6 And this is love: that we walk according to his commandments. For this is the commandment that you have heard in the same way from the beginning, and in which you should walk.
7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess that Jesus Christ has arrived in the flesh. Such a one as this is a deceiver and an antichrist.
8 Be cautious for yourselves, lest you lose what you have accomplished, and so that, instead, you may receive a full reward.
9 Everyone who withdraws and does not remain in the doctrine of Christ, does not have God. Whoever remains in the doctrine, such a one as this has both the Father and the Son.

℟ Omnis pulchritúdo Dómini exaltáta est super sídera:

℟ All the beauty of the Lord is exalted above the stars:

Bernardine Albizesca, born of a noble Sienese family, gave clear signs of holiness from the beginning of his youth; for, honestly educated by pious parents, neglecting childish games, amid his first studies of grammar he devoted his mind to works of piety, given especially to fasting, prayer, and the veneration of the most Blessed Virgin. Indeed, he was conspicuous for mercy toward the poor. And in order to cultivate all these things the better as time went on, he wished to be enrolled among those who serve God in Siena in the hospital of Blessed Mary of the Scala, from which many men renowned for holiness have come forth. There, by bodily mortification and the care of the sick, while a dreadful pestilence was raging, he exercised himself with incredible charity. Among his other virtues, he preserved chastity most holily, despite his distinguished appearance that resisted it, so that in his presence no one ever, not even the most shameless, dared to utter an immodest word.

Afflicted by a grave illness, which he endured with the utmost patience for four months, he recovered at length and began to deliberate about embracing the religious life. To prepare the way for himself, he rented a small dwelling at the edge of the city; withdrawing into it, he led a life of the greatest austerity in every respect, praying to God without ceasing that he might be shown what course he ought to follow. By divine providence it came about that he chose above all others the Order of Blessed Francis, in which he excelled in humility, patience, and the other virtues of a man of religion. When the superior of the monastery took note of this, and had already come to know Bernardine's learning and mastery of the sacred Scriptures, he laid upon him the burden of preaching. Having accepted this office in all humility, yet recognizing himself to be less than adequate on account of the weakness and hoarseness of his voice, he implored the help of God, and was freed from that impediment not without a miracle.

As those times were overflowing with vices and crimes, and in Italy all things divine and human were confounded by bloody factions, Bernardino, hastening through cities and towns, in the name of Jesus which he always bore on his lips and in his heart, largely restored the collapsed piety and morals by word and example. By which means it came about that distinguished cities demanded him as their bishop from the Supreme Pontiff; which office he declined with unconquerable humility most steadfastly. Finally, the man of God, exhausted by immense labors, having brought forth many great miracles, and having also written books devoutly and learnedly, after having lived sixty-six years, rested in a blessed end in the city of Aquila in the Vestini. Nicholas V, Supreme Pontiff, enrolled him, shining daily with new signs, in the number of the Saints six years after his death.

Hoc autem nobis primum quæréndum est, quidnam sit, quod, nato Dómino, apparuérunt Angeli, et tamen non legúntur in albis véstibus apparuísse: ascendénte autem Dómino, missi Angeli in albis legúntur véstibus apparuísse. Sic étenim scriptum est: Vidéntibus illis elevátus est, et nubes suscépit eum ab óculis eórum. Cumque intueréntur in cælum eúntem illum, ecce duo viri stetérunt iuxta illos in véstibus albis. In albis autem véstibus gáudium et solémnitas mentis osténditur. Quid est ergo, quod, nato Dómino, non in albis véstibus; ascendénte autem Dómino, in albis véstibus Angeli appárent: nisi quod tunc magna solémnitas Angelis facta est, cum cælum Deus homo penetrávit? Now this is what we must first inquire into: why it is that, when the Lord was born, Angels appeared, and yet they are not read to have appeared in white garments; but when the Lord ascended, the Angels who were sent are read to have appeared in white garments. For it is written thus: While they watched, he was lifted up, and a cloud received him from their sight. And as they were gazing up to heaven as he went, behold, two men stood beside them in white garments. Now white garments signify joy and festivity of soul. What then does it mean that, when the Lord was born, the Angels do not appear in white garments; but when the Lord ascends, the Angels appear in white garments — unless it be that then a great solemnity was made for the Angels, when God made man penetrated the heavens? For when the Lord was born, the divinity seemed to be humbled; but when the Lord ascended, humanity was exalted. For white garments are more fitting to exaltation than to humiliation.

At his Ascension, therefore, Angels had to be seen in white garments: for he who appeared as a humble God at his Nativity, was shown at his Ascension as exalted man. But what we must chiefly consider, dearest brethren, at this solemnity is this: that today the decree of our condemnation has been cancelled, the sentence of our corruption has been changed. For that nature to which it was said, You are dust, and to dust you shall return, has today gone up into heaven. For it was on account of this very lifting up of our flesh that blessed Job, in figure, calls the Lord a bird. For since he saw that Judea did not understand the mystery of his Ascension, blessed Job, in figure, pronounced judgment on her unbelief, saying: The path of the bird, she does not know.

The Lord was rightly called a bird, because he lifted a fleshly body to the heavens. Whoever did not believe that he ascended to heaven did not know the way of this bird. Concerning this solemnity the Psalmist says: Your magnificence is lifted up above the heavens. Concerning this again he says: God ascends with jubilation, and the Lord with the voice of a trumpet. Concerning this again he says: Ascending on high, he led captivity captive, he gave gifts to men. Ascending on high, he led captivity captive: because in the power of his incorruption he absorbed our corruption. And he gave gifts to men: because, having sent the Spirit from above, to some he granted the word of wisdom, to others the word of knowledge, to others the grace of virtues, to others the grace of healings, to others kinds of tongues, to others the interpretation of speeches.
