndum múnere,
Sanctum datúrus Spíritum.

Solémnis urgébat dies,
Quo mýstico septémplici
Orbis volútus sépties,
Signat beáta témpora.

Cum lucis hora tértia
Repénte mundus íntonat,
Apóstolis orántibus
Deum veníre núntiat.

De Patris ergo lúmine
Decórus ignis almus est,
Qui fida Christi péctora
Calóre Verbi cómpleat.

Impléta gaudent víscera,
Affláta Sancto Spíritu,
Vocésque divérsas sonant,
Fantur Dei magnália.

Notíque cunctis Géntibus,
Græcis, Latínis, Bárbaris,
Simúlque demirántibus,
Linguis loquúntur ómnium.

Iudǽa tunc incrédula,
Vesána torvo spíritu,
Madére musto sóbrios
Christi fidéles íncrepat.

Sed éditis miráculis
Occúrrit, et docet Petrus,
Falsum profári pérfidos,
Ioéle teste cómprobans.

Deo Patri sit glória,
Et Fílio, qui a mórtuis
Surréxit, ac Paráclito,
In sæculórum sǽcula.
Amen.

Now Christ, ascending whence he came,
Had mounted o'er the starry frame,
The Holy Ghost on man below,
The Father's promise, to bestow.

The solemn time was drawing nigh,
Replete with heav'nly mystery,
On seven days' sevenfold circles borne,
That first and blessèd Whitsun-morn.

When the third hour shone all around,
There came a rushing mighty sound,
And told the Apostles, while in prayer,
That, as was promised, God was there.

Forth from the Father's light it came,
That beautiful and kindly flame:
To fill with fervour of his word
The spirits faithful to their Lord.

With joy the Apostles' breasts are fired,
By God the Holy Ghost inspired:
And straight, in diverse kinds of speech,
The wondrous works of God they preach.

To men of every race they speak,
Alike barbarian, Roman, Greek:
From the same lips, with awe and fear,
All men their native accents hear.

But Juda's sons, e'en faithless yet,
With mad infuriate rage beset,
To mock Christ's followers combine,
As drunken all with new-made wine.

When lo! with signs and mighty deeds,
Stands Peter in the midst, and pleads;
Confounding their malignant lie
By Joel's ancient prophecy.

To God the Father let us sing,
To God the Son, our risen King,
And equally let us adore
The Spirit, God forevermore.
Amen.

Psalmus 47

Psalm 47

47:9 Sicut audívimus, sic vídimus in civitáte Dómini virtútum, in civitáte Dei nostri: * Deus fundávit eam in ætérnum.
47:10 Suscépimus, Deus, misericórdiam tuam, * in médio templi tui.

47:2 The Lord is great and exceedingly praiseworthy * in the city of our God, on his holy mountain.
47:3 Mount Zion is being founded with the exultation of the whole earth, * on the north side, the city of the great King.
47:4 In her houses, God will be known: * since he will support her.
47:5 For behold, the kings of the earth have been gathered together: * they have convened as one.
47:6 Such did they see, and they were astonished; they were disturbed, they were moved: * trembling took hold of them.
47:7 In that place, their pains were that of a woman in labor: * with a vehement spirit, you will crush the ships of Tarshish.
47:9 As we have heard, so we have seen, in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God: * God has founded her in eternity.
47:10 We have received your mercy, O God, * in the midst of your temple.
47:11 According to your name, O God, so does your praise reach to the ends of the earth: * your right hand is full of justice.
47:12 Let mount Zion rejoice, and let the daughters of Judah exult: * because of your judgments, O Lord.
47:13 Encircle Zion and embrace her: * discourse in her towers.
47:14 Set your hearts on her virtue: * and distribute her houses, so that you may discourse of it in another generation.
47:15 For this is God, our God, in eternity and forever and ever: * he will rule us forever.

Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

67:3 Sicut déficit fumus, defíciant: * sicut fluit cera a fácie ignis, sic péreant peccatóres a fácie Dei.
67:4 Et iusti epuléntur, et exsúltent in conspéctu Dei: * et delecténtur in lætítia.

67:7b Qui edúcit vinctos in fortitúdine, * simíliter eos qui exásperant, qui hábitant in sepúlcris.
67:8 Deus, cum egrederéris in conspéctu pópuli tui, * cum pertransíres in desérto:
67:9 Terra mota est, étenim cæli distillavérunt a fácie Dei Sínai, * a fácie Dei Israël.
67:10 Plúviam voluntáriam segregábis, Deus, hereditáti tuæ: * et infirmáta est, tu vero perfecísti eam.
67:11 Animália tua habitábunt in ea: * parásti in dulcédine tua páuperi, Deus.
67:15 Dum discérnit cæléstis reges super eam, nive dealbabúntur in Selmon: * (16a) mons Dei, mons pinguis.
67:16b Mons coagulátus, mons pinguis: * (17a) ut quid suspicámini montes coagulátos?
67:17b Mons, in quo beneplácitum est Deo habitáre in eo: * étenim Dóminus habitábit in finem.
67:18 Currus Dei decem míllibus múltiplex, míllia lætántium: * Dóminus in eis in Sina in sancto.
67:19a Ascendísti in altum, cepísti captivitátem: * accepísti dona in homínibus.
67:19b Étenim non credéntes, * inhabitáre Dóminum Deum.
67:20 Benedíctus Dóminus die cotídie: * prósperum iter fáciet nobis Deus salutárium nostrórum.
67:21 Deus noster, Deus salvos faciéndi: * et Dómini Dómini éxitus mortis.
67:22 Verúmtamen Deus confrínget cápita inimicórum suórum: * vérticem capílli perambulántium in delíctis suis.
67:23 Dixit Dóminus: Ex Basan convértam, * convértam in profúndum maris:
67:26 Prævenérunt príncipes coniúncti psalléntibus: * in médio iuvenculárum tympanistriárum.
67:27 In ecclésiis benedícite Deo Dómino, * de fóntibus Israël.
67:28a Ibi Béniamin adolescéntulus: * in mentis excéssu.
67:30 A templo tuo in Ierúsalem, * tibi ófferent reges múnera.

67:2 May God rise up, and may his enemies be scattered, * and may those who hate him flee from before his face.
67:3 Just as smoke vanishes, so may they vanish: * just as wax flows away before the face of fire, so may sinners pass away before the face of God.
67:4 And so, let the just feast and let them exult in the sight of God: * and be delighted in gladness.
67:5a Sing to God, sing a psalm to his name: * make a path for him who ascends over the west: (bow) the Lord is his name.
67:5b Exult in his sight: * they will be troubled before his face, (6a) the father of orphans and the judge of widows.
67:6b God is in his holy place: * (7a) God who makes men dwell in a house under one custom:
67:7b He leads out those who are strongly bound, * likewise those who exasperate, who dwell in tombs.
67:8 O God, when you departed in the sight of your people, * when you passed through the desert:
67:9 the earth was moved, for the heavens rained down before the face of the God of Sinai, * before the face of the God of Israel.
67:10 You will set aside for your inheritance, O God, a willing rain: * and though it was weak, truly, you have made it perfect.
67:11 Your animals will dwell in it: * O God, in your sweetness, you have provided for the poor.
67:12 The Lord will give the word to those who proclaim the good news, * with great virtue.
67:13 The King of virtue is beloved among the beloved: * and the beauty of the house will divide the spoils.
67:14 If you take your rest in the midst of the clergy, you will be like a dove whose wings are covered with fine silver, * and the feathers of its back with the pallor of gold.
67:15 When heaven discerns kings to be over her, they will be whitened with the snows of Zalmon: * (16a) the mountain of God is a fat mountain.
67:16b A dense mountain, a fat mountain: * (17a) so then, why are you distrustful of dense mountains?
67:17b The mountain on which God is well pleased to dwell: * for even there, the Lord will dwell until the end.
67:18 The chariot of God is ten-thousandfold, thousands rejoicing: * the Lord is with them in Sinai, in the holy place.
67:19a You have ascended on high; you have taken captivity captive: * you have accepted gifts among men.
67:19b For even those who do not believe * dwell with the Lord God.
67:20 Blessed is the Lord, day after day: * the God of our salvation will make our journey prosper for us.
67:21 Our God is the God who will bring about our salvation: * and our Lord is the Lord who has brought an end to death.
67:22 So then, truly, God will break the heads of his enemies: * the hairy skull of those who wander around in their offenses.
67:23 The Lord said: I will turn them away from Bashan, * I will turn them into the depths of the sea:
67:24 so that your feet may be soaked in blood: * so that the tongue of your dogs may be soaked with the same, from the enemies.
67:25 O God, they have seen your arrival: * the arrival of my God, of my king who is in the holy place.
67:26 The leaders went ahead, united with the singers of psalms: * in the midst of young women playing on timbrels.
67:27 In the churches, bless the Lord God, * from the fountains of Israel.
67:28a There is Benjamin, a youth: * in ecstasy of mind.
67:28b The leaders of Judah, their governors: * the leaders of Zebulun, the leaders of Naphtali.
67:29 Command by your virtue, O God: * confirm in this place, O God, what you have wrought in us.
67:30 Before your temple in Jerusalem, * kings will offer gifts to you.
67:31a Rebuke the wild beasts of the reeds, the congregation of bulls with the cows of the peoples: * so that those who have been tested like silver may not be excluded.
67:31b Scatter the nations that desire wars: (32) ambassadors will come out of Egypt: * Ethiopia will offer in advance her hands to God.
67:33a O kingdoms of the earth, sing to God: * sing psalms to the Lord.
67:33b Sing psalms to God, (34a) who ascends to the heaven of the heavens, * toward the east.
67:34b Behold, he will utter his voice, the voice of virtue, (35) give glory to God beyond Israel, * his magnificence and his virtue is in the clouds.
67:36 God is wonderful in his saints; the God of Israel himself will give virtue and strength to his people: * blessed is God.

Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

103:1 You are clothed with praise and beauty: * wrapped in light as with a garment:
103:2 Stretching out heaven like a tent: * who covers its upper parts with waters.
103:3 Who makes the clouds your chariot: * who walks upon the wings of the winds.
103:4 Who makes your angels spirits: * and your ministers a burning fire.
103:5 Who has founded the earth upon its own stability: * it shall not be moved forever and ever.
103:6 The deep, like a garment, is its clothing: * the waters shall stand upon the mountains.
103:7 At your rebuke they shall flee: * at the voice of your thunder they shall be afraid.
103:8 The mountains go up, and the plains go down * to the place which you have founded for them.
103:9 You have set a boundary that they shall not pass over: * neither shall they return to cover the earth.
103:10 Who send forth springs in the valleys: * the waters shall pass through the midst of the hills.
103:11 All the beasts of the field shall drink: * the wild asses shall quench their thirst.
103:12 Above them the birds of heaven shall dwell: * from the midst of the rocks they shall give forth their voices.
103:13 Who water the mountains from your upper chambers: * the earth shall be satisfied with the fruit of your works:
103:14 Bringing forth grass for cattle, * and herb for the service of men:
103:14 That you may bring bread out of the earth: * and that wine may cheer the heart of man:
103:15 That he may make the face glad with oil: * and that bread may strengthen the heart of man.
103:16 The trees of the field shall be filled, and the cedars of Lebanon which he has planted: * there the sparrows shall nest.
103:17 The home of the heron is their chief place: * the high mountains are for the stags; the rock is a refuge for the hedgehogs.
103:19 He made the moon for seasons: * the sun knows its setting.
103:20 You have set the darkness, and it is night: * in it all the beasts of the forest shall pass through.
103:21 The young lions roaring after prey, * and seeking their food from God.
103:22 The sun has risen and they are gathered together: * and they shall lie down in their dens.
103:23 Man shall go forth to his work: * and to his labor until the evening.
103:24 How great are your works, O Lord! * You have made all things in wisdom: the earth is filled with your possession.
103:25 This great and spacious sea: * therein are creeping things without number.
103:26 Animals small with great: * there ships shall pass.
103:27 This dragon which you have formed to sport therein: * all things look to you to give them food in due season.
103:28 When you give to them, they shall gather: * when you open your hand, all things shall be filled with goodness.
103:29 But when you turn away your face, they shall be troubled: * you shall take away their spirit, and they shall fail, and shall return to their dust.
103:30 You shall send forth your spirit, and they shall be created: * and you shall renew the face of the earth.
103:31 May the glory of the Lord endure forever: * the Lord shall rejoice in his works:
103:32 Who looks upon the earth, and makes it tremble: * who touches the mountains, and they smoke.
103:33 I will sing to the Lord all my life: * I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.
103:34 May my speech be pleasing to him: * but I will take delight in the Lord.
103:35 Let sinners fail from the earth, and the wicked, so that they are no more: * bless the Lord, O my soul.

Amen.

Ant. Emítte Spíritum tuum, et creabúntur: et renovábis fáciem terræ, allelúia, allelúia.

Ant. Send forth your Spirit, and they shall be created: and you shall renew the face of the earth, alleluia, alleluia.

Non amóvit Dóminus oratiónem meam.

The Lord has not taken away my prayer.

Et misericórdiam suam a me.

Nor his mercy from me.

Pater noster, qui es in cælis, sanctificétur nomen tuum: advéniat regnum tuum: fiat volúntas tua, sicut in cælo et in terra. Panem nostrum cotidiánum da nobis hódie: et dimítte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name: thy kingdom come: thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses, as we also forgive those who trespass against us:

Et ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem:

And lead us not into temptation:

Sed líbera nos a malo.

But deliver us from evil.

Absolutio.

Absolutio. Hear us, Lord Jesus Christ, and have mercy on your servants: You who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Benedictióne perpétua benedícat nos Pater ætérnus.

Benedictio. May the eternal Father bless us with his everlasting blessing.

A Homily of Saint Ambrose the Bishop

Liber 6 in cap. 9 Lucæ

Liber 6 in cap.

What manner of person he ought to be who proclaims the Kingdom of God is set forth by the precepts of the Gospel: that without a staff, without a bag, without sandals, without bread, without money — that is, seeking no supports of worldly provision — and secure in faith, he should believe that precisely because he seeks these things less, they can be the more abundantly supplied. Those who wish may bring this passage to bear on that reading, so that this place may seem to form only the spiritual disposition: one who has, as it were, put off a certain garment of the body, having rejected not only power and despised riches, but having also renounced the allurements of the flesh itself. To these men is given, first of all, a general command of peace and constancy: to bring peace, to maintain constancy, to observe the duties of hospitable fellowship — declaring it foreign to a preacher of the heavenly Kingdom to run about from house to house and to exchange the laws of inviolable hospitality.

Divine fire came, not burning but illumining, not consuming but shining: and it found the hearts of the disciples to be pure vessels:

Et tríbuit eis charísmatum dona, allelúia, allelúia.

And bestowed upon them the gifts of charisms, alleluia, alleluia.

Invénit eos concórdes caritáte, et collustrávit eos inúndans grátia Deitátis.

It found them united in charity, and the flooding grace of the Godhead enlightened them.

Et tríbuit eis charísmatum dona, allelúia, allelúia.

And bestowed upon them the gifts of charisms, alleluia, alleluia.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Unigénitus Dei Fílius nos benedícere et adiuváre dignétur.

Benedictio. May the Only Begotten Son of God be pleased to bless and assist us.

But just as the grace of hospitality is judged to be owed: so also, if they are not received, there is commanded the shaking of the dust and the going out of the city. By which no small recompense for the good of hospitality is taught: so that we not only bestow peace upon guests, but also, if any stains of earthly lightness overshadow them, these may be taken away when they have received the footprints of apostolic preaching. Nor is it without purpose that, according to Matthew, the house which the Apostles are to enter is to be chosen: lest there be occasion for changing lodging and violating the bond of friendship. Nevertheless the same caution is not enjoined upon the receiver of the guest: lest, while the guest is being chosen, hospitality itself be diminished.

Spíritus Sanctus replévit totam domum, ubi erant Apóstoli: et apparuérunt illis dispertítæ linguæ, tamquam ignis, sedítque supra síngulos eórum:

The Holy Spirit filled the whole house where the Apostles were: and there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and it sat upon each one of them:

Et repléti sunt omnes Spíritu Sancto, et cœpérunt loqui váriis linguis, prout Spíritus Sanctus dabat éloqui illis, allelúia, allelúia, allelúia.

And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak in various tongues, as the Holy Spirit gave them utterance, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Dum ergo essent in unum discípuli congregáti propter metum Iudæórum, sonus repénte de cælo venit super eos.

When the disciples were gathered together in one place for fear of the Jews, a sound suddenly came from heaven upon them.

And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak in various tongues, as the Holy Spirit gave them utterance, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Ad gáudia paradísi perdúcat nos misericórdia Christi.

Benedictio. May the mercy of Christ lead us to the joys of paradise.

Patrem * imménsæ maiestátis;
Venerándum tuum verum * et únicum Fílium;

But this, while it is venerable as a form of precept concerning the practice of hospitality according to the letter: so also does a heavenly sentence smile upon it in its mystery. For when a house is chosen, a worthy guest is sought. Let us consider, therefore, lest perchance the Church be signified as to be preferred, and Christ. For what house is more worthy of the entry of apostolic preaching than the holy Church? Or who is seen to be more to be preferred above all than Christ, who was accustomed to wash the feet of his guests: and whosoever he has received into his house, he does not suffer them to walk with defiled steps; but though they be stained from their former life, he nevertheless graciously cleanses their subsequent course? He therefore is the only one whom no one ought to forsake, no one to exchange. To whom it is well said: Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we believe.
We praise you, O God: * we acknowledge you as Lord.
We worship you, the eternal Father: * all the earth reveres you.
To you all Angels, * to you the Heavens, and all the Powers:
To you the Cherubim and Seraphim * cry out without ceasing:
(A bow is made) Holy, Holy, Holy * Lord God of Hosts.
Heaven and earth are full * of the majesty of your glory.
The glorious * choir of Apostles,
The admirable * company of Prophets,
The white-robed * army of Martyrs praises you.
Throughout the world * the holy Church confesses you,
the Father * of immeasurable majesty;
Your true and only * Son, worthy of worship;
And the Holy * Spirit, the Paraclete.
You are the King of glory, * O Christ.
You are the eternal * Son of the Father.
(A bow is made) You, who were to take upon yourself our human nature for our liberation: * did not shrink from the Virgin's womb.
You, who were to take upon yourself our human nature for our liberation: * did not shrink from the Virgin's womb.
You, having overcome the sting of death, * opened the kingdom of heaven to believers.
You sit at the right hand of God, * in the glory of the Father.
You are believed * to be the Judge who is to come.

(Sequens versus dicitur flexis genibus)

(The following verse is said kneeling)

(Brethren, when they begin 'Te ergo quaesumus,' departing from the Stalls, let them reverently bow at the words 'Quos pretioso' and the rest)

Te ergo quǽsumus, tuis fámulis súbveni, * quos pretióso sánguine redemísti.
Ætérna fac cum Sanctis tuis * in glória numerári.
Ætérna fac cum Sanctis tuis * in glória munerári.
Salvum fac pópulum tuum, Dómine, * et bénedic hereditáti tuæ.
Et rege eos, * et extólle illos usque in ætérnum.
Per síngulos dies * benedícimus te.
(Fit reverentia, secundum consuetudinem) Et laudámus nomen tuum in sǽculum, * et in sǽculum sǽculi.
Et laudámus nomen tuum in sǽculum, * et in sǽculum sǽculi.
Dignáre, Dómine, die isto * sine peccáto nos custodíre.
Miserére nostri, Dómine, * miserére nostri.
Fiat misericórdia tua, Dómine, super nos, * quemádmodum sperávimus in te.
In te, Dómine, sperávi: * non confúndar in ætérnum.

We beseech you, therefore, come to the aid of your servants, * whom you have redeemed with your precious blood.
Number them among your Saints * in eternal glory.
Number them among your Saints * to receive reward in eternal glory.
Save your people, O Lord, * and bless your inheritance.
And rule them, * and lift them up for ever.
Day by day * we bless you.
(A bow is made, according to custom) And we praise your name for ever, * and for ever and ever.
And we praise your name for ever, * and for ever and ever.
Graciously keep us, O Lord, this day * without sin.
Have mercy on us, O Lord, * have mercy on us.
Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, * as we have hoped in you.
In you, O Lord, I have hoped: * let me not be confounded for ever.
