The fast, as taught by holy lore,
We keep in solemn course once more:
The fast to all men known, and bound
In forty days of yearly round.

The law and seers that were of old
In diverse ways this Lent foretold,
Which Christ, all seasons’ King and Guide,
In after ages sanctified.

More sparing therefore let us make
The words we speak, the food we take,
Our sleep and mirth, —and closer barred
Be every sense in holy guard.

Avoid the evil thoughts that roll
Like waters o’er the heedless soul;
Nor let the foe occasion find
Our souls in slavery to bind.

In prayer together let us fall,
And cry for mercy, one and all,
And weep before the Judge’s feet,
And his avenging wrath entreat.

Thy grace have we offended sore,
By sins, O God, which we deplore;
But pour upon us from on high,
O pardoning One, thy clemency.

2:5 Then will he speak to them in his anger, * and trouble them with his fury.

3 and which came to him in the days of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, king of Judah, even until the completion of the eleventh year of Zedekiah, the son of Josiah, king of Judah, even until the transmigration of Jerusalem in the fifth month.
4 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying:
5 Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. And before you went forth from the womb, I sanctified you. And I made you a prophet to the nations.

7 And the Lord said to me: "Do not choose to say, 'I am a boy.' For you shall go forth to everyone to whom I will send you. And you shall speak all that I will command you.
8 You should not be afraid before their face. For I am with you, so that I may deliver you," says the Lord.
9 And the Lord put forth his hand, and he touched my mouth. And the Lord said to me: "Behold, I have placed my words in your mouth.
10 Behold, today I have appointed you over nations and over kingdoms, so that you may root up, and pull down, and destroy, and scatter, and so that you may build and plant."
11 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, "What do you see, Jeremiah?" And I said, "I see a staff, keeping watch."
12 And the Lord said to me: "You have seen well. For I will keep watch over my word, so that I may accomplish it."
13 And the word of the Lord came to me a second time, saying, "What do you see?" And I said, "I see a cooking pot upon a fire, and its face is before the face of the north."

℟ Many are those who trouble me, and they say: There is no salvation for him in his God:

16 Et loquar iudícia mea cum eis super omnem malítiam eórum, qui dereliquérunt me, et libavérunt diis aliénis, et adoravérunt opus mánuum suárum.
17 Tu ergo, accínge lumbos tuos, et surge, et lóquere ad eos ómnia quæ ego præcípio tibi. Ne formídes a fácie eórum: nec enim timére te fáciam vultum eórum.

14 And the Lord said to me: "From the north, an evil will spread over all the inhabitants of the earth.
15 For behold, I will call together all the close associates of the kingdoms of the north, says the Lord. And they will arrive, and each one of them will place his throne at the entrance to the gates of Jerusalem, and over all its surrounding walls, and over all the cities of Judah.
16 And I will speak my judgments with them, concerning all the wickedness of those who have forsaken me, and who have offered libations to strange gods, and who have adored the work of their own hands.
17 Therefore, you should gird your waist, and rise up, and speak to them everything that I instruct you. You should not have dread before their face. For I will cause you to be unafraid of their countenance.
18 For certainly, this day, I have made you like a fortified city, and an iron pillar, and a brass wall, over all the land, to the kings of Judah, to its leaders, and to the priests, and to the people of the land.
19 And they will make war against you, but they will not prevail. For I am with you, says the Lord, so that I may free you."

℟ How long will my enemy be exalted over me?

In ómnibus, dilectíssimi, solemnitátibus christiánis non ignorámus paschále sacraméntum esse præcípuum: cui condígne et cóngrue suscipiéndo, totíus quidem nos témporis institúta refórmant: sed devotiónem nostram præséntes vel máxime dies éxigunt, quos illi sublimíssimo divínæ misericórdiæ sacraménto scimus esse contíguos. In quibus mérito a sanctis Apóstolis per doctrínam Spíritus Sancti maióra sunt ordináta ieiúnia: ut per commúne consórtium crucis Christi, étiam nos áliquid in eo quod propter nos gessit, agerémus, sicut Apóstolus ait: Si compátimur, et conglorificábimur. Certa atque secúra est exspectátio promíssæ beatitúdinis, ubi est participátio Domínicæ passiónis.

In all Christian solemnities, dearest ones, we know that the Paschal sacrament is the chief; and indeed the ordinances of the whole season reform us to receive it worthily and fittingly. But the present days especially demand our devotion, since we know them to be immediately adjacent to that most sublime sacrament of divine mercy. In these days, the greater fasts were rightly ordained by the holy Apostles through the teaching of the Holy Spirit: so that through our common sharing in the Cross of Christ, we too might do something in what he did for our sake, as the Apostle says: If we suffer together, we shall also be glorified together. The expectation of the promised blessedness is certain and sure, where there is participation in the Lord's Passion.

For the Apostle proclaims, saying: All who wish to live godly in Christ will suffer persecution: and therefore the tribulation of persecution is never absent, if the observance of godliness is never absent. For the Lord says in his exhortations: Whoever does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. And we ought not doubt that this word pertains not only to the disciples of Christ, but to all the faithful and to the whole Church, which in those who were present was hearing its saving word universally.

Just as it is the duty of the whole body to live devoutly, so it is the duty of the whole of life to bear the Cross: which each one is rightly urged to carry, because it is borne by each according to his own manner and measure. The name of persecution is one, but the cause of the struggle is not one: and often there is more danger in a hidden foe than in an open enemy. Blessed Job, schooled by the alternation of good and evil in this world, spoke with piety and truth: Is not the life of man upon earth a trial? For the faithful soul is assailed not only by bodily pains and torments, but also, while its members remain unharmed, is oppressed by a grievous sickness if it is softened by carnal pleasure. But when the flesh lusts against the spirit, and the spirit against the flesh, the rational mind is armed by the protection of the Cross of Christ, and does not consent to the enticement of harmful desires, since it is transfixed with the key of continence and the fear of God.

He does not disdain to show by reason that he is not a sinner — he who by the power of his divinity could justify sinners. But what follows is most terrible: He who is of God hears the words of God; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God. For if he who is of God hears the words of God, and whoever is not of him cannot hear his words — let each one ask himself whether he perceives the words of God in the ear of his heart; and he will understand from whence he is. Truth commands that the heavenly homeland be desired, that the desires of the flesh be crushed, that the glory of the world be shunned, that what belongs to others not be sought, that what is one's own be given away.

Long ago, when disputing with the Jews, Christ said: Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you will not have life in you. But when they, not having received these words spiritually, went away offended — for they thought he was urging them to eat flesh — there were also in the old testament the loaves of proposition; yet since those belonged to the old testament, they have already come to an end. In the new testament, however, there is the heavenly bread and the chalice of salvation, which sanctify both soul and body. I would not have you regard these things, therefore, as though they were bare and simple bread, bare and simple wine; for they are the Body and Blood of Christ. For even if the senses report that to you, yet let faith confirm you. Do not judge the matter by taste: but let faith render you certain beyond all doubt that you have been made worthy to be a partaker of the Body and Blood of Christ.

But as for what the Truth says about the reprobate, the reprobate themselves demonstrate this about themselves by their wicked deeds: for it follows: The Jews therefore answered and said to him: Do we not say well that you are a Samaritan and have a demon? Yet hearing so great a reproach, let us hear what the Lord answers: I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. Now because Samaritan is interpreted as guardian: and he himself is truly the guardian, of whom the Psalmist says: Unless the Lord guards the city, they watch in vain who guard it: and to whom it is said through Isaiah: Watchman, what of the night? watchman, what of the night? the Lord was not willing to answer, I am not a Samaritan; but, I do not have a demon. For two things had been brought against him: one he denied, the other he consented to by silence.
