Hymnus
Deus tuórum mílitum
Sors, et córona, prǽmium,
Laudes canéntes Mártyris
Absólve nexu críminis.
Hic nempe mundi gáudia,
Et blanda fraudum pábula
Imbúta felle députans,
Pervénit ad cæléstia.
Pœnas cucúrrit fórtiter,
Et sústulit viríliter,
Fundénsque pro te sánguinem,
Ætérna dona póssidet.
Ob hoc precátu súpplici
Te póscimus, piíssime;
In hoc triúmpho Mártyris
Dimítte noxam sérvulis.
Laus et perénnis glória
Patri sit, atque Fílio,
Sancto simul Paráclito,
In sempitérna sǽcula.
Amen.
O God, the lot, crown, and reward
of your soldiers:
as we sing the praises of the Martyr,
free us from the bond of sin.
For he, reckoning the joys of this world
and the enticing food of deception
as bitter gall,
arrived at the things of heaven.
He ran bravely through his punishments
and bore them manfully,
and, shedding his blood for you,
now possesses eternal gifts.
For this, with suppliant prayer
we entreat you, most merciful One;
in this triumph of the Martyr
forgive your servants their offenses.
Let enduring praise and glory
be to the Father, and to the Son,
and likewise to the Holy Paraclete,
through all eternal ages.
Amen.

Nocturn 1
Ant.
Ant. In the law of the Lord * was his delight day and night.
Psalmus 1
Psalm 1
1:1 Blessed is the man who has not followed the counsel of the impious, and has not remained in the way of sinners, * and has not sat in the chair of pestilence:
1:2 But his will is with the law of the Lord, * and he will meditate on his law, day and night.
1:3a And he will be like a tree that has been planted beside running waters, * which will provide its fruit in its time:
1:3b And its leaf will not fall away: * and all things whatsoever that he does will prosper.
1:4 Not so the impious, not so: * but they are like the dust that the wind casts along the face of the earth.
1:5 Therefore, the impious will not prevail again in judgment: * nor sinners in the council of the just.
1:6 For the Lord knows the way of the just: * and the path of the impious will pass away.
℣ Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

Psalmus 2
Psalm 2
2:3 Dirumpámus víncula eórum: * et proiciámus a nobis iugum ipsórum.
2:4 Qui hábitat in cælis, irridébit eos: * et Dóminus subsannábit eos.
2:7 Dóminus dixit ad me: * Fílius meus es tu, ego hódie génui te.
2:8 Póstula a me, et dabo tibi gentes hereditátem tuam, * et possessiónem tuam términos terræ.
2:9 Reges eos in virga férrea, * et tamquam vas fíguli confrínges eos.
2:11 Servíte Dómino in timóre: * et exsultáte ei cum tremóre.
2:1 Why have the Gentiles been seething: * and why have the people been pondering nonsense?
2:2 The kings of the earth have stood up, and the leaders have joined together as one * against the Lord, and against his Christ:
2:3 Let us shatter their chains: * and cast their yoke away from us.
2:4 He who dwells in heaven will ridicule them: * and the Lord will mock them.
2:5 Then will he speak to them in his anger, * and trouble them with his fury.
2:6 Yet I have been appointed king by him over Zion, his holy mountain, * preaching his precepts.
2:7 The Lord has said to me: * You are my son, this day have I begotten you.
2:8 Ask of me, and I will give to you the Gentiles for your inheritance, * and the ends of the earth for your possession.
2:9 You will rule them with an iron rod, * and you will shatter them like a potter's vessel.
2:10 And now, O kings, understand: * be instructed, you who judge the earth.
2:11 Serve the Lord in fear: * and rejoice before him with trembling.
2:12 Embrace discipline, lest at any time the Lord be angry, * and you perish from the just way.
2:13 When his wrath shall be kindled in a short time: * blessed are all who trust in him.
℣ Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

3:2 Dómine, quid multiplicáti sunt qui tríbulant me? * multi insúrgunt advérsum me.
3:7 Non timébo míllia pópuli circumdántis me: * exsúrge, Dómine, salvum me fac, Deus meus.
3:2 Lord, why have they who trouble me been multiplied? * Many rise up against me.
3:3 Many say of my soul: * There is no salvation for him in his God.
3:4 But you, O Lord, are my sustainer, * my glory, and the one who lifts up my head.
3:5 With my voice I cried out to the Lord: * and he heard me from his holy mountain.
3:6 I slept, and took my rest: * and I arose, for the Lord sustained me.
3:7 I will not fear thousands of people surrounding me: * arise, O Lord, save me, O my God.
3:8 For you have struck all who oppose me without cause: * you have broken the teeth of sinners.
3:9 Salvation belongs to the Lord: * and your blessing is upon your people.

℣ My tongue shall meditate on your justice.

℟ All the day long, your praise, O Lord.
Pater noster, qui es in cælis, sanctificétur nomen tuum: advéniat regnum tuum: fiat volúntas tua, sicut in cælo et in terra. Panem nostrum cotidiánum da nobis hódie: et dimítte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name: thy kingdom come: thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses, as we also forgive those who trespass against us:
℣ Et ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem:

De Epístola beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Romános
From the Epistle of the blessed Apostle Paul to the Romans
Rom 8:12-19
Rom 8:12-19
12 Brethren: we are not debtors to the flesh, so as to live according to the flesh.
13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die. But if, by the Spirit, you mortify the deeds of the flesh, you shall live.
14 For all those who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God.
15 And you have not received, again, a spirit of servitude in fear, but you have received the Spirit of the adoption of sons, in whom we cry out: 'Abba, Father!'
16 For the Spirit himself renders testimony to our spirit that we are the sons of God.
17 But if we are sons, then we are also heirs: certainly heirs of God, but also co-heirs with Christ, yet in such a way that, if we suffer with him, we shall also be glorified with him.
18 For I consider that the sufferings of this time are not worthy to be compared with that future glory which shall be revealed in us.
19 For the anticipation of the creature anticipates the revelation of the sons of God.
℟ Ego sum vitis vera, et vos pálmites:
℟ I am the true vine, and you are the branches:
Qui manet in me, et ego in eo, hic fert fructum multum, allelúia, allelúia.
He who abides in me, and I in him, bears much fruit, alleluia, alleluia.
℣ Sicut diléxit me Pater, et ego diléxi vos.
℣ As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you.
℟ Qui manet in me, et ego in eo, hic fert fructum multum, allelúia, allelúia.
℟ He who abides in me, and I in him, bears much fruit, alleluia, alleluia.
℣ Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
℟ Qui manet in me, et ego in eo, hic fert fructum multum, allelúia, allelúia.
℟ He who abides in me, and I in him, bears much fruit, alleluia, alleluia.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benedictio. Unigénitus Dei Fílius nos benedícere et adiuváre dignétur.
Benedictio. May the Only Begotten Son of God be pleased to bless and assist us.

Rom 8:28-34
Rom 8:28-34
28 And we know that, for those who love God, all things work together unto good, for those who, in accordance with his purpose, are called to be saints.
29 For those whom he foreknew, he also predestinated, in conformity with the image of his Son, so that he might be the Firstborn among many brothers.
30 And those whom he predestinated, he also called. And those whom he called, he also justified. And those whom he justified, he also glorified.
31 So, what should we say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us?
32 He who did not spare even his own Son, but handed him over for the sake of us all, how could he not also, with him, have given us all things?
33 Who will make an accusation against the elect of God? God is the One who justifies;
34 who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus who has died, and who has indeed also risen again, is at the right hand of God, and even now he intercedes for us.
℟ Surgens Iesus Dóminus noster, stans in médio discipulórum suórum, dixit:
℟ Rising, our Lord Jesus, standing in the midst of his disciples, said:
Pax vobis, allelúia: gavísi sunt discípuli viso Dómino, allelúia.
Peace be with you, alleluia: the disciples rejoiced at the sight of the Lord, alleluia.
℣ Una ergo sabbatórum, cum fores essent clausæ, ubi erant discípuli congregáti, venit Iesus, et stetit in medio eórum, et dixit eis.
℣ On the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were gathered, Jesus came and stood in their midst, and said to them.
℟ Pax vobis, allelúia: gavísi sunt discípuli viso Dómino, allelúia.
℟ Peace be with you, alleluia: the disciples rejoiced at the sight of the Lord, alleluia.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benedictio. Ad gáudia paradísi perdúcat nos misericórdia Christi.
Benedictio. May the mercy of Christ lead us to the joys of paradise.

Rom 8:35-39
Rom 8:35-39
35 Quis ergo nos separábit a caritáte Christi? tribulátio? an angústia? an fames? an núditas? an perículum? an persecútio? an gládius?
35 Then who will separate us from the love of Christ? Tribulation? Or anguish? Or famine? Or nakedness? Or peril? Or persecution? Or the sword?
36 For it is as it has been written: For your sake, we are being put to death all day long. We are being treated like sheep for the slaughter.
37 But in all these things we overcome, because of him who has loved us.
38 For I am certain that neither death, nor life, nor Angels, nor Principalities, nor Powers, nor the present things, nor the future things, nor strength,
39 nor the heights, nor the depths, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
℟ Purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump; for Christ our Pasch has been sacrificed:
Itaque epulémur in Dómino, allelúia.
And so let us feast in the Lord, alleluia.
℣ He died for our sins, and rose again for our justification.
℟ Itaque epulémur in Dómino, allelúia.
℟ And so let us feast in the Lord, alleluia.
℣ Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

5:6 Neither will the wicked dwell beside you: * nor will the unjust endure before your eyes.
5:7a You have hated all who work iniquity: * you will destroy all who speak falsehood.
5:7b The Lord will abhor the man of blood and deceit: * (8a) but I, through the abundance of your mercy.

Justin, son of Priscus, born of Greek stock at Flavia Neapolis in Syrian Palestine, spent his youth in the study of every branch of learning. When he became a man, he was so seized by love of philosophy that, in order to attain truth, he enrolled himself in all the philosophical schools that were available and scrutinized their precepts. Finding in them nothing but a deceptive wisdom and error, he was taught by heavenly illumination through a certain unknown old man of venerable appearance, and embraced the philosophy of the true Christian faith. Thenceforth, keeping the books of sacred Scripture constantly at hand, the divine fire was so kindled in his soul by their meditation that, having attained, through the force of his erudition, an eminent knowledge of Jesus Christ, he composed very many volumes for expounding and propagating the Christian faith.
℟ Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came at dawn to the tomb:
Jesus whom you seek is not here; he has risen as he said; he will go before you into Galilee, there you will see him, alleluia, alleluia.
℣ And very early on the first day of the week they come to the tomb, the sun having already risen: and entering, they saw a young man sitting on the right, who said to them.
℟ Jesus whom you seek is not here; he has risen as he said; he will go before you into Galilee, there you will see him, alleluia, alleluia.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Let the Savior therefore enter the house, and visit it often — that house which the penitent Lazarus purifies, which Martha adorns, and which Mary fills, given to interior contemplation. But perhaps some inquisitive person will ask why in the present Gospel reading there is no mention at all of Lazarus. I judge indeed that this too does not depart from the intended comparison. For the Spirit, wishing to signify a virginal house, fittingly kept silence about penance, which after all accompanies evil. Far be it from us to say that this house ever harbored any stain of its own, such that the broom of Lazarus would be sought in it.

Cum invictus fídei vindex assereret se in votis semper habuísse cruciátus pérpeti propter Dóminum Iesum Christum, a quo magnam in cælis mercédem cónsequi expectabat, præses in eum capitálem senténtiam pronuntiávit. Itaque mirábilis philósophus Deum collaudans, post vérbera, fuso pro Christo sánguine, glorióso martyrio coronátus est. Quidam vero fidéles clam illíus sustulérunt corpus, et in loco idoneo condidérunt. Leo décimus tertius Póntifex maximus eiúsdem Offícium et Missam ab univérsa Ecclésia celebrári præcepit.
Since Justin had explained in his first Apology how Christians assembled to celebrate the Sacred Mysteries, and what were the mysteries of this sacred assembly, in order to refute the calumnies of the pagans; the governor examined him as to the place where he and the other Christians of this City assembled. Justin, however, keeping silent about the places of assembly so as not to betray the holy things and the brethren to dogs, indicated only his own dwelling, where he was accustomed to stay and to instruct his disciples, near the celebrated station of the Pastor in the house of Pudes. Finally, the governor gave him the option either to sacrifice to the gods or to endure being flogged throughout his whole body. When the unconquered defender of the faith declared that he had always had it in his desires to suffer torments for the Lord Jesus Christ, from whom he expected a great reward in heaven, the governor pronounced capital sentence against him. And so the admirable philosopher, praising God, after stripes, was crowned with glorious martyrdom by the shedding of his blood for Christ. Certain faithful secretly removed his body and buried it in a suitable place. Pope Leo the Thirteenth commanded that his Office and Mass be celebrated by the whole Church.

Léctio sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam.
A Reading of the holy Gospel according to Luke.
Luc 12:2-8
Luc 12:2-8
In that time: Jesus said to his disciples: Nothing is covered that will not be revealed; nor hidden that will not be known. Et cetera.
A Homily of Saint John Chrysostom.
At paululum exspectáte, et servatores benefactoresque orbis vos prædicábunt omnes.
Nothing is covered that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known. What he says amounts to this: It is sufficient consolation for you, if I, your Master and Lord, am a sharer in reproaches. But if you still grieve upon hearing this, consider also that you will not long afterward be freed from this suspicion. For why do you take it so hard? Because they call you impostors and deceivers? Wait but a little, and all men will proclaim you saviors and benefactors of the world. Time will indeed bring all obscure things to light, will expose their slanders, and will make your virtue conspicuous. For when by the very facts you are proved to be saviors and benefactors, conspicuous in every virtue, men will give no heed to their words but to the truth of the matter; and those accusers will be found to be sycophants, liars, and slanderers, while you will be found more radiant than the very sun. For a long stretch of time will make you known, will proclaim you, and will send forth a voice clearer than a trumpet, and will present all men as witnesses of your virtue. Let not, therefore, the things now spoken cast you down, but let the hope of future blessings lift you up. For the things that concern you cannot be hidden.

Then, after he had freed them from all anguish, fear, and anxiety, and made them superior to all reproaches, he finally addressed them opportunely concerning the freedom of preaching; for he says: "What I say to you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, proclaim upon the housetops." Although there was no darkness when he said these things, nor was he speaking into the ear: yet these things are said hyperbolically. For since he was addressing them alone, in the small corner of Palestine, he therefore says, "In the dark" and "In the ear," comparing this manner of speaking with the confidence of speaking with which he was to instruct them afterward. Not in one, two, or three cities, but throughout the whole world, traveling over land and sea, the inhabited and the uninhabited — speak all things with great confidence to tyrants, peoples, philosophers, and rhetoricians. This is why he said "upon the housetops" and "in the light" — without any evasion and with all liberty.
Benedictio. Ad societátem cívium supernórum perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum.
Benedictio. May the King of Angels lead us to the company of the citizens on high.

Dixit eis: Pax vobis.
He said to them: "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you" — that is, as God the Father sent me who am God, so I who am man send you who are men. The Father sent the Son, who ordained that he should be incarnate for the redemption of the human race. He willed him indeed to come into the world to suffer Passion; yet he loved the Son whom he sent to Passion. The Lord, however, sends the chosen Apostles into the world not for the joys of the world, but, just as he himself was sent, to sufferings. Therefore, since the Son is both loved by the Father and yet sent to Passion, so the disciples are loved by the Lord and yet sent into the world for Passion. Therefore it is rightly said: "As the Father has sent me, so I send you" — that is, I love you with the same charity with which I send you amid the scandals of persecutors, as the Father loves me with that charity by which he made me come to endure sufferings.
