Cogitavérunt autem príncipes sacerdótum ut et Lázarum interfícerent. O stulta cogitátio, et cæca sævítia! Dóminus Christus, qui suscitáre pótuit mórtuum, non posset occísum! Quando Lázaro inferebátis necem, numquid auferebátis Dómino potestátem? Si áliud vobis vidétur mórtuus, áliud occísus: ecce Dóminus utrúmque fecit, et Lázarum mórtuum, et seípsum suscitávit occísum.
When Lazarus had been raised, the miracle of the Lord was so widely spread by reason of its great evidence and so publicly declared that they were able neither to conceal what had been done nor to deny it. Consider what they devised. The leaders of the priests planned to put Lazarus to death also. O foolish counsel, and blind savagery! The Lord Christ, who was able to raise the dead, would he not be able to raise one slain? When you were plotting the death of Lazarus, were you taking away the power of the Lord? If you think a dead man is one thing, and one slain is another: behold, the Lord did both — both raised Lazarus from the dead, and raised himself from being slain.

On the next day, the great crowd that had come for the feast day, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, and cried out: Hosanna, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel. Branches of palm trees signify praises, betokening victory: because the Lord was about to conquer death by dying, and to triumph over the devil, the prince of death, by the trophy of the Cross. But Hosanna is a word of supplication, as some who know the Hebrew language say, expressing an emotion rather than signifying any particular thing, like what in the Latin language are called interjections: as when in grief we say alas, or when we are delighted we say ah.

℟ Do not turn away your face from your servant, O Lord:

For I am in tribulation, hear me quickly.

The crowd was saying these praises to him: Hosanna, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel. What a cross of the mind could the envy of the Jewish leaders endure, when so great a multitude was proclaiming their King Christ? But what was it to the Lord to be King of Israel? What great thing was it for the King of the ages to become King of men? For Christ is King of Israel not to levy tribute, nor to arm an army with the sword, nor to vanquish visible enemies: but King of Israel in that he rules minds, in that he counsels for eternity, in that he leads believers, those who hope and love, into the Kingdom of Heaven.

John, born at Capistrano in the Peligni country, was sent to Perugia for his studies, and made such progress in Christian and liberal disciplines that, on account of his outstanding knowledge of law, he was appointed by Ladislaus, king of Naples, as governor of several cities. But while he was most rightly administering the affairs of these cities and striving to restore tranquility to their troubled affairs, he was himself seized and thrown into prison; from which being miraculously freed, he professed the rule of Francis of Assisi among the Friars Minor. Advancing in the study of divine letters, he found in Saint Bernardine of Siena his teacher, whose examples of virtue also he eminently imitated, especially in promoting devotion to the most holy name of Jesus and to the Mother of God. He refused the bishopric of Aquila, and distinguished himself above all by stricter discipline and by the many writings he published for the reform of morals.

Diligently devoting himself to the preaching of the word of God, he traversed almost all of Italy; in which ministry he led back to the path of salvation by the power of his words and the frequency of miracles almost countless souls. Martin the Fifth appointed him inquisitor to suppress the sect of the Fraticelli. Appointed by Nicholas the Fifth as general inquisitor against Jews and Saracens in Italy, he converted very many to the faith of Christ. In the East he ordered many things excellently, and at the Council of Florence, where he shone as a kind of sun, he restored the Armenians to the Catholic Church. The same Pontiff, at the request of the Emperor Frederick the Third, sent him as legate of the Apostolic See to Germany, to call heretics back to the Catholic faith and the minds of princes to concord. In Germany and other provinces he wondrously increased the glory of God through six years of ministry, bringing innumerable Hussites, Adamites, Taborites, and Hebrews to the bosom of the Church by the truth of doctrine and the light of miracles.

When Callistus III, chiefly at his pleading, had decided to send crusaders, John hastened through Pannonia and other provinces, and by word and by letters so inflamed the spirits of princes for the war that seventy thousand Christian soldiers were soon enlisted. By his counsel and valor, the victory of Belgrade was chiefly won, with a hundred and twenty thousand Turks partly slain and partly put to flight. When news of this victory reached Rome on the eighth day before the Ides of August, the same Callistus consecrated in perpetual solemnity the feast of the Transfiguration of Christ the Lord as a memorial of that day. Sick with a fatal illness and brought to Villach, he was visited by several princes; exhorting them to defend the faith, he gave back his soul to God holily, in the year of salvation fourteen hundred and fifty-six. God confirmed his glory after death by many miracles: these having been duly examined, Alexander VIII in the year sixteen hundred and ninety enrolled John in the number of the Saints; and Leo XIII, a century after his canonization, extended his Office and Mass to the universal Church.

The Apostles were so named that their authority might be commended. For Apostle is interpreted as one sent: and they were sent to preach, according to that saying: Christ did not send me to baptize, but to evangelize. They were sent to preach, not a small thing, but a great one — namely, the Kingdom of God — by which may be understood the teaching of truth, according to that saying: The Kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation that yields its fruits. It may also be said to be the grace of the Holy Spirit, according to that saying: The Kingdom of God is not food and drink, but justice and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit; and below: Behold, the Kingdom of God is within you. It may also be said to be eternal glory, according to that saying: Amen I say to you, unless one is reborn of water and the Holy Spirit, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God.

Per primum sunt nuntii Patris, per secundum Filii, per tertium Spiritus Sancti. De primo: pro patribus tuis nati sunt tibi filii. De secundo: Non enim nosmetipsos prædicamus, sed Iesus Christum Dominum nostrum. De tertio: Posui vos ut eatis, et fructum afferatis, et fructus vester maneat. There are, however, three evident signs by which it is proved whether a preacher has been sent by the Lord to preach the Gospel. The first is the authority of the one who sends, such as that of a bishop, and above all of the Supreme Pontiff, who stands in the place of Peter, indeed of Jesus Christ; and therefore whoever is sent by him is sent by Christ. The second is zeal for souls in the person who is sent, namely when that person has sought principally the honor of God and the salvation of souls. The third is the bearing of fruit and the conversion of those who hear. Through the first they are messengers of the Father, through the second of the Son, through the third of the Holy Spirit. Of the first: in place of your fathers, sons have been born to you. Of the second: For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ our Lord. Of the third: I have appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain. And whoever is sent in this way can say that word: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me.
