The fast, as taught by holy lore,
We keep in solemn course once more:
The fast to all men known, and bound
In forty days of yearly round.

The law and seers that were of old
In diverse ways this Lent foretold,
Which Christ, all seasons’ King and Guide,
In after ages sanctified.

More sparing therefore let us make
The words we speak, the food we take,
Our sleep and mirth, —and closer barred
Be every sense in holy guard.

Avoid the evil thoughts that roll
Like waters o’er the heedless soul;
Nor let the foe occasion find
Our souls in slavery to bind.

In prayer together let us fall,
And cry for mercy, one and all,
And weep before the Judge’s feet,
And his avenging wrath entreat.

Thy grace have we offended sore,

Ne putárent hómines phantásma esse factum, quia mórtuus resurréxit, Lázarus unus erat ex recumbéntibus: vivébat, loquebátur, epulabátur, véritas ostendebátur, infidélitas Iudæórum confundebátur. Discumbébat ergo Iesus cum Lázaro, et céteris: ministrábat Martha, una ex soróribus Lázari. María vero, áltera soror Lázari, accépit libram unguénti nardi pístici pretiósi, et unxit pedes Iesu, et extérsit capíllis suis pedes eius, et domus impléta est ex odóre unguénti. Factum audívimus: mystérium requirámus.

Lest men should think that what had occurred was a phantom, because a dead man had risen, Lazarus was one of those reclining at table: he was living, he was speaking, he was feasting, the truth was being shown forth, the unbelief of the Jews was being confounded. Jesus reclined therefore with Lazarus and the others; Martha, one of the sisters of Lazarus, served. Mary, the other sister of Lazarus, took a pound of costly ointment of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair, and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. We have heard what was done: let us seek the mystery.

℟ Viri ímpii dixérunt: Opprimámus virum iustum iniúste, et deglutiámus eum tamquam inférnus vivum: auferámus memóriam illíus de terra: et de spóliis eius sortem mittámus inter nos: ipsi enim homicídæ thesaurizavérunt sibi mala.

Quærébas operári iustítiam. Iustus ex fide vivit. Unge pedes Iesu bene vivéndo: Domínica sectáre vestígia. Capíllis terge: si habes supérflua, da paupéribus, et Dómini pedes tersísti: capílli enim supérflua córporis vidéntur. Habes quod agas de supérfluis tuis: tibi supérflua sunt, sed Dómini pédibus necessária sunt. Forte in terra Dómini pedes índigent.

Therefore, whatever faithful soul you are, anoint the feet of the Lord with precious ointment, as Mary did. That ointment was justice, and for that reason it was a pound; but it was ointment of pure nard of great price. As for the word pure nard, we should believe that this was a place from which this precious ointment came; yet this too is not without meaning and accords most fittingly with the sacrament. In Greek pistis means faith in Latin. You were seeking to perform justice. The just man lives by faith. Anoint the feet of Jesus by living well: follow in the footsteps of the Lord. Wipe them with your hair: if you have more than you need, give to the poor, and you will have wiped the feet of the Lord — for hair seems to be what is superfluous on the body. You have something to do with your superfluities: they are superfluous to you, but to the feet of the Lord they are necessary. Perhaps the feet of the Lord on earth stand in need.

℟ Oppróbrium factus sum nimis inimícis meis: vidérunt me, et movérunt cápita sua:

℟ I have become a great reproach to my enemies: they saw me, and they shook their heads:

Adiuva me, Dómine, Deus meus.

Help me, O Lord my God.

℣ They have spoken against me with a deceitful tongue, and with words of hatred they have surrounded me.

For of whom else will he speak at the end, if not of his own members, when he says: "As long as you did it to one of the least of mine, you did it to me"? You have spent your surplus goods, but you followed my feet. The house was filled with fragrance; the world was filled with good renown — for a good fragrance is a good reputation. Those who live wickedly and are called Christians do injury to Christ; concerning such it is said that through them the name of the Lord is blasphemed. If through such persons the name of God is blasphemed, through the good the name of the Lord is praised. Hear the Apostle: "We are the good fragrance of Christ," he says, "in every place."
