3 sollíciti serváre unitátem Spíritus in vínculo pacis.

9 Now that he has ascended, what is left except for him also to descended, first to the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is the same one who also ascended above all the heavens, so that he might fulfill everything. 11 And the same one granted that some would be Apostles, and some Prophets, yet truly others evangelists, and others pastors and teachers, 12 for the sake of the perfection of the saints, by the work of the ministry, in the edification of the body of Christ, 13 until we all meet in the unity of faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, as a perfect man, in the measure of the age of the fullness of Christ. 14 So may we then no longer be little children, disturbed and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the wickedness of men, and by the craftiness which deceives unto error.

15 Instead, acting according to truth in charity, we should increase in everything, in him who is the head, Christ himself: 16 For in him, the whole body is joined closely together, by every underlying joint, through the function allotted to each part, bringing improvement to the body, toward its edification in charity. 17 And so, I say this, and I testify in the Lord: that from now on you should walk, not as the Gentiles also walk, in the vanity of their mind, 18 having their intellect obscured, being alienated from the life of God, through the ignorance that is within them, because of the blindness of their hearts. 19 Such as these, despairing, have given themselves over to sexual immorality, carrying out every impurity with rapacity. 20 But this is not what you have learned in Christ. 21 For certainly, you have listened to him, and you have been instructed in him, according to the truth that is in Jesus:

Omnia, caríssimi, quæ Dóminus Iesus Christus in hoc mundo sub fragilitáte nostra mirácula édidit, nobis profíciunt: qui dum humánam conditiónem sidéribus importávit, credéntibus cælum patére posse monstrávit: et dum victórem mortis in cæléstia elevávit, victóribus quo sequántur osténdit. Ascénsio ergo Dómini cathólicæ fídei confirmátio fuit: ut secúri in pósterum crederémus miráculi illíus donum, cuius iam in præsénti percepissémus efféctum: et fidélis quisque cum iam tanta percéperit, per ea, quæ cognóscit prǽstita, discat speráre promíssa, ac Dei sui prætéritam præsentémque bonitátem, quasi futurórum téneat cautiónem.

All the miracles, dearest ones, that the Lord Jesus Christ performed in this world under the frailty of our condition profit us: for in bringing the human condition to the stars, he showed that heaven could be opened to believers; and in raising the conqueror of death to the heavenly realm, he pointed out to conquerors the way they should follow. The Ascension of the Lord was therefore a confirmation of the Catholic faith: so that we might believe with assurance from that time forward in the gift of that miracle whose effect we had already received in the present; and that every believer, having received such great gifts, might learn through what he knows has been granted to hope for what has been promised, and might hold his God's past and present goodness as a kind of pledge of things to come.

In one and the same Person, recognize the divine power in him who lifts up, and the human substance in him who is lifted.

And therefore the poisons of the Eastern error are to be detested in every way: that error which, with impious novelty, presumes to assert that the Son of God and the Son of man are of one nature. For in either case, he who should say he was merely man would deny the glory of the Creator; or he who should say he was merely God would deny the mercy of the Redeemer. By which reasoning an Arian cannot easily hold the evangelical truth, in which we read the Son of God to be now equal, now lesser. For he who should believe by a deadly persuasion that our Savior was of one nature would be forced to say that the one crucified was either God alone, or man alone. But this is not so. For death neither could God alone feel, nor could man alone overcome.

For as long as the Lord was ascending to the heavens, his holy Church feared the adversities of the world in every way; but after she was strengthened by his Ascension, she openly preached what she had believed in secret. Do you wish, dearest brethren, to recognize those leaps of his? From heaven he came into the womb, from the womb he came into the manger, from the manger he came to the Cross, from the Cross he came to the tomb, from the tomb he returned to heaven. Behold, so that he might make us run after him, the Truth made manifest through the flesh made certain leaps on our behalf: for he rejoiced as a giant to run his course, that we might say to him from our heart: Draw us; we will run in the fragrance of your ointments after you.
