The fast, as taught by holy lore,
We keep in solemn course once more:
The fast to all men known, and bound
In forty days of yearly round.

The law and seers that were of old
In diverse ways this Lent foretold,
Which Christ, all seasons’ King and Guide,
In after ages sanctified.

More sparing therefore let us make
The words we speak, the food we take,
Our sleep and mirth, —and closer barred
Be every sense in holy guard.

Avoid the evil thoughts that roll
Like waters o’er the heedless soul;
Nor let the foe occasion find
Our souls in slavery to bind.

In prayer together let us fall,
And cry for mercy, one and all,
And weep before the Judge’s feet,
And his avenging wrath entreat.

Thy grace have we offended sore,
By sins, O God, which we deplore;

15 Quid est quod diléctus meus in domo mea fecit scélera multa? Numquid carnes sanctæ áuferent a te malítias tuas, in quibus gloriáta es?
16 Olívam úberem, pulchram, fructíferam, speciósam vocávit Dóminus nomen tuum: ad vocem loquélæ, grandis exársit ignis in ea, et combústa sunt frutéta eius.
17 Et Dóminus exercítuum, qui plantávit te, locútus est super te malum: pro malis domus Israël et domus Iuda, quæ fecérunt sibi ad irritándum me, libántes Báalim.
18 Tu autem, Dómine, demonstrásti mihi, et cognóvi: tunc ostendísti mihi stúdia eórum.

15 Why has my beloved wrought great wickedness in my house? How can the holy flesh take away from you your wickedness, in which you have gloried?
16 The Lord has called your name: a beautiful, fruitful, splendid, and productive olive tree. At the voice of a word, a great fire was kindled in it, and its greenery was burned up.
17 And the Lord of hosts, who planted you, has pronounced an evil against you, concerning the evils of the house of Israel and the house of Judah, which they have done to themselves so as to provoke me, by offering libations to Baal.
18 But you, O Lord, have revealed this to me, and I have understood. Then you displayed their efforts to me.
19 And I was like a meek lamb, who is being carried to be a victim. And I did not realize that they had devised plans against me, saying: 'Let us place wood upon his bread, and let us eradicate him from the land of the living, and let his name no longer be remembered.'
20 But you, O Lord of hosts, who judges justly, and who tests the temperament and the heart, let me see your vengeance against them. For I have revealed my case to you.

2 Plantásti eos, et radícem misérunt: profíciunt et fáciunt fructum: prope es tu ori eórum, et longe a rénibus eórum.
3 Et tu, Dómine, nosti me, vidísti me, et probásti cor meum tecum: cóngrega eos quasi gregem ad víctimam, et sanctífica eos in die occisiónis.

1 "Certainly, O Lord, you are just. But if I may contend with you, while still speaking what is just to you: Why does the way of the impious prosper? Why is it well with all those who act treacherously and deal wickedly?
2 You planted them, and they took root. They are prospering and bearing fruit. You are near to their mouths, but far from their hearts.
3 And you, O Lord, have known me well. You have seen me, and you have tested my heart with you. Gather them together like a flock for the sacrifice, and sanctify them for the day of slaughter.
4 How long shall the earth mourn? And how long shall the plants of every field wither because of the wickedness of its inhabitants? The beasts and birds have been destroyed, because they said: He will not see our last end."

10 Many pastors have demolished my vineyard. They have trampled my portion. They have turned my desirable portion into a desert of solitude.
11 They have squandered it, and it has grieved concerning me. The entire earth has become utterly desolate, because there is no one who takes it to heart."
